Love the first contact system, enjoy the espionage system (haven't used it much, friends have really enjoyed the combination of criminal syndicate and espionage now though), enjoy the pop growth bonuses on developed or avaliable planets, LOATHE the empire growth penalty (makes habitats redundant outside of 'pop growth farms' that auto-resettle that you constantly need to build MORE of to fight against the increasing penalty... Rather than a way to continue exploitation of resources after your planets have tapped out).

Feels like its doubling down on the mistake of Beauracrats as it makes any distinction between 'tall' or 'wide' increasingly meaningless and continues to make the most effective strategy to 'blob as hard as you can without being shut down'.

Your friends love criminal syndicate? How? Are they aware crime branch offices are completely broken? (They make negative money)

Yes, he had that bug from smaller frontier worlds, but was still making money off of developed worlds (like the capitals of other players), allowing him to make a lot of money that he then invested into operations to exploit his espionage bonuses. Irrc, the issue is related to the criminal job reducing those planet's trade value to negatives (and a percentage of a negative is, well, a negative...).

Zero-content ripoff DLC. Spies that do basically nothing and a really lame 'become the crisis' ap. Looks like a bunch of summer workers cobbled it together to be honest. Maybe worth 2€ for the one lol game of spamming crisis potatoships and that's it, but 20€ is just a way of saying "we don't really value you as a customer". Okay, no problem. There's no shortage of game studios these days.

Have you actually used the spy system?

Sure, it's a bit of an active system, but they're one of the main ways to get intel on the other empires, and I've been quite merrily stealing tech from neighbours with the spy actions.
I've also done a couple of sabotage attempts, but they're not as much of interest to me.

There's also a lot more going on than just those two things. The custodian/empire thing is at least an interesting concept - how well it performs is something I'll need to see when I've had time to fully interact with it.

But hey, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

@DreadLindwyrm

I for one was having fun recruiting assets and using them to help me extort favors from others empires so that I could force them to support my measures if they would not be normally willing to trade favors with me.... or even if they would be willing, so that I wouldn't have to pay them, even if it meant waiting longer to accumulate those favors. The energy was a pittance compared to the cost of buying favors normally later in the game. Or at least, it felt that way.

Tiny QoL request: when you learn of a new species (in the "we've made first contact and called the species the Xi Aliens" pop-up window), there should be an additional button that assigns an available envoy to study that species, without you needing to open that window and do it yourself. Since all envoys are identical, there's no reason for the game not to simply pick one for you.

Also, for god's sake, do something about pop-up windows appearing full-size smack in the middle of the screen, and in front of whatever else is on-screen, without me getting to click-and-drag them out ofthe way since you can't move them so that they're partly off-screen. They're so frequent now that it's unbelievably annoying when playing at high speed.

Disregarding the pop discussion:

-Very much appreciate the first contact system. Juggling research projects for this in the past was annoying and way too often I lost the chance to actually "know" what the space creatures were, ending up with them still being "?" even in the 2400s.
-Not being able to see the full size of another empire on first contact adds a nice bit of intrigue to figuring out how and where to expand.
-Already knowing if there is a habitable planet within one jump of your home system is very appreciated, especially for my favorite Origin (Doomsday).
-Speaking of which, resettling pops off your homeworld with a Doomsday origin still has an influence cost. While you can halve it with Evacuation Protocols or avoid it by relying on unemployed migration, I think this needs addressed as it'll make clearing out the last stragglers more difficult and expensive.
