as far as I know AI merchant republics tend to embargo other merchant republics - just for being what they are.

calling off the attack on Milan and changing priority to Sus was as wise choice - there is no need to lure Bohemian doomstacks into Italy right now :)

1424-1425 : Venetian Africa is born

In January 1424, the doge raised land maintainance, in preparation for the war with Morocco. The governor of Ifni reported that the Moroccan fleet had been spotted. In it there were 7 carracks and 4 cogs. The Venice admirals drew a plan to catch it in the Meditteranean, where the Venice navy, composed mainly of galleys, would be at an advantage.

The Moroccan fleet was on its way into the Mediterranean, the fools were at war with the Mameluks. The Venice fleet positioned itself in the Gulf of Almeria, waiting for the Moroccan fleet.
Venice's troops landed in Tlemcen, still held by Algerian rebels, but which was bound to fall any day. The Moroccan fleet delayed so one galley was positioned in the Straits of Gibraltar to keep track of Moroccan movements.

On the 4th of March, as both fleets were in the Gulf of Almeria, war was declared on Morocco. The allies were called to arms as well, so that they would be busy and not think about starting other weird wars.

And the Moroccan and Venetian fleet engaged in the Gulf of Almeria. Obviously, war taxes were immediately raised.
All our allies dutifully entered the war. The army that managed to land in Tlemcen marched into Melilla. It turned out that we didn't need to worry about Morocco's carracks, because Castilla's fleet soon joined the fray.

But there was something we did not think about, the defeated Moroccan fleet retreated in Melilla. It would have been better to catch it far from Morocco.
The crusade benefits kicked in. We choose Nice as a gathering point for the troops meant for Morocco. We created two fleets, so that one will patrol the Gulf of Almeria and the other would retrieve troops from Nice. But the fleets needed to be repaired too.
Venetian and Moroccan troops engaged in Melilla while Castilla sieged Atlas.

The battle was easily won.
Foolishly, Morocco's fleet ventured into the Gulf of Almeria and was again engaged by the combined Venetian-Castillan fleet. They lost and retired - again. This time to Toubkhal.
Meanwhile the Moroccan penetrated into Tlemcen.
In September 1424, a loan was repaid. There was only one left. Inflation was meanwhile at 5.8%.
In October, we laid siege to Toubkhal.
The Moroccan carracks were engaged in the Staits of Gibraltar

In November 1424, the doge moved the slider towards free trade, as expected of a merchant republic.
We learn that there are no short wars. We win another naval battle in the Straits of Gibraltar, for the first time we lose a ship.

In January 1425 began the siege in Safi.

In the Coast of Morroco the Castillian and the Moroccan fleets engaged. We soon joined.
There was a revolt in Krain.
On the 7th April of 1425 Melilla fell while all of Morocco was under siege.

A gift was sent to Hungary, to help them rebuild an army and to improve relations. The revolters in Krain were defeated, with huge losses.
They were routed in Görz, as the doge joined the army and using his maneuvering skills had caught up with them. Some troops were retreated from Morocco, as there were not really much to be feared there and opportunities in Europe may have arisen.
In June 1425, Fez and Fuig fell - to the Castillian. In July, Safi and Toubhkal fell. The Moroccan fleet had to leave Toubkhal and was engaged in the Coast of Morocco.

The Doge arrived in Sus and ordered an assault, because he was tired of the war. But it failed. Meanwhile, Castille and Golden Horde made peace.
Two Carracks were captured in the Battle of Coast of Morocco, but a galley was lost. The Doge wondered whether this was a sign of God and he should try to get more provinces from Morocco,
but the provinces Toubkhal and Safi seemed very poor to him.

.
In November 1425, Castille made peace with Morocco. As fresh trops arrived into Sus, another assault was ordered, and the province was taken.

Morocco was desperate and was ready to make an incredibly good deal for us. He would cede Toubkhal, Safi and Sus. The infamy cost for three provinces would be 3.0 . While the provinces did not seem very rich, they had strategic value. And Tangiers did deliver some good tariffs. Capturing 2 carracks from Morocco seemed also a sign of god that the deal should be accepted.
But the doge wanted to burn some prestige first, because he standed to get 24 prestige from the deal and he already had 87.
It was about time to extend Venice's sphere of influence. Mantua, Ferrara and Naples were incorporated into Venice's sphere of influence.

