Abbey of Morimond

Abbey of Morimond
Morimondus. Mori Mundo or die to the world

The entrance to the abbey

Fourth daughter of Cîteaux situated in Champagne, Diocese of Langres, France; was founded in 1115 by Odelric d' Aigremont and his wife, Adeline de Choiseul. Arnold, its first abbot, a member of one of the noblest families of Germany was for many years considered as one of the columns of the Cistercian Order. Thanks to his zeal and influence, Morimond took on a rapid growth; numerous colonies therefrom established themselves in France, Germany, Poland, Bohemia, Spain, and the Island of Cyprus. Amongst the most celebrated foundations were Ebrach (1126) the most flourishing in Germany; Holy Cross (1134), the glory of the Order in Austria; Aiguebelle (1137), in France which the Reformed Cistercians have now resuscitated from its ruins. This extension was so prodigious that toward the end of the eighteenth century Morimond counted amongst its filiations nearly seven hundred monasteries for both sexes. Briefs from various popes placed the principal Military Orders of Spain under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Abbot of Morimond: the Order of Calatrava (1187); of Alcantara (1214); the Militia of Christ, in Portugal (1319), and later on those of St. Maurice and St.Lazarus in Savoy.

Citeaux and her daughters

Morimond had sheltered a great number of religious, renowned both for sanctity and science. The abbatial chair was often filled by abbots whose names are yet celebrated, to whom kings and emperors had confided tasks of the most delicate importance, and whom the popes had honoured with their confidence. A large number of bishops and several cardinals were given to the Church by Morimond, and Benedict XII, before his election, was a monk of affiliation of this abbey. Of the magnificent buildings that formed the abbey and its church, so remarkable for architectural beauty and the richness of ornamentation.

From the Catholic Encyclopedia

Charles, Abbot of Morimond

Here, in Morimond, live couple dozens of Cistercian monks who, among many other deeds, are restlessly working hard to preserve in memory the happenings around them. Upon the request coming from the Landlords all over Europe, they are to preserve written proofs of treaties, agreements and contracts. Their abbot, Charles de Morimond, is an old, stiff man who hates all irregularities and rule-breakers to the bone. Nobody, from simple clerk to Royal Chancellor, can expect mercy from him if it comes to recording the past events.

One of the monks explains briefly. “The treaties of the Blessed Christian Kings of Europe, and beyond the schismatic and heathen lands are all directed here, where the monks of Morimond preserve them. As you can see, they are busy, and you better not disturb them for too long.

The different treaties are listed by dates from this side of the library to that other side. But the monks also keep a registry of each realms, even dead ones, in these books at the front. So you can look for them by date, or by lands.

The rules are simple, please follow them for your own and our leisure."

Rules of the Monks of Morimond

Sending a treaty to be archived and remembered for years to come is remarkably easy. First, few words about writing a perfectly prepared treaty.

Primo - Indicate the year of the treaty, and also the time of the year. This allows for the Monks to manage the treaties in order of dates.

Secundo - Clearly state the title of the treaty.

Tertio - Identify the realms involved. The Monks are not-quite-in-touch with the outside influences, so they won't know who the "Holy Alliance of Pious Countries who Fight for Good and Justice" is if you don't tell them who it is specifically.

Quarto – Identify the signatories of the treaty (and/or in whose name are they signing the treaty).

Quinto – List the mechanical and non-mechanical effects of the treaty.

Sexto – Naturally, not all treaties are to long for eternity. Please mark for how long the agreement is going to last, write when (date and season/month) the said treaty is going to expire!

As a perfect example we shall use Blade!’s, some great work here. However, please DO not use quote tag in the fist post because it prohibits other signatories from quoting your work in the Nat Stats.

1383 - Granadan Recognition of Trastamara Suzeranity over Iberia [Here you see the year and name of the treaty]

Let it be known, that Emir Muhammad V al-Gani de Granada recognizes the order of Iberia, and in doing so submits to the Throne of Castilla y Léon in name and act, trusting it to defend Iberia and maintain the status quo.

