The crusade seems rather harsh. Playing as Poland I`ve brought christianity to all the baltic states, and finland. As a result I can just about keep the piety loss to -1 or 2 a month (haven`t gotten the crusader trait). There has been absolutely no gain in piety!!

Judging from other posts the crusade can go on for hundreds of years, I`ve had it for about 10 years, and I`m running out of heathens to kill!!

Do I really have to invade the holy land?? I`m tempted to delete or modify the Crusade event, as it seem nearly impossible to please the pope (warmongering git!)

i hear you, my current crusade is entering its 25th year... i'm a count of Mazovia, and i've conquered all of the pagans in Prussia, Lithuania, Finland and now i'm moving on towards south east, Volga, Smolensk, and plenty of others... my piety is around 2500, and i've gained some proestige, too... however i run at low efficieny, as i run out of people to give titles to...
might be a time to relieve my liege, King of Poland of his title... hopefully that will give me a bigger province allowance...

There really needs to be a better explanation of the Piety loss from Crusades expectation. In my Ireland game I was losing between .7 and .9 per month, and with payments I kep my increase at .7, so I generally broke even or went down a bit. Then I went on a crusade, took several provinces from the heathen (Malta, Tunis and the provs on either side, Nubia and Sudan), and kept most of them. I turned the four I kept into Bishoprics and now I lose 1.4 piety per month, for a net loss of .7

So I crusade, do fairly well (especially compared to the nothing I did for the prior 50 years), and lose more piety because of it?

Innocent, that's because your nation is larger-- I don't know whether levels of titles cause an increase in crusade expectations, but demesne size certainly does. Certainly gives an incentive to shed excess land.

exactly... i started out losing 0.7 piety (that got me even, since i gained the same each month) but now i'm at -4 every month...

I'm not sure if I've interpreted the crusade thing correctly, but I've come to the conclusion that you shouldn't do more than necessary to keep your piety at a reasonable level. I mean if you lose about 1 piety every month then you have to add some piety now and then, not all in one go. Especially since piety is not inherited this is important.

The point is that this is one of those 'under the hood' things that serves to annoy the player - the gameplay reason for it being this way is almost totally irrelevant if the player doesn't understand why they're paying the price for it.

While I'm not sure I like the way crusading periods affect piety, I think that the main problem is the length. In my Meath game the Pope has kept the first crusade rolling for nearly 60 years, and I'm getting tired of not being able to increase my piety. Especially since crusading really isn't an option, with my small and technologically inferior forces.

Maybe the expectations needs to be tweaked so that your church donations can outweigh them when you're not so large.

Result: Piety plummets. (is negative piety possible, a la Michael Jackson?)

Thought that was negative Stewardship??
But excellent intrigue. ;)

Back on topic: The expectations are rather harsh. I liberate half of Iberia, from Barcelona to Braganza to Bajadoz, and yet I project that within five years my monarch will hit zero (and keep on going :().

excellent exchange :)
however, my current ruler is old and frail, and his heir will be starting with very little piety, and not many pagan/muslim provinces to conquer... and after that his osn, will probably have a negative piety, unfortunately :(

It's a formidable problem. One solution is to create bishoprics (note: adding land to existing ones does nothing), which will also boost your piety. Start with the most worthless lands... ;)

no, the crusade system definitely must change in my opinion. i had as castille, wiped out all muslims from europe, africa, and the middle east, there were only a few small muslim nations left near southern russia. now, i dunno what the pope wants, but the holy lands and MUCH MUCH more was taken under christian arms. obviously, the system needs to be tweaked a bit

yes, i did create quite a few of these... i'm running low on ecclestical educated courtiers, though... :p but then again, i do get a lot of piety as the formerly pagan lands convert to my religion, so i'm save for now...

PS and if i control the Pope, is it safe to assume that i can call off any ongoing crusade? i mean 29 years and running... that's more than enough for anybody but Lionheart, really

My longest crusade was about 30 years. There were quite a few muslim provinces left, but almost no pagans. I think after a certain amount of provinces have been taken, the Pope should call it off, say 10 or so.

However, making a bishopric an ARCHbishopric will gain you, in technical terms, "tons" of piety.

And if you have a spare kingship lying around, it's almost worth it to make someone a cardinal, because all of a sudden your piety problems are instantly over.

You tell me this after I've gotten rid of all my ducal titles. ;)
