I've been thinking -- with all the little discoveries that were made during World War II, I think an "inventions system" like in Victoria 2 would fit this game very well. BlackICE solved this by having a tech tree that covers everything and the kitchen sink, and seven kitchen sink techs and doctrines, but HOI4 is a less "inclusionist" project that can't have this level of detail.

So why not have things like breaking enemy codes and various small discoveries and innovations simply be handled the same way as the discoveries in Victoria 2? I'm thinking of 'fancy' things that are too small to be represented by techs, at least outside of BlackICE :p , but which are interesting enough to be put into the game. Things like IFF transponders, camouflage designs, targeting computers, experiments with night vision, better penicilin, improvements to "dud-prone" torpedoes, that sort of thing. You can look at Vicky 2's list of inventions for inspiration.

Of course, in HOI4 your biggest advances would come from simply researching techs and improving variants, but it'd be cool and good for immersion, and also educational, to have these things unlocked that made your troops better and also taught you a bit about WWII.

Some of these discoveries would simply be timed, with a certain chance to happen and a time window, others would be tied to tech advances and maybe even battlefield/strategic experience. Some could even be nation or region-specific -- for example, if you fight in the cold long enough you could be rewarded with a discovery on ski infantry warfare, which would increase your troop movement in snowy conditions. I suppose it's entirely possible to make this system too deep, but it would be cool to have some things that you had to do some specific things to unlock.

This would also give the game more of a realistic and unpredictable feel, as you won't know exactly when you will receive certain advances, or in what order. I'm fine with techs having a set time (I'd love for them to have a random chance to be finished slightly sooner or later, but that's another discussion), but it'd be interesting and immersing to not know for sure when you'll be given various advances.

PS: please don't start a discussion on how features are set in place and this would have to be DLC or patch material -- that's pretty much a given at this point and we don't need 10 people pointing it out.

I think it may work as long as they weren't super specific and balanced, as well as being more dynamic and predictable.

Ski infantry was already a thing for a long time, but I could imagine, say "turning a tank cannon onto it's side" and wham, a Firefly. Things that researchers might not discover, rather civilians, ground troops, or children might discover.

Examples might be:
Remove the shield off an hmg
Easy-store chocolates (like M&Ms)
Improvised communications (good in poor nations like China or Iran)


Can't think of many, but I know others would

Nice thinking, Keeper of Safes :). One of the things that I'm not entirely happy with in the tech system is the absolute certainty of knowing when something will be researched, down to the day. This kind of certainty just wasn't there during the period, and having something like the discoveries system would keep the 'big' things predictable, but would mean there's a bit of variation in some of the details.