An so it was. On the 10th of November 1425, the deal was accepted. A new entity, called Venetian Africa, was born. It included the provinces of Toubhkal, Sus, Sufi, Tangiers and Ifni in Morocco.

Some days later. Algiers declared war on Morocco, but that did not interest us.
The Doge requested a statistics of incomes worldwide. Venice had still the third highest income, but the gap with Castille was closing. And noticed that Burgundy was at war with England and raising war taxes.

He wanted to know also how much was the gain from tariffs in Africa. The African provinces seemed ok.

But it was obvious that it was a pain for Venice to maintain both and army and a navy that could defend a budding empire. Expanding into Italy became all the more necessary and the Doge was pleased that now it was "Likely" that Castille would join Venice in a war against Milan. Regrettably Hungary was still busy with the Golden Horde and had a pretty small army, so it was decided to wait for the war weariness to wear off.

The year 1425 ended

1426-1427 : Closing the technology gap

The news wasn't unexpected, but nonetheless shocking. Venice lagged behind in technology. Overextension, stability hits, not being in the HRE, wars, minting. There were many reasons.
Something had to be done about this. Also Venice's allies, Hungary and Castille, were lagging.

Expansion had to be stopped and the technology gap had to be closed. Both Liguria and Milan had better land and naval technology than Venice, and that wasn't acceptable. Land Technology 5 had to be researched ASAP. The last loan was to be repaid, but another had to be taken.

Austria left the trade compact - bad omen. Savoy entered an alliance with England and declared war on Burgundy and Switzerland, but they could not involve us because they were called to arms themselves. But that meant they would not help in a war.
The Doge Ludovico Barbarigo came to pass and a new doge had to be elected - he turned out to be even better than his predecessor. Welcome Niccolo Zustiniani.

Savoy was totally overrun by Burgundy and Switzerland. Meanwhile, fortune helped us. We gained 243 ducats.

We helped crush a revolt in Corfu. Milan made peace with Naples. Savoy made peace with Burgundy and annuled the alliance with Venice ! The Mameluks annexed Tunisia.
Milan was somehow now at war with Ferrara, Bavaria, Mainz and Modena. Austria was now allied with Savoy. The Doge noticed with pleasure that Castille was now "Very Likely" to join a war with Milan - or with Austria. We discovered "El Djouf".

And at last we could repay the last loan. No loan left to pay. But, Modena was sieging "our" Verona, while Milan's main army was in Ferrara.

Bohemia was also at war with Bavaria, Main, Ferrara and Modena, A small Bohemian relief army was spotted in Tirol. Burgundy made peace with England and got Calais and Gascogne. Burgundy was truly blobbing. There was a revolt in Tangiers.
In preparation for the war for Verona, a gift was sent to Hungary. Somehow, Castille had a very small army, but they certainly didn't need any money.
And in April 1427, Land Technology level 5 was discovered.

eh... Hungary always lags behind in tech - heavy minting and poor provinces combined with regular wars and orient tech group are to blame for that... and don't worry about Castille - in my (painful) experience they tend to summon armies out of nowhere in no time...
:)

btw who are the allies of Milan? aside from the Emperor of course :)

1427-1428 : There Is No World Without Verona....

The Infantry is updated to Longbows, but we do have some Muslim Archers left from Morocco who won't get upgraded and will be disbanded over time. Army maintainance is raised. There were troops fighting rebels in Tangiers, but luckily they had just won.
In preparation for the war, Bohemia's administration is infiltrated. There are two stacks which are bigger than Hungary's. But we won't be able to help Hungary fight them before killing the stacks of Milan and Genua.

But before going to war, we also spy on Milan, and a loan is taken. We succed at the second trial - there are no evil stacks lurking.

So war with Milan is finally declared. This is the diplomatic map on the 27th May 1427.

Immediately the Armata di Verona marches towards Verona. But something weird happens, Switzerland joins Bohemia in the war.

We spy and lift the fog of war on Switzerland as well, while Castilla is invading Corsica. Milan's stack is lured into Verona. Meanwhile, France gets excommunicated.

