can see the French joining in, purely on the basis that they don't know what the British are trying to gain, but whatever it is they shouldn't be allowed to get it. The British entering in the first place is a lot harder to justify.

Certainly it seems like gameplay would benefit from wars between great powers being, relatively speaking, rare.

I don't think France joining the war was a problem. They were promised some land for it and both their army and navy was twice as big as the british one so they were significantly stronger than them (at least on paper since we don't know about techs). In these conditions, even if the AI took into consideration than Cuba couldn't deliver on their promise and that France would have to fight for it on their own, joining the war was still a reasonable decision since France should not have that much of a problem doing it and it's still free land they can aquire without suffering from the usual infamy and decreased diplomatic relations it normally costs.

It was a bit unclear from aar, did he peacefully vassalize Somali states and then annexed them without war, just through diplomatic play? Its the only way to annex subject, right?

Unrelated point: I would really appreciate if the person making aars was adding more screenshots of just the whole world map and a date so we can see more whats going on in the wide world. Tbh I would love most to just see such observer mode aar.

He did fight them as they were not happy to be subjects let alone be annexed. They were not very strong so they were quickly defeated. I suspect if a subject is happy the diplo play for annexation will lead to the subject backing down and just being annexed.

Ethiopia seems to be one of those countries that can expand with some impunity in early game. I do hope though that this play through goes far enough to see more interactions with the great powers.

For overland trade. Oversea trade creates a trade center on the port the import/export happens from.

I hope this AAR doesn't get killed because it's my favourite one so far. Also now Russian-style nihilism is confirmed as an ideology and I'm glad lol. Devs did their research.

Since they had four other wars going on, it might be they really couldn't spare these 10 or so battalions for a year. Or maybe one of the enemies was a major naval power and the French were afraid they wouldn't be able to mount this operation logistically in hostile waters.
This seems like a reasonable way to lose a war to a native uprising, not an AI mismanagement of things.

I must add, the game starts to look more and more complete, I couldn't be happier reading the AARs. I'm still having mixed feelings about certain choices devs made, but I barely have doubts that the game will be great anymore.

Really ? I just assumed that french troops didn't arrived in time to put down the uprising.
If the Suez canal wasn't build yet, they had to go all the way around Africa and with no one to protect the colony in the meantime, the native took over.

Maybe dried/salted/smoked? Iirc salted pork especially was a big thing at least throughout the English speaking world.

They'll probably do that more in the livestreams when they can more quickly and freely move the camera around without having to take screenshots for everything.