In accordance:

I. Castilla y Léon will send its might to quash opposition to the Emir and his heirs, and turn over to Granada all potential usurpers. Namely, but not limited to, one Head of the House al-Cordobi.

II. At such time that order is settled in Granada, and the luxury of attention has come to King Juan, a conclave will be held in Madrid, where Granada will be annointed into the Kingdom as a subsidary, and tributes of peace will be re-established. As a requirement military alliances with other Christian states must be terminated.

III. Granada will allow agents of Avignon to travel throughout its land to establish a Diocese of Grenada to cater to the Christians established there, and will banish agents of the false Pope in Rome.

IV. Granada will resume payments of Tribute to Madrid, exceptin as pertains to the next clause.

V. As a sign of trust, loyalty, and an understanding of superior claims, Granada will yield up its present possesory interests, claims, and holdings in the Balaeres to Castilla y Léon. This will count as 10 years of tribute, forwarded until 1393.

VI. Granada will maintain soveriginity over its taxes, tariffs, trade, borders, currency, faith, etc.

VII. King Juan will regard the Kingdom of Granada as a fief, bound to protect and foster it, so long as Emir Muhammad V and his heirs remain loyal, obediant to King Juan and his Heirs.

So signed:
~Juan Trastamara I, by God's Grace King of Castille, Toledo, Leon, Galacia, Seville, Cordoba, Murica, Mallorca, Emperor of Granada, et cetera, and Servant of the Catholic Church

xJuan Trastamara

~Emir Muhammad V al-Gani, King of Granada, Lord of the Iberean Moors, & Loyal Retainer of the Supremacy of Juan Trastamara I

x___________________
[The signatories of the treaty can be identified here easily.]

Mechanical Effects:
~Granada becomes vassal of Castille (Alliance, RoP for Castille, Cancelation of other alliances)
~Castille barred from asking for Tribute for 10 years
~Balaeres ceded to Castille

RP Effects:
~Expulsion of Rome pope agents
~Castille to send troops to Granada to solidify Emir's rule
~Castille to turn over usurpers living in Castille
~Castille to host reception for Granada with ceremony in Madrid when situation in granada solidified, and integrate relations across the penninsula to maintain the status quo.
[The realms involved, mechanical and RP (Role-Play) effects are mentioned here.]

So you have a perfectly prepared treaty, congrats. Alas, there is still some work to be done in order to have it work it mechanically. Now all you need to do is to have it posted in the Nat Stats thread.

In order to have the treaty working the signatories of the treaty have to confirm it as well. They can do it by quoting the subject post, and writing their confirmation (like: “In the name of King of Poland I hereby confirm this treaty and all mechanical and/or RP effects coming out of it.”)

EDITING and DELATING posts in the Nat Stats is NOT PERMITTED (unless it's a minor spelling edit and the reason for editing is given) and shall be hunted down without mercy, those guilty will be punished accordingly. Think twice before posting anything there or confirming anything.

It is advised not to post any treaties, just in case, hoping that the other side will confirm it. Do some negotiation first and post the treaty if you are 90% sure that it will be accepted. (this is to avoid unnecessary posts in the Nat Stats) Treaties and agreements coming literarily out of nowhere, i.e. without relevant Role-Play is also prohibited and will be punished as well.

After doing everything as it was described here, there is one last thing to do. You need to ensure that the monks of Morimond will record the treaty (otherwise it will also be considered invalid). To do so, you need to post sufficient information in their Abbey, either by posting the whole of the treaty or providing the link to it; same applies to confirmations (providing links to confirmations are more than enough).

That is all sir. We thank you for cooperation and wish you a fine day.

Special mention and thanks to Busterbunny, the original creator of Abbey of Morimond who did excellent job in gathering bits and scraps of knowledge in the old game.

FROM NOW ON, ALL TREATIES ARE TO BE POSTED IN THE TREATIES DIRECTORY / ABBEY OF MORIMOND (a.k.a. HERE). POSTING TREATIES IN THE NAT.STATS WILL RESULT IN THE POSTS BEING MOVED TO THE ABBEY. ONLY THE TREATIES MANAGER WILL BE ABLE TO POST CONCISE VERSION OF THE TREATIES IN THE NAT.STATS THREAD FOR THE STAT MANAGER.

this will help us keep things nice and clean.

