Yes, that is a very good point. The fall of the Byzantine Empire is the start of a new era, hence, EU3.

Oddly enough the only time I ever say Byzantium last till the end of the game was a game me and friends played as American Indian Tribes... We did columbus in 1819 and was like uh... so this is Europe...
Byz and the ottomans were huge... some german minors went and took english territory on the islands... Sweden took most of Scandinavia and northern russia. And the main Alliance war at the end was
Byz (greece, albania, eastern yugoslavia, territory up to hungry, transylvania, up to Moldavia), Austria (slighty bigger then normal), Poland (2x as usual), and Venice (who owned northern italy up to papal states and bordered on Genoa)
VS.
Naples (who had southern Italy), Spain (who was normal size but was kicked BYZ arze in Greece) Portugal (who was kicking polands arse in Danzig) and England (who was look as if she was kicking naval butt, but she did get Malta from BYZ like 3 days before the end of game
I'm all for the novelty of things but overall... Its just a game, if only people had this much passion over things that REALLY matter =)

I actually like playing as Byzantium in EU2, but I find it HILARIOUS that Paradox chose the exact day after it's final destruction to begin EU3. :rofl:

It was an unsubtle message indeed.
Why do you think 1453 is such a significant year? The fall of Byzantium effectively marks the end of the crusading era and is a natural bookmark for any game. Well my plan as soon as I get my retail is to modify so that the game starts in 1419 again. I think even that is a little too late personally....

I think you're quite right. Isn't 1453 seen by many as the end of the Middle ages and the beginning of the Renaissance? As opposed to 1419 that has only significance as being exactly 400 years before 1819?ComradeOm said:

Well I liked the fact that you started in EU2 near the end of the middle ages, and actually experienced the beginning of the Renaissance, rather than starting at it's beginning.

the HYW is the one part about EU2 I miss.
Although the AI could never effectively win the HYW from either side, so I suppose that's worthwhile.
