Well, I've been playing HOI2 and lurking on the Paradox forums for a good while now, and I decided it was about time to do my own AAR. So here it is, with my favourite nation, Nationalist China. I'll try and make this a combination of story and gameplay, if all goes to plan.

1.3a Arma beta, Hard/Normal with CCIP. Enjoy.

A White Sun over Asia

January 1, 1936

1_start.png

The Republic of China, one of the world's great powers - on paper. Despite its millions of people, an enormous army, and a respectable industrial base, China is wracked by internal strife, division and corruption. The internationally recognised government in Nanjing controls barely half of Chinese historical lands, and unrest agitates a quarter of the state's population.

In 1936, the situation of China will begin to change, and not all for the better.

President Lin Sen sits at the head of the long table in the Nanjing Presidential Palace, whilst Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek paces the room.

The ministers of the Nationalist government fidget nervously in their seats.

"A new age for China begins today, gentlemen. The first item on the agenda is the state of our armed forces. It is clear that a new direction is needed. Minister Yan, your recommendations?"

"General, as I have told you, there is nothing that can be done until more supplies, more soldiers -"

Chiang cuts Yan Xishan off with a wave of his hand.

"Nonsense. More soldiers are useless without proper training and weapons and you know full well supplies are useless without proper supply distributions. All these are in a dismal state. I have increased funding for the arsenal at Hanyang and the National Machine Works, and the esteemed General von Falkenhausen is assisting our reformation of the NRA along modern lines."

The bespectacled German officer sitting on the sidelines nods approvingly.

1_tech.png

The Generalissimo sighs. Yan Xishan is managing to drain enormous amounts of supplies and industry almost singlehandedly to strengthen his power base in Shanxi. Many would like to see him, and many others, tried for corruption and insubordination to the Chinese state, but China needs these men... for the time being.

1_yanxishan.png

"... which brings me to my next point," the Generalissimo mumbles to himself. "The production of our newest army is being put on hold. We are channeling all our available resources into implementing large-scale anti-corruption and aid programs. Our economy is severely crippled from corruption, nepotism and general unrest. The Kuomintang will enter February with the full backing of the Chinese people."

1_production.png

The ministers stop their fidgeting and stare at the Generalissimo, speechless, with the exception of President Lin, who nods approvingly.

"I have also asked General Zhang to improve training standards for our soldiers."

1_diplomacy.png

"The halt to military buildup does not mean we have gone soft. All available forces are being deployed to the northwest, to halt the CCP's expansion," Chiang spat.

1_armymoves.png

"That's all for today."

The ministers shuffle out. This will be a year of change for the Middle Kingdom.

I'd like to see a Chinese AAR with starting later. These 1938+ scenarios seem much more difficult for China.

Yeah, I had a think about it being a little easy and realised I've played far too many Nationalist China games, so I've bumped the difficulty up to Hard. We'll see how it goes.

Also changed to JPEG.

... oops. I saved my new JPEGs as greyscale. How silly of me. Um, I'll avoid that for the next update.

The Chinese Civil War in Shaanxi

An envoy is sent to the Ma warlords to increase the level of cooperation between KMT and Ma troops. In practice this entails Nationalists assuming full responsibility for deployment and organisation of their ally's forces.

2_milconxibei-1.jpg

On the 15th of January, an ill wind strikes China; industries mysteriously begin to collapse, the quality of its soldiers begins to decline and its enemies grow in strength, perhaps due to some strange cosmic force.

2_hard-1.jpg

On a more positive note, enough gold reserves have been amassed to increase Chen Lifu's intelligence network.

2_intel.jpg

A probing attack is launched by 1 division towards Xianyang. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Communist position is more or less unassailable at this time.

2_jan29.jpg

On the 1st of February the bulk of the Nationalist forces are in position to strike at the CPC.

2_feb1.jpg

Their plans are interrupted when Ma Hongkui's ragtag forces are attacked by 60,000 PLA regulars in Lanzhou.

