1492-1508 – The long war
1492: King Charles publicly proclaims his intention to conquer the French provinces currently occupied by the evil Spaniards. There is a persistent rumour that Charles has an even grander scheme for settling the score with Spain, he has been heard talking smugly of an “Iberian Gambit”
A recent survey, however, indicates that we are at a distinct technological disadvantage vis-à-vis our neighbours. All resources are therefore directed towards improving our military technology.
1493: We now know how to make metal cannon balls (land tech 2), further research in this area will hopefully reveal a way to use them? We add 3 new army corps to our standing army, we now have 5 army corps.
1495: We have discovered how to make artillery (land tech 3), we start building these clever contraptions immediately, all French army corps will soon have artillery support.
1496: Our clever inventors have found a way to improve the performance of our artillery pieces (land tech 4).
Confident in the strength of the French military king Charles declares war on Spain and its allies (Naples, Poland-Lithuania and Milan). Our allies are not called to assist in this war.
French armies move to conquer Artois, Luxembourg and France-Comté. Spanish military forces are quartered in the Iberian Peninsula and it will take some time for them to reach French territory. Spies report heavy recruitment of troops in the Spanish Lowlands.
1497: Artois and Luxembourg fall into our hands, 2 armies invade Flandres and Hainaut.
A large Spanish army is moving through France on its way to the besieged provinces.
France Comté falls into our hands, the army moves to Rousillion.
Flandres and Hainault surrenders. French troops invade Zeeland and with the support of another army corps defeat the Spanish forces there. One army corps moves on to besiege Friesen. Another corps is held in reserve as the Spanish army settles in for a siege of Luxembourg. All Spanish forces in the Lowlands have surrendered.
1498: Luxembourg falls to the Spanish and they move on to Artois. French troops move into Luxembourg and lays siege again. Both Luxembourg and Artois change hands several times during the next couple of years. Rousillion falls, the army moves to Cerona. Zeeland surrenders to us and the troops move to Holland.
At this crucial stage of the war King Charles dies and his son Louis takes the throne. He vows to continue his father’s Iberian Gambit at all costs.
1499: Holland and Friesen surrender, in the north only The Hague is still in Spanish hands.
Cerona surrenders and a siege begins in Aragon.
1500-01: French troops conquer Catalonia, Aragon and Castille. In the north The Hague surrenders. After the fall of Castille the large Spanish army in northern France moves south in an attempt to relieve the Spanish homeland. French armies move south to counter the new threat.
1502-06: French forces conquer The Iberian Peninsula. The remaining Spanish troops on the mainland are destroyed.
1507: The Spanish strongholds in Sardinia, The Baleares and Sicily fall.
1508: French troops control Malta and the Canary Islands. The grand plan of the late king Charles has now been carried out. King Louis announces that Spain and all of its possessions are now the property of France. Spanish allies rush to negotiate immediate peace with France.
Massive recruiting is undertaken to crush any rebellions in what was former known as Spain.
King Louis announces that in the near future all resources must be directed towards improving our infrastructure and trade. After 12 years of constant warfare the country needs time and money to flourish once again.
