AAR: Venice Strides forth

GC AAR with venice. Using 1.00 but including the leader and monarch files from 1.06DE. My computer crashed everytime I install the patch so I just extracted the files and moved them over. Brandenburg doesnt go protestant. Played on levely Very Hard and Agressive A.I. As venice eventually runs out of leaders I have added some venetian leaders. 20 to be exact. Although a good deal of them don't appear due to bad choice of id numbers. All the leaders are 2.2.2.0 rank=1 leaders. One admiral and one general show up every 30 years and stay 30 years so I allways have a general and admiral if I dont screw it up. But as I said some of them do not arrive due to bad id number choices. Nothing else is fiddled with, turkey is made a minor to accomodate venice as new great power. I will try to do the entire GC in good detail. I have 11 pages of notes for the years leading up to 1535. I have to say ORANJE you are a hero after seeing the detail and complexety of your aar. My german version has bugs, lots of them the hot keys dont work ect.ect. but this is stuff that has probably already been fixed.

The reign of Doge Augustino Barbarigo (1492-1502)

Augustino sumons me to his court and gives me my first mission, he is a religious man that seeks to destroy the turk. He orders me to plan and execute an operation to liberate morea from infidel hands. I enthusiastically agree.
Immediately I ... spend money on something else.. baliffs are promoted throughout mainland venice. No way I am going to attack turkey on my own.
From abroad I hear that spain has annexed the ifidels of granada. Meanwhile venetian diplomacy has its successes as a mercheants daughter from lübeck is brought to venice to marry the duke of mantua and the daughter of the count of trieste is sent to pest to marry the king of hungary's second son. The count of triest's daughter is a most loyal venetian and an employee of mine. She quickly brings hungary into an alliance with venice. Good girl.
Now that we have an alliance and turkey is at war with the mameluks. No turkish armies in sight. The large 51k army headed south to fight the mameluks.
I actually think that the Doge's command is doable. Venice declares war on turkey! And Princess Maria Lucia of Hungary promtly gets Hungary to join in. The dual command of General C.Borgia(2.1.2.2) and Grimani(2.2.2.0) takes the venetian army (10/5/1)from ragusa towards albania. Borgia, leading the seige failes to storm the fortress of tirana after a breach.

As the new year dawns news of war in europe breaks out. France(Sav,Pap,Nav) declares war on England(Nap). This might lead to a french naples, that is not good.
To our great shock a 50k turkish army is spotted in croatia by the governor of illyria! We are shocked, if that army heads towards venice we are lost. Our only hope is the 31k hungarian army in serbia. Luckilly the turks head for serbia and unluckilly they completely rout and anialate the hungarians, merely 7k hungarian are able to make it north from the battle. The turks take serbia and head south, to albania?!?! where borgia still hasnt taken tirana.
Borgia suddenly has very little time, he storms tirana and takes it. Grimani now takes over the army as he is the better feld general. He decides the best idea is to move south to hellas to avoid the turks untill the venetian fleet can pick them up.
A new hungarian army arrives from the north and starts to siege croatia and another sieges bosnia. The huge turkish army of 42k now arrives in macedonia, can grimani escape?
To the great relief of everybody in venice the turkish army turns towards Thrace, he is heading south to fight the mameluks.
Borgia takes over army again and starts to siege athens. Borgia reports to corfu that a small turkish army in morea is bording a ship. The fleet in corfu which was preparing to pick up borgia and grimani headed by grimani's brother Admiral Grimani (as opposed to Condotteri Grimani, dont ask me it was his father who gave them the name) is immediately ordered to attack the turkish fleet.
South of corfu Grimani (28/30/5) meets a turkish fleet (2/54/1). The turkish fleet is routed and Grimani gives chase.
Our ambasador to poland gives us great news, the king of poland has declared war on turkey. Turkey is truely the sick man of europe now.
At the ciclades sz Grimani(28/28/5) meets the turksih fleet (1/50/0) in combat again the turks are again beaten in a great naval battle and they flee north, Grimani again gives chase. The turks arrive i morea port. Grimani blocades.
Our hungarian allies besiege serbia.
A small turkish fleet (4/0/0) attacks grimani, the turks lose 3 ships.
Our alchemists report that we have reached land level 2.
In april Borgia storms athens and takes the town.