2_feb1_lanzhouattack.jpg

The drained warlord troops manage to hold for four hours before retreating to Tianshui.

2_feb1_lanzhouretreat.jpg

The first attempt to utilise the improved espionage network is a failure.

2_ethiopia.jpg

In retaliation for the battle of Lanzhou, General Feng Yuxiang leading a mixture of KMT and Ma troops launches a counterattack on lightly defended Guyuan.

2_guyuan.jpg

It fails miserably. The Nationalists have a convenient scapegoat in the Ma troops, who lose much of Chiang's confidence to participate in offensive operations.

2_guyuandefeat.jpg

A day later Lanzhou falls to the Communists.

2_lanzhoulost.jpg

Tianshui is attacked by Communist forces trying to cut off the Ma troops retreating from Lanzhou.

2_tianshuidefeat.jpg

The first battles of the Chinese Civil War in 1936 have shown that the Communist forces will not be defeated by numbers alone. The last trickle of divisions marching to Shaanxi are diverted southwest to guard against the KMT's 'allies' in Yunnan and Guanxi.

2_movements.jpg

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Ethiopia falls to the Italians.

2_ethiopia.jpg

All the Nationalist forces in Xi'an are in position and an assault into Communist territory is launched.

2_xianyang1.jpg

6 to 1 odds are not enough to overcome mountains, fortifications and rivers.

2_xianyang2.jpg

Tianshui falls. Fortunately, Ma Hongkui managed to withdraw rapidly enough to avoid being overrun.

2_tianshuilost.jpg

A counterattack is launched on Tianshui under the direct command of the Generalissimo.

2_tianshuiattack.jpg

Even Zhu De and his experienced troops are not able to hold off odds of 16 to 1.

2_tianshuivictory.jpg

The numerous failures of the war have greatly weakened the standing of Chiang's hard-line direction for the new year. On March 2, Zhang Xueliang takes the Generalissimo hostage and forces him to cooperate with the Communists against the Japanese threat. Chiang backs out of a military alliance, but is forced to sign a peace treaty. Zhang is promptly imprisoned.

2_xian.jpg

Unfortunately for Zhang, the Generalissimo has no intentions of fighting the Japanese just yet. The Communists have inflicted a series of embarassing defeats on the NRA, but perhaps the warlords to the south will be less proficient...

Interlude

On the 7th of March, Hitler sends troops into the Rhineland in violation of the Versailles agreement. No action is taken by the Allied powers. As China has good relations with Germany and is building a rapport with the UK, stability in Europe is in its best interests. There are larger concerns closer to home anyway.

33-7_rhineland.jpg

The arsenal at Hanyang has been retooled with the aid of German blueprints to produce modern weapons for the National Revolutionary Army's infantry. Funding is diverted to the Yong Li Alkali Company to improve industrial machinery.

34-22_infresearch.jpg

The next two months are completely uneventful, albeit with the steady flow of troops to the south. By the 7th of June the NRA is in position along the Guangxi border.

36-7_forces.jpg

Five days later, the tensions between Nanjing and Guilin reach breaking point. The steady flow of reinforcements to the Japanese army in Manchuria has warlord Li Zongren on edge, and he demands China strike first, backed by popular sentiment. With all its troops in the south, the Nationalists are in no position to comply with his demands.

36-12japanreinforces.jpg

36-13guangxicivilwar.jpg

Li's proposal is rejected, but Guangxi troops try to march north through KMT territory anyway. Nationalist militia encounter a huge Guangxi army south of Xiamen, and immediately disengage, taking a small number of casualties. Clearly, this is an act of war.

36-14war.jpg

The cunning if cynical Chiang has been preparing for this eventuality, however, and the bulk of the NRA is poised to march south into Li Zongren's power base...

Nat China has huge potential and is fun to play. Subscribe! ;)

Indeed they do have huge potential :)

I have a friend who played a Nat China game and he managed to turn China into a power that surpassed even the Soviet Union both in terms of industry and manpower. He built loads of serial factory runs and just turned China into an industrial juggernaut to surpass the Soviet's and rival even the United States.

