There was that little glitch in Victoria wich is still in HoI III (from what i saw in the demo) : in statistics pages (especially those on military units), "alphabetical" order wasn't right. 10th, 11th, 12th were before 1st and 2nd, 3rd... In the second or third place of the unit's name, numbers came before letters wich is good for the first place but should not be for other places. I don't know if it is as easy to fix as it seems (just putting numbers after letters in the alpabetical order), but i'll be glad if it's changed in Vicky 2.

While I agree with you that reversing the order would be more usable, your statement - that the way it is now was incorrect - is false. Special characters are shown before regular letters, so "11th" will always come before "1st" in proper alphabetical order. :)

Actually, I think the order was 1st, 10th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ... The "problem" is, the list is sorted by the first character, and "disambiguated by the following ones. And 1 comes before 2, even if the 1 is the start of 10. It's a rather common problem with sorting, and not as easy to fix as it could be.

You could work around it by slapping a 0 in front of the single digit numbers: 01st, 02nd, (...), 10th, 11th... The problem then reoccurs when you breach 100, so it's not exactly a perfect solution.

No, the order is 10th, 11th [...] 19th, 1st... (i've just checked in Vic1)

Numbers are before letters. Adding "0" or "00" before units number work indeed, but i think "02nd Regiment" is quite a ugly. If numbers were put after letters, it would be solved.

It seems that the unit names are stored as Strings, so the numbers at the beginning are not recognized as integers. Hence the alphabetical anomalies (for humans).

That doesn't really complicate anything. This sort of thing would be a programming problem given to beginners.

Out of curiosity, which language are Paradox games written in?

On the subject of (especially unit) names, can we have the default unit sames make more sense? I'm tired of the "44th Inf. Regulars" or the "82nd Irr. Regulars" (what's an irregular regular?). I'd prefer to see default names like 1st Infantry and 1st Dragoons instead of their predecessors. Better yet would be default unit names that continue the countries' initial OOB. It's distracting as hell fighting in China and being attacked by the 6th Corps, consisting of the XIII WHITE BANNER and 44th Irr Regulars regiments/divisions. Better still would be (newly constructed) regiments whose names reflect their province of origin: the 3rd Newfoundland Regiment and the 44th Pennsylvania Regiment and such and such.

It would also be nice to see default ship names that incorporate province, state and leader names, a la EU3.