Genoa asks for white peace, and we accept, since total victory is out of the question. Infact, we are outnumbered, but war weariness is taking its toll in the enemy's camp.

Meanhwile, Bohemia is crushing Hungary, and will have to be dealt with later. A third Bohemian stack popped up out of nowhere.

The battle of Verona is won and Milan's army retreats towards Brescia, where Switzerland's stack is waiting with full morale. We have no choice but pursue. Castille's army is still in Corsica. Astonishingly Switzerland's army retreats to Mantua so that in Brescia total victory is achieved.

Corfu's army lands in Parma while Switzerland's stack walks towards Verona. As our army is given the order to march from Brescia to Verona unsurprisingly the Swiss stop and stay in Mantua. And then the unexpected happens.

Austria ! Of course, they also have a mission in Italy. We'll deal with them later. Meanwhile our main stack marches toward Mantua ready to engage Switzerland.
Trade level 5 is discovered. Bohemia's stacks are rampaging in Hungary.

In Mantua, Venice's stack gets a terrain malus. Meanwhile Corfu / Venice win in Parma. Savoy also invades Genua. Northern Italy looks pretty crowded.

The battle of Mantua is won, but Austria gains a casus belli on Venice : border friction, because the national focus is in Görz. Meanwhile Castille lands in Parma.

Switzerland's army is routed in Cremona.

Meanwhile the African army is also brought into the war theatre . The balance of soldiers is now in our favour..

To burn prestige( capped) Firenze is added to Venice's sphere. And Verona is assaulted and conquered by Venice's main stack, led by the doge.

All of Milan is under siege. Milan is ready to cede Verona. But we would like them to release Parma as well. So the sieges go on. Switzerland peaces after we pay them 25 ducats.
Castille now controls Parma. But Bohemia rages in Hungary, and that must be dealt with. So in the end we sue for peace and make Milan cede Verona and join our league, so that we could concentrate on beating Bohemia.
And so, on the 15th January 1428, Venice acquires Verona.

1428 : The Hungarian front crumbles - Bohemia invades Venice ( or tries to)

Next Mission will be Brescia.

The situation in Hungary seems bad, but Bohemia's armies have low morale because they keep assaulting. I start positioning my armies
so that the stacks can be killed while they are separated and have low morale.

Regrettably there is a revolt in Toubkhal, but our troops are in Europe.
Shockingly, Hungary accepted peace with Bohemia and releases Croatia. That is not surprising, considering the beating they have taken.

After a little shuffling Bohemia's troops seem to want to enter Slavonia and then Krain. I will be prepared.

And Croatia joins the war. We are at war with Croatia as well ! Maybe Castille's AI will know what to attack then....
We are also dangerously low on manpower.
While we build a constable in Treviso, at last Bohemia decides to attack in Krain

And we quickly outnumber them, using the troops we had kept in reserve in the neighboring provinces.

We burn prestige expanding influence on Epirus. While the battle rages in Krain, another Bohemian army enters Grotz, but Castille's army is about to engage them.

The battle of Krain was won.

We split the army to catch up with the two armies retreating to Slavonia and Croatia.

Bohemia has enough and would like to peace, but there are still soldiers to kill

Slowly but surely, Bohemia's troops are wiped out. A second Castillian army lands in Dalmatia.

While Austria is busy in Milan.

You should be able to vassal Croatia, it will weaken Hungary but it would be a real shame to have their provinces fall under foreign control (and honestly Hungary usually does a very poor job of reclaiming Croatia in my games).

1428-1429 : Croatia vassalized

Some troops are shipped to Africa, since Bohemia's army has been wiped out. Croatia comes under siege.
Castille takes Dalmatia while a Bohemian army is defeated in Wien (we still have military access through Austria).

The revolt in Toubhkal is crushed while a Bohemian army is destroyed in Steiermak

Another battle and suddenly Bohemia had no army !

The first Venetian troops march into Bohemia

In February, the sieges of Slavonia and Croatia are over.

As it stands, I swallow the infamy pill and declare Croatia my vassal. Not before declaring the State of Milan my sphere of influence. Then on the 13th February 1429 Croatia becomes a Venice's vassal.

