I've never tried this, though I've wondered if anyone has. If Britain DOWs you, all its satelittes will not because they have a defensive pact. If you wait until you war is over, and then DOW one of the Indian satelittes, Britain will have to take the major DOW during peace treaty period penalty...right?

And since at least one of those satelittles is likely to go bankrupt and be at -100 prestige, you can do this for only 1 prestige yourself.

Or, if you are at war with Britain and its satelittes, said satelittes will probably offer peace long before Britain - meaning you can pull much the same trick in DOWing them exactly 5 years later...thoughts?

You really think it's wise to go to war with England only to make them take a 100 prestige hit, even assuming this works? You will either get steamrolled, will be stuck in a forever war since they won't want to make peace due to higher military rating, or you'll beat them - but if you can beat England then why bother with the little satellite tricks? Just humiliate them.

No, he's right, it does work.

In an early game I played as China, desperate to avoid the Opium Wars, I conquered my way to a small British satellite in northern India, just beyond Nepal (it's name escapes me). I took the prestige hit to declare war and invaded. Yes, the UK honored it's defensive pact and also declared war on me.

So I occupied the one-province Indian minor and humiliated it. Suddenly, the war was over, Britan's troops went home, and the Opium Wars (trigger is voided if there's a peace treaty bewteen UK and China) never occured.

But as to it being effective as a means to destroy the UK, it would take quite a while. They usually rack up a good 2500 prestige from colonies in most of my games.

Doh you're right, I don't know what I was thinking - you wouldn't even have to fight England when you DoW a satellite, just take the satellite out within a month. With the amount of satellites England has you could conceivably make it lose thousands of prestige quickly. That would probably impact some of their industry as they would no longer be able to get raw materials off the WM and would be limited by what they could produce, wouldn't they?

After you do that to one satellite, won't you then have a peace treaty with all of them meaning you could only do this once every 5 years?

Nope. The satellites have defense pacts with England, but not with each other. Therefore they wouldn't be bound to assist in these wars as England isn't being DoWed on, it DoWs on you honoring its defense pact. In other words, if you attack England, they would all jump in and be bound by a treaty after, but if you attack a satellite only England jumps in.

Too bad most of the satellites are uncivilized... or it would be a very good way of turbo-annexing the UK.

Wait, though. You can't annex the satellites. DON'T ANNEX THE SATELLITE, WHATEVER YOU DO! THE WAR WON'T END!

Ah I didn't know that, sounds like a good way to get peace with the UK. And yeah, do NOT annex the satellites! Get indemnities or even white peace, but if you annex the satellite you actually have to fight the English!

I ruined a perfectly good game as Panjab before I heard that advice. :(

I gobbled up three of the satellites and I was going for the last two I need to for Mughalstan -- then I realized I didn't share a border with the two last states.

I've yet to try it, what can I say I fear the Brits, but I hear attacking India and occupying it really deals the British a bad blow >granted this isn't Prestige wise but manpower< Since I guess they generate the bulk of their manpoer from India, snag it away and bam.

Or you can can just buy it off them. Britain loves useless claims, and the African coast and interior is simply ripe for claim exploitation.