Grimani again takes command and moves on morea where the turkish fleet is under blocade.
Infrastructure 2.
We hear news of the mad son of the count of ferrara. He demands to be allowed to explore unknown lands. He is told that venetians dont do that. But 1000 men join him. We might have to send this young man Cremona to do something, but at present he is told to prepare his expedition. Conqistador.
Another turkish fleet (0/0/2) encounters Grimani (29/20/3) in his blocade and is wiped out. Unfortunately Admiral Grimani dies in battle as his flagship boards one of the turks. Borgia lays seige to morea. The turks in morea sally out to sea. Grimanis replacement Raguse(1.1.1.1) (26/19/3) fights the turks (0/40/0) in cretan sea. This battle is long and hard.
Borgia meanwhile takes morea. The doge decides to wait for the end of the battle to allow the humiliated turks to surrender morea to us.
Things look bad when the mameluks make peace with turkey, and turn worse when Raguse loses the sea battle!
The turks refuse our generous peace offer. We will have to continue fighting.
Grimani/Borgia head for the cyclades to siege them as well. Raguse heads north again after turks into cyclades.
Raguse (28/16/3) fights the turks (0/32/0) again this time winning. Raguse gives chase into agean.
Borgia lays seige to the cyclades.
Raguse(26/15/2) fights the turks (0/26/0) in the agean and loses again. Raguse decides to retire from the battle and returns to crete. This probably ends the sea war as the turks are hightailing it for constantinopel.

Borgia (9/2/0) fails to storm cyclades. The turks again fail to accept the generous offer of morea for peace. The governor of Illyria reports a 40k turkish army in serbia. I just have to ask where these things come from! In march borgia is able to bribe local cycladians and is let through a tunnel into the city and takes it. Grimani now takes over and moves towards macedonia.
From the far north we hear that the German Order has declared war on Pskov. We can only support our catholic brothers with kind words. But otherwise it has little effect on the gossip about the court such as the child C.Borgia had with the daughter of a prominent athenian. Grimani/Borgia recieve re-enforcements and siege macedonia. They are atacked by a small turkish army though Grimani(13/2/0) beats selim the turk (9/0/2) at macedonia. The turks send another big army towards anatolia/black sea coast to fight the poles. The poles have taken bujak and rumelia is on fire.
Selim (9/0/1) Attacks and beats Borgia(10/1/0) during the siege of macedonia. Borgia retreats to Hellas. Grimani takes over a demoralized army to hopeully defend hellas. Selim (9/0/0) Beats Grimani (10/1/0) at hellas. We are being routed!!
To make matters worse the persians now make peace with the turks! We are desperate. In desparation I send a peace treaty to the turks for morea, if they dont accept I will start suggesting white peace treaties, but to my supprise he accedes!! It seems the poles had constantinopel under siege. I gain morea! Mission succeds.
The young madman cremona demands an audience and and army to go explore. I decide to send him to africa. I attempt to trade maps with everybody, only Iraq accepts. Persian gulf coast is now within reach.
Land 5 reached.
Naples makes peace with papacy.

I send traders to Quatar, Damman and Bahrain.
We hear that austria has dowed bohemia, not good. Hopefully the war will be a bloody stalemate. Cremona (C) is given an army and the fleet sails to north africa near canaries to put him on to neutral territory. Generals Grimani and Borgia are sent home to venice.
The german order finishes its war with pskov and annexes the orthodox republic.
I resend traders to Quatar and Damman. The last set of incompetent fools apparently ate with their left hand or something. (left hand being used as well toilet paper in the arab world).
We hear that bohemia surrenders moravia and sudeten to austria, well at least they didnt get annexed.
Our conquistador lands at tassaret and kills all the natives, apparently not as crazy as we thought. Well we not only appease his father but the republic might actually gain something from this adventure. Cremona continues south.
Doge Augustino demands that we now go and take styria! Ididot. We cant fight the austrian. We were lucky, very lucky against the turks. I tell him that we will plan an attack that will work. And them promptly do my own thing. I am facinated by this trade we can do in africa after seeing the first examples of these Black workers.
Turkey finally makes a white peace with poland.
Russia declares war on the infidel kazan.
Cremona arrives in Nouadibuh and kills all the natives again, not that he is trying but they just ambush him. He finds that there is a trading post to the south. He continues south to discover its owner.
Diplomats sucessfully trade world maps with oman and nubia. Spies steal the austrian world map, that helps us not in the least.

