Komrade,

Most important would be make it a scenario that you're really interested in writing about. Even if you end up losing, if the game was, in your mind, well played or so fascinating that you can't help it, do that one. There's a newbie AAR thread, and all the advice you could want is really in that.

If the game was a challenge and interesting to you, that will show in your writing. So pick a country that fascinates you that way. And you might want to take a purview of the AARs in progress, and decide if one of the nation's being played right now is one of the one's on your list and being played the same way.

Note, if you're planning a serious AAR and the AAR of that nation going on right now is more comic, I wouldn't think twice about writing it still. But if you're doing the same nation the same way, you might want to think of something different or waiting for that one to finish.

Wales?!

I'm starting a game as Wales.. and I'm curious- has anyone actually successfully played a game- and by "successful" I mean become a reasonably powerful nation. I'm playing EEP and I've noticed that if you go through a number of *expensive* events that make you utter enemies of England, you get one more core province- Cornwall. Later on Wales gets a claim to the Americas due to that myth about some Welsh prince reaching North America in the middle ages... but I don't know if that will give Wales a fighting chance. Right now I've managed to conquer most of Scotland as Wales, but only by being England's side-kick. I also own a bit of Ireland. The problem now is that Scotland's reduced to one territory and seems to have skyrocketing land tech, and my relationship with England seems to be going down the tubes.

It seems the Wales' best chance would be to win a ridiculously successful war against England near the beginning of its existence (which could be anytime because it doesn't exist in the beginning of the game).

Any success stories? Failure stories? Anything?

K-K, shawng1 speaks with wisdom.

It all depends on what kind of angle you're looking for. Right now there are several games running that feature Venice, England and Hungary, so I'd shy away from those countries.

Conquering the world seems to be a hot trend lately, too. So, if you want to join the ranks, then try a major, or a powerful minor. If you want a challenge, then try a one province minor.

There is a wealth of material in the AARland/AARtiFAQs/LibrAARy thread, stickied at the top. The LibrAARY is useful to see what countries are popular, and which have not been written up as much.

Whatever you choose to do, good luck with it.

To my knowledge the only Welsh AAR is a project titled: The Dream of Macsen - a History of Wales , by Pishtaco. It's a work in progress.

So I would hazard that, beyond Pishtaco, you are breaking some ground for the rest of us. Write it up. :)

and don't be afraid to step on out there, either. i was hesitant to do my first AAR, but so far the response has been pretty good. as for format, just do whatever you're comfortable with. i just went with the standard "report" format for my first time, but will probably experiment with other types for my next AARs.

the most important thing.. just have fun with it. even though i haven't done all that great in the game, i've enjoyed it, and i've enjoyed typing the reports.

There's a link to my AAR in my sig; I should post the next installment, up to the 1630s or so, some time this week. There's a link in that thread to some army and leader names you can add, hopefully those will be in the next EEP. In summary I racked up too many BB points conquering Ireland, so the English took it off me. But I am still there, and now making a bit of progress in America. It sounds as if you are doing much better and keeping your BB down; I would love to see a write up of your game.

I never got the event that gives you a CB on Cornwall, I think there must be a bug somewhere. I wrote the event and I will have a look and see if I can find the problem.

Okay, in the file fantasy_wls.txt the Boar of Cornwall event starts like this:

#The Boar of Cornwall#
event = {

id = 20802
trigger = {
event = 20801 # The Red Dragon#
event = 20806 # The Prayer Book Rebellion
}
random = no
country = WLS

However the prayer book rebellion is actually event 20807, so if you want to fix this, change "event = 20806" to "event = 20807" -- be careful with the spaces.

The game doesn't crash with this event as it is, but if you haven't got to 1549 yet and want to fix this I am reasonably sure that you can just edit the file and keep playing.

Thanks for the advice guys! :) The format I am going to do will be like reading history, like a report I guess, know what I mean? Then, in the major events, like a battle or something, Im going to make it more into a story with characters and everything. It should be enjoyable. It would be nice to provide screenshots but I dont know how to... lol. Anyway, i think I will do either France, Prussia, or Austria, not sure which one yet.

And Hamilcar: NO IM NOT GOING TO DO AUSTRALIA!!!!! :D LOL!

Military tactics - link

Hi all,

Just thought that some of you would be interested in this rather in-depth discussion or series of "essays" on military tactics and formations. It pre-dates EU II time period but might provide some a useful oversight to the prevailing tactics through the early 15th century - essentially until firearms began to replace hacking and slashing one another to little bits and pieces. :)

LD: Might be worth adding the link in the FAQ portion of the sticky?

Well, you can start by going to 'AARland, AARtiFAQs, OscAARs and the LibrAARy - for Newcomers & Veterans', which is stickied at the top of the forum. It provides lots of links that could be of interest for first-time AAR writers, incuding info for screenshots.

There's no secret to writing an AAR. Read some of the current AARs, see how they're written up, then decide on your own style.

As for a test thread. Well, this one looks like it would fit the bill. :)
