In the current version of the game, do abandoned historical buildings still stay abandoned forever? Is there a way to make them un-abandoned, or do I need to demolish them?

Just use maybe one of the mods called no abandonment ? Those that got abandoned so far may need to get removed manually although you could try one of the mods auto bulldoze
OP means the derelict buildings that are found on some maps

Ah right... Possibly editing map before starting building any city would help. I don't think they are removable otherwise unless they are props and one of bulldozer mods has got an option to remove props/buildings

you can build over them and they'll disappear

Most likely they will still be there but covered. You could even do PO structure over them if they are not removed by building over. To build over you may need road anarchy mod with A for anarchy switched on.

Just try all these tips and see what works.

I think I'll do that. I'm building a city with infinite money, pretty much one block at a time, so obviously some buildings will end up getting abandoned since I haven't plopped down services, commercial areas, and other things they need to live there :p .
They'll be miserable if they can't leave, but I won't have to demolish buildings and replace them, so I'm happy.

Wish there was a way for them to be renovated and put back into use, though.
