1569: French forces conquer Lorraine and we let them off easy with a white peace (saving them for later)

1571-1583 – Expanding in Africa

1571-72: We begin to upgrade the tax and judiciary system in our newly conquered provinces. We also rearm, again.

1573: We declare war on Lorraine. Almost immediately Denmark (Russia), Prussia, Venice, Morocco (Algiers) and Mysore (Hyderabad) declare war on France.

1574: We conquer Lorraine and receive a large sum for peace. King Charles dies and his son Henri is our new king. French forces honour the new king by conquering Lithuania from Prussia.

1575: French troops take Eastern Prussia, and we annex Prussia. We take control of Ostlandet, Sealand and Morocco. White peace with Venice.

1576: We annex Denmark and make a white peace with its ally Russia. Turkey declares war on France and French forces conquer Kosova and Bujak

1577: French troops take Toubkal and Sahara, allowing us to annex Morocco. Turkey cedes Kosava and Bujak to get peace. King Henri orders a diplomatic offensive towards Venice and our diplomats shower them with gifts.

1578: Venice stuns the Catholic world (and me) by joining the Turkish Alliance.

1579: We declare war on Lorraine, our favourite country to pick on. We conquer Lorraine. Algiers and its ally the Hafsid Empire declares war on us.

1580: French armies capture Orania, Atlas, Al Djazair and Aures.

1581: White peace with Lorraine. Venice declares war on us but its Turkish ally dishonours the alliance. Russia declares war on us. We conquer Kabylia, Tunisia and Al Djazair (again) allowing us to annex Algiers. We conquer Venice but make a generous white peace.

1582: French troops take Tripolitania and France annexes the Hafsid Empire. White peace with Russia. French diplomats persuade Venice to join the French alliance.
King Henri dies an untimely death, too much drink and too many women has worn him down.
Regency (average) is established to manage France until Prince Henri comes of age.

1583: (Tech update – land/naval/trade/infrastructure (13/13/4/5)
The regency orders a build-up of French forces all along our eastern border.

Thanks for clearing up the matter of Lorraine's independence, why do you not annex them?

1584-1593 – The Great War with Poland-Lithuania and Turkey

1584: We declare war on Poland-Lithuania (ouch 3 stability hit). Turkey tries to take advantage of the situation and declares war (Hedjaz, Oman and Aden). We call in our allies (Sweden, Teutonic Order and Venice) to aid us against the Turks. French armies take control of Bessarabia, Galicia, Posen, Krakow, Serbia and Podolia. We lose control of Lithuania to Poland-Lithuania.

1585: French forces conquer: Krementjug, Rumelia, Podlasia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Cyrenaica, Ukraine, Mazovia, Hellas, Albania, Pripet, Poltava, Chernigov, Belarus, Belgorod, Donetsk and Lithuania.

1586: French forces conquer: Bosnia, Mozyr, Morea, Alexandria, Thrace, Dobrudja, Anatolia, Vorones, Smolensk and Kursk. Lorraine declares war on us.

1587: The following provinces surrender to France: Konya, Egypt, Smyrna, Tula, Polotsk, Bogutjar, Ingermarland. We make peace with Hedjaz and Lorraine. Russia (Persia) declares war.

1588: We storm Pskov and Annex Poland-Lithuania. We pay a large sum for peace with Russia (Persia). In Turkey French troops conquer Angora, Trabzon, Aleppo and Lebanon.

1589: Kaffa, Judea and Adana surrender to French armies. Venice makes a separate peace with Turkey. Prince Henri takes the throne as King Henri. All over the kingdom rebellions are breaking out due to war-exhaustion, a lot of people want to end the war with Turkey, but the new King demands no less than the total destruction of the Turkish Empire (damn my stubbornness!).

1590: We conquer Samaria, Delta and Cataract from Turkey. Mysore declares war and we pay a small sum for peace. The rebellions continue; not even our core provinces in France are spared.