Spring 1383 - Treaty of Syracuse: The End of the 100 YR. Hohenstaufen Dispute

Whereas the legitimate claim to the crown of Both Sicilies had been disputed for a century between the successors of the Swabian dynasty, we who sign this document agree to end the division. The heir through Manfred von Hohenstaufen, Maria d'Aragon and the heir through Margareta von Hohenstaufen, Friedrich von Wettin agree to this irreversible and permanent document, which will legally take effect immediately upon the addition of both signatures to this document.

Upon the signing of this document, Maria d'Aragon will be recognized universally as Titular Queen of Trinacria. Her quartered coat of arms representing both the bastard Hohenstaufen line of Manfred and that of the County of Barcelona will be recognized as the arms of the crown of Trinacria. Should Maria die without a child, that crown will be handed down to her next of kin, through primogeniture.

Upon the signing of this document, Friedrich von Wettin will be recognized universally as Titular King of Both Sicilies. A new coat of arms based on the original Norman arms will be recognized as the arms of the crown of Both Sicilies.

Upon the signing of this document, Friedrich von Wettin and Maria d'Aragon will be engaged to be married and will wed in a church of God in a period no longer than thirty days after signing this document.

The wedding of Friedrich von Wettin and Maria d'Aragon will be officiated by members of both the Roman and Avignonese churches. Until that time, Sicily will be ruled by a regent.

After the wedding is consummated and legal in the eyes of both Church and State, the regency period will end and the kingdom will be ruled by both Maria and Friedrich.

Maria will have no control over Friedrich's lands in Germany.

Friedrich will have limited control over Maria's lands in Greece, and he will be given the titles of "Duke Consort of Athens" and "Prince Consort of Achaea", the latter being only recently recognized by the Avignon church.

After the two are wed, a new coat of arms for their descendants will replace both of their existing personal arms. Should Friedrich von Wettin die before an heir is born to the couple, Maria is obligated to marry Friedrich's younger brother Wilhelm, providing he remains unwed at the time of Friedrich's death. Should Friedrich expire without heir after Wilhelm is already married, Wilhelm will be overlooked as a successor and his younger brother Georg von Wettin will become King of Both Sicilies. Should Maria die without child, the kingdom will be ruled by her husband and his heirs, but the titles of Trinacria, Athens, and Achaea will revert to Maria's heirs.

The official numbering of monarchs will be altered to the following:
Monarchs of Trinacria will begin with Pere III of Aragon, who will be known as Pietro I of Trinacria, and continue on to Maria I of Trinacria and her descendants.

Monarchs of Both Sicilies will begin with Roger I, Count of Sicily, who will be known as Roger I of Both Sicilies, and continue on through the Wettin line to Friedrich IV of Meissen, who will be known as Friedrich V of Sicily.

The official state name of the Kingdom will be "Kingdom of Both Sicilies".
The official state arms will be the arms of the House of Hauteville, modified with two Wettin lions and two Saxon crowns added.
The Kingdom of Both Sicilies will not be under Imperial, French, or Catalan law, although the territories in Germany will remain under Imperial law.
The primary royal residence of the monarchs of Both Sicilies will be in Palermo.
Neither Friedrich von Wettin or any offspring of his will be forced to recognize the Pope in Avignon by this document. Their religious practices are not at issue.

[X] Maria I d'Aragon (Queen of Sicily)
[X] Friedrich IV von Wettin (Margrave of Meissen)

Non-Mechanical Effects:
Royal Marriage between Sicily and Meissen.
End of the Sicilian-Saxon War.
Wilhelm von Wettin is recognized as Duke of Noto.

Mechanical Effects:
Meissen enters a personal union with Sicily and becomes a vassal/tributary (whatever the new rules call an old rules vassal) of Sicily.
Sicily's monarchs change to "Queen Maria I and King Friedrich V".
Meissen grants military access to Sicily.
Sicily grants military access to Meissen.
Custody of the character of Friedrich von Wettin is formally given to Sicily.

