War in the West
The Nationalist armies seize Ya'an and continue their push into the mountains.
Nationalist troops are exhausted, so one division is sent forward to occupy Kangding whilst the rest of Xue Yue's army recuperates.
Quijing falls to the main thrust of the NRA and a minor Yunnan counterattack is brushed off.
von Falkenhausen's fresh troops are put on trains to Quijing to assist Chiang's forces in securing the province.
Disturbing news from Japan. On the 12th of October, Prime Minister Okada Keisuke is forced to resign and Hirota Koki takes his place. The new Japanese cabinet consists of numerous hard-liners and militarists. The threat from China's Eastern neighbour is beginning to intensify, and with the Republic bogged down in conflicts with the warlords there exists no effective means of fighting it as of yet.
Better news four days later; basic machine tools have finally been installed in Chinese factories. Funding for the Yong Li corporation continues in order to improve them.
On October 20th, von Falkenhausen's troops finally arrive in Quijing.
With these reinforcements an attack on the Yunnan capital of Kunming is launched. Long Yun is at the head of his troops, in an attempt to defend the heartland of his domain.
It is not enough. A day later, the warlord troops break and von Falkenhausen's army marches forward to occupy the city.
On the 1st of November his army arrives in the capital. Unfortunately, the Yunnanese will to resist is strong, and they have established many strongpoints in the remote mountains. The campaign will drag on for a while longer yet.
The assault on Kangding from Ya'an has been halted in disarray, but with Chiang's forces in position to the south it is successfully launched again. Japanese saboteurs damage the production facilities at Hanyang, setting back the issue of new cavalry equipment by several weeks.
von Falkenhausen's army in Kunming has reorganised somewhat and has been joined by 30,000 reinforcements.
With this in mind the offensive continues west into Xiaguan.
However, the Nationalists are faced by Long Yun again, this time leading the largest concentration of his troops encountered so far in the war. It is clear more troops will be needed and the assault is called off.
Kangding is finally captured and seven divisions are sent north to secure the province, as well as providing support for another assault on Xiaguan.
However, some have been watching the slow but steady progress of the NRA into Yunnan with growing alarm. On the 7th of December, 1936, East Asia finally explodes into a major war. Hirota Koki and his hard-line cabinet in Japan have decided to crush the upstart Chinese state before it can threaten the Rising Sun's status as the dominant Asian power.
The Second Sino-Japanese War has begun.
Apart from the lightly armed Shanghai police and security forces, the NRA has not a single division on the east coast with which to fight the Japanese. The IJA may have just chosen the right time to attack...