We send trade missions to Mombasa and Mogadischu. Cremona reports that the trading post to his south is controlled by portugal. There is little more he can do as we cannot send ships any further south along the african coast and his overland path is blocked by portugal. I contemplate war with portugal, but decide not to pretty quickly when I see portugese alliance.
A trader is sent to Nouadibah.
France, England, Spain and Portugal again refuse to trade maps. We hear of a 36 month peace of inactivity between england and papacy.
Russia gainst 79o and Lipetsk from kazan as peace.

After casually looking around italy I found that the papace has a 21k army in emilia! I only have 1k myself. I build 5k infantry. I need a bigger army, for africa and to defend my home.
A major european war starts as France(Sav,Pap,Nav,Helv) Declares war on Spain(Pol,Per,Loth).

Trader sent to socotra by mistake. I was going to send a colonist but didnt have enough cash so I sent a trader instead of pressing the cancel button. I will send a colonist later. Socotra will be a usefull colony, once it is up and running.
I promote a baliff on crete.
England surrenders calais to france. Spain accepts 250o from savoy for peace. France accepts 250o for peace with naples, as well as 142o from lorraine for peace.

Spain surrenders to France and surrenders artois, luxembourg and 250o.
Hansa declares war on Hanover(Bra).
Poland declares war on Russia (Den).
We have bad news, there is peasant unrest in our provinces. +5 revolt risk for next 12 months.
Russia surrenders lipetsk to poland for peace.

Crete revolts, but does not take fortress. I hope the atritt away before then. Then Corfu revolts! This does not look good. Loyal troops hold the corfu fortress though.

The Reign of Leonardo Lordano (1502-1520)

After some dispute and bribery my candidate Leonardo Lordano is made Doge.
I order a trader to Tassaret as I still cannot afford a colony on socotra. I need 112o to found the colony.
Land 4.
Leonardo demotes me and tells me to hold crete. After all I did for the man. The only reason he is doge is because of me, grr. After the crete order I decide to do something about the revolt on crete. Borgia has moved to his father in rome so only Grimani remains to quell the revolt.
Hansa makes peace with hanover.
Grimani (6/0/0) is sent to crete, he lands on the island and assaults and beats the rebels. I decisde to send him to quell the other rebellion i corfu. Grimani (5/0/0) now assaults corfu and is handilly defeated by the locals and is down to 526 men.
Turkey takes lebanon for peace with the mameluks.

Grimani returns to venice to lick his wounds and await a better day.
Spain declares war on some infidels that call themselves aztecs. I can only wish them luck. Cannot imagine what any such infidels might have of value. If they had gold it might be interesting. But I dont think so...
Oman(Cyr) attacks Aden.
In good news Leonardo kicks all foreign mercheants out of the COT. Local mercheants shout for joy.

Trading posts in east africa are upgraded.
The portugese tradig post at nouakchott has been burned by the natives. Cremona immediately advances in to claim the land for venice, and is promptly killed by the natives, these guys are tough!
Inspired by the fate of cremona and his heroics young men flock to join a new bold commoner named Pontebba. On his on initiative he gathers money and builds a ship. I agree to give him more ships if he agrees to work for us. He agrees, we now have an explorer. I gather a fleet for him at corfu.
Spain makes peace with aztecs, apparently a white peace.
My alliance with hungary expires and austria jumps before I can and aligns hungary. I am alone, I am expecting a turkish attack any day now. I join the allinace with the mameluks and persians. Not an alliance with a future but this will have to do untill later.

Pontebba arrives in Novo Mestre. We make strategic decision to go for africa and asia instead of america. We dont want to be remotely near spain and portugal is mostly peacefull. In the short term this leaves us with bad african as opposed to good american trade. But as soon as we reach india and the indies we will start coining money. Australia will be venetian, if pontebba lives long enough.
Leonardo demands emilia, I ignore him again. The pope is too powerfull. I dont have enough armies to even put up token resistance against milan, austria, hungary or turkey. I am riding my luck in a game with an agressive A.I.