1591: French troops manage to take Egypt and the Nile, but our reserves are stretched thin and only the Kings insistence that we see this to the end keeps us going. Sweden makes peace with Turkey gaining Sivas.

1592: Rhodes and Syria surrender.

1593: Russia and Persia declare war on France. French diplomats pay a large sum for a quick peace agreement. Our political stability is taking damage from the ongoing war (stability –1)
We finally conquer the last Turkish stronghold in Adana (was retaken by Turkey earlier).
We annex Turkey! France is at peace after a full decade of war, and French forces can now suppress the many rebellions in our kingdom.

< I must admit that during this long war with Turkey I almost settled for a 3-province peace. Only my inbred stubbornness kept me going when the rebellions broke out all over the place. At its worst I had like 15-20 rebellions each month (lucky for me I still had garrisons all over the place).
Early in the game it is easier to wage wars lasting a decade or more, because you can tweak religious tolerance and minimise rebellions. But at this stage in my game I have 5 religions in my kingdom and no amount of tweaking can prevent those rebellions.>

Now stop this disgraceful behaviour!!

For some obscure reason, your nobles are quite happy with invading Lorraine because France has this god given right over Lorraine of course so no problem with stability.

So you DOW them and then three seconds later you sue for a white peace What did Lorraine ever do to you to deserve such appalling treatment? As far as I can see, Lorraine has a much stronger CB on France in your game than France can ever have on Lorraine.

So do it properly. Either annex them, since that's why you have a CB, or remove that national shield.

Now, I hope I've made my views clear on this matter.

I would have to agree, just annex Lorraine already. Besides, the presence of an independent Lorraine surrounded by French provinces is kind of weird.

Seriously, I was getting a bit uncomfortable always DOWing Lorraine, and thats why I declared war on P-L (when I could have DOWed Lorraine). In a-not-so-far-away future Lorraine will be annexed. I have this from reliable sources

1594-1603 – The Great War with Russia and Persia

1594: Venice graciously agrees to become our vassal.

1595-96: We rebuild our depleted forces and enjoy the peace.

1597: The Mughal Empire refuses our trade, The Royal French Colonial Company starts a little war to restore normal trade again. King Henri makes a public declaration of war on the Mughals (Mysore) as a show of support. Oman (Aden) declares war on us and Georgia and Ethiopia declare war on us as well. We make peace with Oman (Aden) for a very small sum of money.

1598: Lorraine declares war on France, this time we will not be so soft, Lorraine will cease to exist as a nation. Russia and her ally Persia declare war on France, fresh French armies move into enemy territory. We conquer Sochi and Tver.

1599: French troops conquer Lorraine and Lorraine is annexed! (I told you!) A decisive victory in the province of Georgia allows us to annex Georgia. We make a separate white peace with the Mughal Empire, our small colonial army can now concentrate on Mysore.
Elsewhere, french armies capture: Kirkuk, Azow, Moscow, Novgorod, Crimea, Kars, Kujbyschew, Hamad, Lipetsk, Iraq, Karelia, Saratow, Kalmuk, Vologda and Awhaz.

1600: We make a white peace with Ethiopia. French forces continue their irresistible advance into enemy territory, conquering: Bangalore, Volgograd, Azerbadzjan, Lugansk, Tambow, Kouban, Tabriz, Onega, Nuyssaybin, Ryazan, Mysore, Isfahan, Basrah, Astrakhan, Armenia, Deccan.
The Royal French Colonial Company annexes Mysore in the name of King Henri. Hyderabad declares war on us as a result.

1601: French troops conquer: Uralsk, Elbruz, Vladimir, Orenburg, Persis, Balucht, Samara, Kujbyschew (again), Kazan, Irgiz, Hyderabad, Mekran, Orsk and Hormouz.
We annex Persia.
The rebels in the Lowlands have given up. French troops move in to restore order in the area (patience is a virtue!)

