A very strange course of events happened in my latest 1936 game as Germany.
I did the usual, Poland - France (created Vichy) - Denmark - Norway. Then I annexed Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Turkey (also Iraq and parts of Persia to aquire some oil) and then proceeded to war with the Soviets which I won.

After I had invaded the SU, Hungary DOWed them and continiuasly asked me for a military alliance, which I always declined, because I wanted to annex them and Romania after the Bitter piece.

After the Bitter piece I was at war with the Allies, and soon during Barbarossa the US DOWed me.

The strange this is that the US was not a member of the Allies, and they were fighting their own war, against Japan, Germany and Italy and for some reason Vichy France (probably to land in N.Africa), They also were at war with Hungary for some reason (probably thought they were joining the Axis). The Allies were also at war with the Axis and Japan.

Then I declared war upon Hungary, which then, without my knowledge was at war with the USA and the Soviet Union. When I DOWed them they automaticly joined the Allies as always happens in these occations, and what happened now was a ahistorical catastrophy:

The Allies were all of a sudden involved in Hungary's war with the Soviet Union (just a strip in Siberia after Bitter Piece) and the USA.

Soon after that, for some strange reason, Brazil (out of the blue) DOWed France, and therefore the Allies.

The US, at war with Germany and Italy, the Allies and Japan (basicly the whole world excluding the Soviet Siberan strip), invaded Canada and annexed them. Returned to status quo with Vichy France and thats how far my game has extended.

Funny stuff :p, but completely unrealistic.

A very strange course of events happened in my latest 1936 game as Germany.
I did the usual, Poland - France (created Vichy) - Denmark - Norway..
Here you started to go a little “ahistorical”, but not too important...
...Then I annexed Bulgaria...
"Big" non-historical, but not important in relation to the "big players" of the war.
…and Turkey (also Iraq and parts of Persia to aquire some oil)...
hehehe, here another "big" non-historical but this time with game engine trigger implications in at least 1 or 2 big players of the war.

After here the events & triggers just put the game in a kind of "free for all" mod...

  • The above is a clear signal of the flexibility of the HoI2 base. You (the player) play historical; very likely you get a historical start & development of the game.
  • On the contrary, you start to deviate from the "original plan", very likely you will get a non-historical game (like it happened with you or will happen with anyone who tries the same).

Unfortunately the same can't be typed about other Paradox developments based in a more recent but not too different game engine.
  • In this; the game goes “ahistorical” 99.99% of the time even if the player tries by all means to keep it historical (in here the "AI" determines the “pace of the war”, not the player).

I had a slightly similar (though not on the same grand scale) situation in my last game with Communist China. After slugging it out with the other factions and eventually dominating China and warring with the Japanese, the Japs offered me a white peace which I accepted, having annexed all Chinese factions except Guangxi Clique. I joined the comintern, this was around '39 I think. Shortly after the white peace with Japan, they slapped a guarantee of indepencen on me. So, of course, when Barbarossa started, the Japs declared war on the axis! Later on, they declared war on the US after the surprise attack events, and the US joined the allies, putting Japan at war with both the axis and the allies.

I asked them for a non-aggression pact which they agreed to, strat redeployed my 80 or so experienced inf to Europe to help out the soviets. Even with my extra weight it was a tough fight. I concentrated on taking out Finland and nazi-occupied Norway in order to allow the soviets to concentrate on the german front. In '44, the Americans landed while the communist forces started to pour into Germany. The forces met at a line one province west of Berlin, making a really cooly semi-historical Iron Curtain situation, with the exception of Norway becoming a Stalinist puppet, Yugoslavia staying democratic, and the Soviets annexing Italy (including Greece and the Adriatic coast), since the allies weren't at war with Vichy and thus didn't reach Italy.

Anyways, back to Asia, I redeployed my troops in late '43 since the tide had turned, and declared war on Japan as the non-aggression pact had expired, which put Japan in the awkward position of being at war with the axis, the comintern and the allies at the same time! :) I got them with paras a couple of years later, after the brits had failed in a prior amphibious landing, grabbing the northern parts of the main island for a while but getting driven out by the japs.

The situation in Europe. Germany dominates the continent.

The situation in Africa. The Italians have beaten the British in Egypt. Note, though they appear strong, the bulk of their military victories have been the Afrikakorps; 3 MEC and 3 ARM.

The situation in Asia. The US have taken a big piece of China.

The situation in America. The US have annexed Canada.