The Reign of Antonio Grimani (1521-1523)

I am outmaneuvered by my rivals and their candidate Antonio Grimani is made doge. I still have my allies in high places, but his reign must be short if I am to retain my power.
A colonist is sent to St Helena. I use an old document by Doge Leonardo so that the new doge cannot take credit.

The colony at St Helena fails, I promptly spread the word that Doge Grimani was to blame for interfering with the preparations.
Admiral Peruzzi arrives to Pontebbas fleet and starts to interefere. Not good. There is mercheant unrest fermented by me against Doge Grimani.
It is heard that the Aztecs surrender 250o and Tuxpan to spain for peace.
Spain declares war on the incas. Do these people ever rest??
I have Doge Grimani assasinated. He gets blamed for the St Helena failure and the mercheant unrest. Now to get my guy into office.

I succede in gettin my ally Andrea Griffi elected to doge. Now I am back at the centre of power.

Attempt to colonize St Helena, this is getting repetetive. You'd think with no natives lots of fish and birds they could survive, but no. No pasta... thats the excuse. Bloody incompetents. I should send them to colonize some nasty african malaria infested hell hole, but they are all dead. I will pick colonists that like seafood next time.
We hear of a Russian DOW on Kazan, again, they dont seem to give up yet, nor succede.
Pontebba finds Walvis Bay. Almost at Table.
Our enemy the turk has beaten Persia and taken the gold province of armenia. This does not bode good for the future.
Heretics have taken over in Thuring and it converts to lutheranism. As if we care, we consider it a problem for austria and spain.
Sweden(Nav,Fr) DOWs Prussia.
Poland apparently takes advantage of russias engagement in kazan and declares war on the muscovites.
Ahh success, seafood is the trick and St Helena becomes a colony.

We hear that Wurtemberg goes lutheran. This is close to us. But still an Austrian and Spanish problem.
The Swedes of the north annex the prussians. How uncatholic.
Enthusiasm for our navy spreads and the locals of corfu provide the navy with 7 new ships.
Sweden(Fr,Nav) now declares war on denmark. These viking of the north are agressive. I hope they attract austrian attention.

Pontebba has discovered table and we start a colony there.
Meanwhile an army transported to noukachott on the new ships kill the natives. They move on to table.
Hansa(Me) declares war on denmark but ends it within weeks, I dont know why I bother.
Hesse and Hansa go lutheran. Thats probably why.

The red sea expedition finds nothing and returns to socotra. Pontebba now heads for india. On this expedition the coast of kerala is found.
We hear from the north that russia again declares war on kazan. Are they still alive??
Spain again fails in destroying the hethens as peace of inactivity is made with the incas.

We send a trader to Goa.
Pontebba returns to socotra and tries to explore the red sea coast again. He finds issas, which is not very interestin while there are still spice provinces in india.
Aden pays 250o for peace with oman. These two countries are now my neighbors and adens continued survival is in my interest.
Pontebba is again sent to india.
Hansa surrender east and west pommerania to poland.
I start to form an anti turkish alliance, milan, moldavia and tuscsany along with savoy and german order. Well the germans said yes.

We hear that anglia gets its own COT. We are curious, and worried. All this new trade centers might start a trend. But we are pleased that in the short term that traders will go elsewhere.

Used the money we got last year to build 20k infantry. In case we need to fight a war. Having merely 8k infantry in europe is not enough.
Poland surrenders posen to sweden. Sweden now has a growing european empire, not just scandinavia. East prussia and posen.
Turkey makes a white peace with persia, the mameluks are in trouble.
The mameluks in turn make a white peace with tripoli.
Navarra pays 250o to get out of war with spain.

Spain gives Roussillon and France Comte to france for peace.