Good AAR though, I shall be watching this one.

Hey, interest. Yup, that's why I love Nationalist China, it starts off pretty poorly but can become a superpower within a few years.

Now I've played till 1st January 1937 and everything has gone berserk, I think you'll enjoy this.

The Guangxi War

General Wan Fulin and 170,000 NRA troops attack Guilin, the Guangxi capital, whilst Chiang leads an army group south into the strategic city of Bose.

Incidentally, where is Bose exactly? I can't find any information about it on the net.

36-15advance2.jpg

The Guangxi forces crumble in Guilin after 2 hours and seven divisions from Shaoyang march south to occupy the province.

36-15guilinvictory.jpg

The assault on Bose is not going as well. Chiang's forces have to bridge the Li river and attack Guangxi forces well-entrenched in mountain terrain. The enemy general Lindemann, whilst inexperienced as a field commander, has a sound grasp of defensive tactics and is a fast learner, having grasped the basics of mountain warfare in less than a day.

36-15bosetrouble.jpg

Nationalist troops are exhausted and the attack is called off.

36-17bosedefeat.jpg

Two divisions seize Liuzhou, the defenders of which were brushed aside in the first hours of the war. Guangxi troops marching to relieve the province are beaten back by the Nationalists.

36-25liuzhoucaptured.jpg

With a full army group now arrived east of Bose in Liuzhou, Chiang marches south again. This time, Lindemann's troops are severely overstretched and are forced to retreat.

36-27bosevictory.jpg

However, the diversion of forces in Liuzhou formerly supporting the advance on Guilin has allowed Guangxi forces to halt the advance on their capital. Another attack is ordered, which swiftly succeeds. In the same hour, Guangxi troops take Xiamen, the city attacked on the first day of the war.

36-30.jpg

von Falkenhausen is attacked by a leaderless Guangxi division in Liuzhou. Nobody has any doubts about the outcome of this battle. Three divisions against Bai Chongxi himself counterattack Guangxi forces to the east in Chao'an to disrupt the Guangxi advances there.

37-5.jpg

The counterattack succeeds despite only fair odds and Pan Wenhua takes one division south to occupy Chao'an.

37-5chaoanvictory.jpg

Unfortunately, the Guangxi advance remains undisrupted. What looks like one division turns out to be four. This incident exposes the myriad failings of Nationalist battlefield intelligence; this will have to be corrected sometime in the future.

37-8.jpg

Guo Chan's militia have fought well but are driven back again.

37-9.jpg

Pan Wenhua's troops occupy Chao'an and are immediately driven back.

37-12.jpg

With the capital of Guilin in Nationalist hands and the main Nationalist armies poised to drive to the South China Sea the southern warlords sue for peace. Chiang accepts, not wanting to draw the other warlords or Japan into this just yet.

37-18peaceoffer.jpg

Guangxi accepts the peace and cedes the entire south coast to the KMT. Unfortunately, as a condition of the peace many Nationalist troops in Guangxi territory are immediately stripped of their arms and put on trains heading for Nanjing, and will be unavailable for the better part of a month.

37-16accepted.jpg

Just as one war ends, another begins on the other side of the world.

37-17SCW.jpg

With the spoils from the Guangxi war the KMT is able to fund another research project. The department in Xi'an is put to work on a census tabulating machine.

37-18.jpg

The Chinese foreign intelligence network is now developed enough to benefit from another increase in funding.

37-19intel.jpg

Rear area supply dumps have been established for the NRA and the next project is slated to be upgrades to cavalry forces by the arsenal in Hanyang. Germany also sends aid to Franco in the Spanish Civil War.

37-20.jpg

China on the 21st of July. The National Revolutionary Army has moved away from Guangxi borders, and large numbers of NRA troops are on trains heading west...

Woohoo, Guanxi deserved it and should have also been annexed.
They are just provincial governers, you have all the rights to remove them.
Or actually only Pu Yi has the rights.