1602: The Uzbeks declare war on us. French troops conquer Ust Urt, Deccan (again), Aralsk, Madya Pradesh and Tenghiz.

1603: French armies take control of Turkmenistan and Amou Daria, allowing us to annex the Uzbeks.
The last Russian stronghold in Turgai falls into French hands and Russia is annexed.
The French Colonial Army in India conquers Nagpur and Hyderabad (again) and annexes Hyderabad in the name of King Henri.
Sibir declares war on us and is annexed within the year.
On the diplomatic front The Teutonic Order agrees to become our vassal.

Let them off easy! You've just declared war on them, crushed their armies, sacked their capital and then you turn round and say, "oh why not forget about the whole thing and be friends again". I mean you don't even install a puppet regime to do your bidding. Just the same guys who hate your guts.

Now if that's how you treat pets, there are plenty of animal rights people you would just love to "talk" with you

Just to see how "loving and caring" a neighbour you have been, why not have a quick look in one of the save game files. Check out the population of Lorraine from before independence from Austria and compare with now. Bear in mind that this is just the capital and the figures only give the change in population not the total deaths. In fact, if you give me the numbers and dates I can work out how many of your "pets" have been removed from the gene-pool.

Actually, I've seen some cases myself where populations have got decimated for some reason or another (presumably when one province becomes Europe's battleground). For example, I've got a game with Berlin's population only now getting above 10,000 by 1740! But uit wasn't ALL my fault

1604-05: King Henri performs a diplomatic miracle by convincing our vassal Venice to join the French Kingdom. The Catholic world recognizes Henri’s greatness by making him Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (I have a feeling that this title will be French from now on, no other Catholics left to compete with my monarchs)

1606: We receive news from the New World. The Royal French Colonial Company declared war on the Aztecs and annexed their nation for the glory of King Henri. Hedjaz (Nubia), Etiopia and the Mughal Empire has declared war on us. French forces capture Jordan, Arabia, Nubia, Sudan, Batn Al Hajar, Tabuk and Bisharia allowing us to annex Nubia.

1607: We conquer Mekkah and annex Hedjaz. Furthermore french troops capture Massawe, Aurangabad and Delhi.

1608: The colonial army captures Madhya and makes peace with the Mughal Empire for Aurangabad and Madhya. King Henri flies into a rage demanding to know why the company did not annex the Mughal Empire (clicked on their peace proposal by mistake, but I do not reload so..) The Company’s right to keep a standing army is revoked, in the future it is to concentrate solely on colonisation, the King will take control of the colonial armies in the New World and in India. In Africa we capture Agra and Keren.

1609: Issas surrenders and we annex Ethiopia. The king demands future conquest in the New World and so we declare war on the Iriqouis.
King Henri convinces the Swedes that they will be better off as our most valued vassals.

1610: We annex the Iriqouis. Our great King Henri dies and another de Medici woman is made regent (also HRE).

1611: We declare war on the Inca Empire.

1612: We annex the Inca Empire. We declare war on Oman (Aden).

1613: French forces capture Al Hharam, Yemen and Zanzibar. The Mughal Empire declares war on us.

1614: French troops take Delhi, Mascate, Jaipur, Masirah, Agra, Dofhar and Aden. And France can annex Oman, Aden and the Mughal Empire.

1615: We have a new king. Long live King Louis XIII (also HRE).
The Teutonic order is now part of France (diplo-annex).

< That leaves me with Sweden as an ally and China, Japan and a country with a name I am completely unable to spell correctly. Lets see how long it will take to get through all those large fortresses in the Far East >

I hate to interupt , but I have one question. Are you colonizing as much as you can , or are you sending traders everywhere?

My colonists (2 per year) are mainly used to convert all those muslim and pagan provinces I have conquered.

Other than that I mainly use the colonists to build strategic bases (Roanoke in America, Goa in India, Taiwan near China and Japan, etc.)

This was never a game where I wanted to spend any time colonising.

So I may even have committed the mortal sin of letting some of my colonists go to waste
