I have asked in the Paradox Reddit page this certain question/request but I am also coming here more opinions (probably helps I am asking a bit more clearly too...). I am running my very first mega-campaign AAR, doubt any of you have read it honestly it's not that good. I could be doing better but that's likely my writing style clashing with my inexperience. Slight spoilers ahead for anyone who has indeed read my current AAR, so if you would like to be surprised do not read on.

Now then I am stuck at where I want my AAR to end up, that is to say when I reach Hearts of Iron IV what I want my nation to look like. I am playing Poland (reforming Slavic faith btw) and my original goal was to make a Polish/Russian Empire sort of thing. Think early 20th century Russian Empire but not prone to communism.

However I have been having second thoughts about my end goal, mostly because I don't want to be too powerful when I end up in Vicky 2 or HOI4. The other reasoning is I do not like blobbing all over the map, it's a boring story and just not fun for me. I know all that land in Siberia has very low supply and doesn't give much of anything really, but I feel like I would be too OP for when I get to HOI4. So I looked around and thought about a Between the Seas Poland with holdings across Eastern Europe would be something to strive for.

I will admit I am partial to the Intermarium simply because it's usually how I like to play my games. Modest but strong in my own right, not crazy paint the map but good enough to scare others away for a time. I am only in the CK2 portion of my AAR but eventually I will get to EU4, when that happens I want to be sure of where I will take my country.

One last thing I want to do during the AAR probably around EU4 to Vicky 2, is to take a lot of SE Asia. Indochina or Indonesia doesn't matter too much to me. If Intermarium then I would try to get the Suez canal as well, but if Russia style then that won't be needed really I think.

Lastly I have no-go zones in my games during certain playthroughs (areas I don't like playing or conquering with a certain country) and it's in effect here. Anything really west of Poland (Baltic coast is fine to take in my eyes) is not going to be touched, Byzantium/Ottoman lands and most likely going to leave Finland alone too. I am fine with leaving Siberia to be filled in by an AI but they would have to do it. Uncolonized land kinda drives me mad at the end of Victoria games. I already have an outline for my idea groups so I am good there, just how to expand my eventual Empire.

tl;dr Should I work towards a Russian Empire kind of Poland or Between the Seas Poland for when I hit EU4 in my mega-campaign AAR? I also want SE Asia if possible. Won't go west or into Byzantium/Ottoman lands. Finland might be off-limits.

Probably a truism here, but this is your AAR. Your goals and desires are what should drive both the AAR and gameplay to make it appealing. I completely understand the fear of blobbing all over. I have the same problem. I find that it creates boring gameplay since the AI isn't particularly difficult to curb stomp once you reach a certain height. It leads to boring AAR posts, imo, since everyone know knows what's happening: another war, another massive victory!

I don't see anything wrong with your original plan, assuming you manage to progress "slowly" through deliberate actions on your part so as not not become a blob too soon. Also playing the role of balance of power overseer whereby you might help other larger powers attain their regional dominance isn't a bad thought since they'll become future opponents as you progress. If you feel you can't achieve that slow progress discipline, then I concur with your alternative plan since that may be the most attainable route to not become too powerful too soon.

Best of luck to you,
Cheers!

I see. Then I think I know what I will end up doing now, thank you for your input :) I would update it today but well I got very little sleep last night, and a dentist appointment went on for almost twice as long as it was supposed to. So I am indeed a fair bit drained, however when I am tired I make good decisions (usually) and have really good ideas (again usually...). Honestly taking a peak at your signature makes me hope whatever this AAR and any others I do would be half as good. Compared to my inspiration in fact mine is downright sloppy, at least I am learning as I go :p

I find that trying to roleplay rulers' traits and those of their immediate advisors can be helpful in avoiding power-gaming. As @volksmarschall says, it's your AAR. You should make it enjoyable for yourself first and foremost. Not everyone enjoys painting the map after all.