The defeated Croatians were given the honor of the arms and accepted the vassalization with dignity. The Doge commissioned a painting to celebrate the event.

Great going lately, adding some more gold, a prosperous core province, and a vassal that's in a very good location for Venice.

The Austrians are starting to become annoying, soon (judging by your feedback comment) holding two provinces that clearly rightfully belong to Venice. :D

1429-1430 : The occupation of Bohemia

A marketplace was queued in verona. An "infamy" advisor is hired.
The doge ordered to occupy the weakened Bohemia.
While Bohemia goes under siege a couple of battles happen.

The sieges continue while Austria annects Salzburg. TO burn prestige I declare Liguria my sphere of influence.

Venice kills the unit who were in the production queue and easily occupies Bohemia

Naval technology also is discovered.
Subsequently Bohemia is again without troops and is not building any. A revolt is crushed in Ifni.
Bohemia is desperate and sues for peace offering provinces, which we cannot accept because of the self-imposed limit on infamy. Regrettably Bohemia has not much else to offer.

Meanwhile Savoy made Milan release Parma. Brescia regrettably is occupied by Austria.
In Tuscany the situation changes and Pisa joins Firenze, while Siena becoms independent.
The doge is reelected. We lose 1 inflation.

Burgundy ruler gets excommunicated. At last, in August 1830 Breslau falls and all of Bohemia is occupied.

1430-1432 : Morea, Siena and Urbino become Venice's allies

The Doge could not grab provinces from Bohemia - the infamy hit would be too high. But he prolonged the occupation so that Bohemia's war wearyness would cripple them for a long time.
Still, in October 1430, he decided that enough was enough - he made peace. He needed both Venice and Spain to recover, since a war with Austria was getting likelier by the day.
Bohemia got a very good deal - but that didn't change the fact that they were weakened. All treaties were annuled, Silesia was released and they had to enter Venice's trade league.

Meanwhile Austria continued her campaign in Northern Italy. The Doge noticed their armies were splitted. And created a general, that would be useful in a war with Austria. He turned out to be "fair". Morocco left the trade league. Brandenburg declared war on Bohemia! The Papal State annected Siena.
And on 17th January 1431, what we expected - and feared - happened. Milan ceded Brescia and Cremona to Austria. To fulfill our mission, a war with Austria became inevitable. It was not a matter of whether there was going to be a war with Austria - it was a matter of when.

Funnily, Lienz (reconquest) and Brescia (conquest) were two differents casus belli. We would have to fight Austria TWICE !
Castille would not join in this war yet. Our manpower pool was also low, so waiting was a good policy. A surprise attack from Austria was unlikely, because they still had military access.
Meanwhile, in April 1431, we were called to arms from Naples, which was in our sphere of influence. The Pope was attacking him. We decided to join the war since we could make the Pope release Siena and Urbino, if victorious. We requested then military access through Ferrara.

We spotted the Pope's fleet but we could not catch it. We declared war on May 1431 and marched into the Pope's territory. At last we engaged the Pope's fleet while we lay siege to Ancona, Romagna and Rome and Epirus sieged Athens. Luckily, we were the alliance's leader.

The battle in the Gulf of Taranto was won then we hurried to help Naples's fleet which was fighting Sicily's, who was also in the Pope's coalition.

The sea battle was won in July 1431 while we were fighting with attrition in Central Italy

Naxos's fleet intercepted the demoralized Papal and Sicilian fleet in the Aegean sea in August 1431. With our help, Naxos got some free ships.

Meanwhile Castilla was very Likely to fight with us against Austria. The AntiPope coalition was actually quite big.

Meanwhile our allies owned Greece.

In November 1431, Romagna fell to Ferrara.
Sicilia was whitepeaced. Epirus was sued for peace and had to release Morea and join our league.

On the 7th of February 1432, Morea was reborn. They were occupying Achea, Morea proper belonged to Byzantium.
In March 1432, Siena, Roma and Romagna fell.

We sued the Pope for peace and made him release Siena and Urbino, and join the Venice trade league.

So on the 25h of March 1432, Urbino and Siena became independent and Venice's allies.