D. F. (Meissen) should confirm.

Looks like GA forgot to list the mechanical effects. They are as follows:

- Full defensive alliance between Bohemia and Hungary.
- Full offensive alliance between Bohemia and Hungary.
- Bohemia grants right of passage to Hungary.
- Hungary grants right of passage to Bohemia.
- Seperate peace is forbidden and means the same as breaking the treaty.

The Concord of Samarkand

Let it be known that the great and sovereign realms of the Ottoman Sultanate and the Timurid Horde have agreed, as muslim brothers, to sign this treaty so that the umma of old may be revived.

1) The Ottoman Sultanate, and all the heirs of Osmanli that may succeed him, agree to act in concert with the Timurid Horde and the succeeding fruit of his loins that may take over at his passing. The Timurid Horde also agrees to this fidelity.

2) While united, the two great realms shall endeavor to recreate the Umma of the past, so that the Muslim World may once more be united under the banner of the Prophet.

3) Should either the Ottoman Sultanate or the Timurid Horde find that they have been forced to declare war on another state, the other shall in no way aid or give succor to their foe, no matter what the cause. Such action will abrogate the treaty and cause great dishonor. Furthermore, each state will freely call upon the other to give aid to each other when needed.

4) Should either the Ottoman Sultanate or the Timurid Horde have war declared upon them, they have one year from the beginning of the conflict to request that the other declare war on their foe in turn. In this way, the Umma shall not be brought to an untimely end through the works of wicked men. Failure to assist our brothers in times of war shall cause this treaty to be abrogated and bring great shame upon the perpetrator of such bad faith.

May we be united under the Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him.

[x] As signed by His Most Excellent Majesty, Timur Shah, Successor of Genghis Khan, the Khan of Khans, Great Amir of the Ulus Chagatai, Amir of Samarkand, Jatah and Khorezm, Conqueror of Herat, Khorasan, and Persia, etc
Gameplay effects: Full defensive and offensive alliance between the Ottomans and the Timurids.

The oath of King Martin of Mallorca: qualifies as a treaty between Aragon and the Avignon Papacy. Date: 1384, autumn (autumn indeed?). The treaty is valid until the end of the world: never expires.

I, Martin, by the Grace of God King of Mallorca, from this hour forth shall be faithful to God, St. Peter, the Universal and Apostolic Church and to my Lord Pope Clement and all his successors elected and ordained in a proper manner. I shall not bring it about by deed, word, consent or counsel, that they lose life or members or be taken captive; to the contrary, I shall prevent them being harmed, and I shall aid them to the best of my ability with kindly given advice and princely service. Any counsel which they entrust to me through themselves or through their envoys or through their letters, I will keep secret, nor will I knowingly disclose it to anyone to their harm. I shall aid to the best of my ability in holding and defending against all men the Patrimony of St. Peter, and I shall never cease to donate charitable gifts to the aforementioned Apostolic Church: namely, the aforementioned Apostolic Church shall receive yearly a hundred golden ducats, and more if my Lord the Pope wishes so. And I bind myself and my successors not to try to counter any of these things; and if I or anyone of my successors shall attempt this, whoever he be, he shall lose his rights to the Kingdom. So may God and these holy Gospels aid me.
Also relevant is the Papal encyclical 'Investigatio Noster': http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4356504&postcount=86

Mechanical effects:
- Avignon transfers control of the Baleares to Aragon.
- Alliance between the Avignon Papacy and Aragon (RP-wise: Mallorca. In the case of war, Aragon's support does not neccessarily have to be full, this way representing that the alliance is with but a part of the mechanical realm of Aragon; the exact extent of the support should be determined by the involved players or, at worst, by the event master).
- Loan pact: Aragon (Mallorca) is obliged to give a loan of 1 eco to the Avignon Papacy when asked.
- If the treaty is broken by Aragon, it shall cede the Baleares to Avignon. Otherwise Avignon gains a CB on Aragon.

Major RP effects:
- If the King Martin dies without a heir, Aragon shall cede the Baleares to Avignon.

SaT (Avignon Papacy) confirms, von Streusser (Aragon) should confirm.