To secure myself against invaders I join an alliance with england and portugal.
We hear that the infidel algerians surredner orania to the infidel morrocans.
In a short message a herold from austria informs me that austria and hungary are now at war with ME!! My old allies hungary with whom we beat the turks have joined the austrians and attacked me. To think that I could have used my hungarian allies to take styria way back when. Now I am paying for the folly of being a good neighbor!!
I call my new allies and england and portugal desert me. I am up shit creek. I have 28k infantry in venice. The austrians and hungarians are attackin with 4 groups of 20k infantry moving towards mantua illyria and istria. I need a plane and I need it to work. Ok the plan is, the usual one, take army march on vienna. Take it try to get white peace, build up big army and alliance and get revenge 5 years from now. I order my army of 28k to move to styria and then to head for vienna. In styria they meet a 30k austrian force, which proceeded to anialate my 28k infantry!! Whoever commanded that force is a genius, and had lots of cavalry. Now my only troops in europe are 4k border guards in ragusa. If austria chose to be agressive they could force a 6* peace. I prepare to offer mantua, illyria and istria. Hoping that I am able to keep ragusa and the wharf.
In irrelevant news we discover the country of mysore. France and Navarra make peace with poland.
The austrians take istria and then siege and take venice. They demand peace. I am shocked, already!?!? They merely want istria and the few pennies that now remain in our treasury. I agree and thank my lucky stars that we survived.
Well not all of us. Doge Andrea Griffi is killed in the defense of his palace. It is rumored that the war was started by one of my political enemies that promised austria istria in exchange for removing Griffi.

The Reign of Pietro Lando (1539-1544)

The plot to remove my influence with austrian help has failed. The rumor became strong and all true venetians gave their support to Pietro Lando a third cousin and an old friend from our service on the same ship in our youth.

In Pietro Lando's will it stated that he wanted Franco Donato as the next Doge. This suits me fine as Donato and I frequent the same houses of pleasure and we know all of each others dirty little secrets. Although his are worse than mine.

Austria declares war on us again! Big austrian armies stomp on me, and again I have no allies. I can only hope to lose only one province.

In the adriatic there is a naval battle as my fleet is forced out of venice after the austrians storm it. Admiral Lominelli 0/6/0) beats Austria(7/0/0) in the adriatic. While Austria (24/0/0) stomps on the venetian army (3/0/0). Our army is wiped out. It takes 84k austrians to siege and take venice. In revenge I torch the austrian trading post in india. To my great supprise they torch my trading post in mogadishu!?!?
Austria then offers me peace for 36o. What the .. they lost more than 36o worth of troops and trading posts in the war. I just hope they learn not to attack again.
Meanwhile the palatinate annexes lorraine. A new majorpower?

The moghuls are just attritting and are now down to 33k. They are just standing there. Facing my 2k infantry just to the south.

Again my enemies triumph with the election of Laurenti Priuli as Doge. My faction is under serious strain as the noble families of venice start to unite against my families domination of politics.
Pontessa finds timor.
Our ambassador in Poland is insulted and we as a result have a 12 months CB against poland.
Austria again declares war on us. Austria takes advantage of our weakness. As we still havent built troops since the last war. We have focussed on improving our lands. I ban trade from austria. He must learn his lesson. Austria again takes venice and takes peace for 68o. What does he want?!?!? My maps? If so the AI is smart, but I dont think so. As there are no new austrian trading posts. He lost alot more than 68o worth of infantry in the siege of venice.

As I the only heir of the Vigingo famil walk down the corridors of the Doge palace pondering how to regain power for my faction I am stabbed in the chest by an assassin. As my life flows before my eyes I know this, I am venice, venice without me is nothing. Venice will fall. Venice will lost its empire and venice will be a vassal of austria. Only time will tell. But now that the last Vigingo is gone, venice is not venice no more.

As the computer was doing my 10 yearly autosave the game crashed during the rewrite of the autosave file, thus the file is only half written. I lose the old file and the new one is icomplete. I just lost 65 years of EU play just because of the autosave, this is crap luck. Hope you enjoyed the aar.

Hehe that was great and long hehe took me about 2-3 days to read it off and on of course schools kept me busy. IT was very good to bad austia kept going after you some much or else you would have done well.

I did do well. I had most of india, the indies, the cape ect.ect. I was a major colonial power. I was just inable to beat the austrians. I was beginning to expect to lose ragusa so I was starting to consider building a wharf in venice. But then the game crashed and I lost the savegame.

I don't understand why you don't make alliances in Europe..is clear a European country is ready for attk you...maybe papacy, Austria , Turks, etc.
I play a short game with Russia in a friend house and in the first years i try make alliances with countries in the borders of nmy enemies..Sweden and Poland and make alliances with Denmark, Bohemmia and a serie of small german states.
