can see the French joining in, purely on the basis that they don't know what the British are trying to gain, but whatever it is they shouldn't be allowed to get it. The British entering in the first place is a lot harder to justify.
Certainly it seems like gameplay would benefit from wars between great powers being, relatively speaking, rare.
I don't think France joining the war was a problem. They were promised some land for it and both their army and navy was twice as big as the british one so they were significantly stronger than them (at least on paper since we don't know about techs). In these conditions, even if the AI took into consideration than Cuba couldn't deliver on their promise and that France would have to fight for it on their own, joining the war was still a reasonable decision since France should not have that much of a problem doing it and it's still free land they can aquire without suffering from the usual infamy and decreased diplomatic relations it normally costs.
