Hi,
I just had a situation where my country was in great distress, being occupied and such. I had previously taken some cores from a neighbour who now saw his chance to take them back. He declared a reconquest war. I was immediatly willing to give in to his demands plus some more (which - of course - thanks to that awful length of war modifier did not even work. I won't start to rant about this bull*rap, though).

So I thought: there should be a diplomatic action to threaten war. So, you could try to enforce whatever demands in exchange for NOT declaring war (something like the crisis mechanic in Vicky II).

That would be an interesting idea for players though for the AI I feel there isn't much between broken and useless.
What do you see is wrong with "Send warning"?
No offence but you really should actually read before posting. What he wants is basically the compete opposite of send warning.

My apologies, I just didnt quite understand what he meant properly. My reply doesn't really ask what I meant either, sorry.

Anyway, could OP please outline more of how they see it working, would it be almost identical to the peace out menu just in peace time as a diplomatic option? I would really worry that it would be far to open for exploits from powerful nations.

Essentially like an Ultimatum which were often issued in the sabre rattling days of diplomacy.

Threatening a War could be like negotiating a peace when you're not at war, you select what you want and issue your demands. If the threatened player refuses to accept your demands you should get a "Call to Arms" type popup where if you decline to follow through on your threat then you lose prestige, power projection and legitimacy.

Threatening war as a republic could lower your republican tradition slightly. Religious states could perhaps have reduced parameters for threatening wars etc.

Should also raise your opinion with the threatened players Rivals if you succeed.

However I think there should be a couple downsides to threatening war, it should perhaps make enforcing your orginal demands rather easy, but adding war goals outside the original purpose should be slightly more costly than traditional war - otherwise threatening war will just be the de facto choice.

Great idea by the way! :) I think there is a lot that could be done to make this feature a really cool addition to the game.

It could be cool in theory, but it would probably extremely abused by the player to force a dumb AI to give free stuff and blob even harder. If they prevented the AI from ever accepting loans, i dont imagine they would implement something as complex as this.

A good idea, but I've a couple suggestions:
  • The threat should increase your prestige if you they concede to your demands, but decrease it greatly if they refuse and you don't go to war.
  • The threat should give aggressive expansion if you don't have a casus belli.

To prevent this from being abusable, it could come with a longer truce time, and a maximum about how much can be demanded.

Would have to be limited to things like return cores and revoke embargo. But you shouldn't be allowed to threaten war over a claim.

I agree with this. Only for cores and embargoes, this would probably be doable. Or for a tribute, like some hordes used to do : when you paid them, they didn't burn everything.
