East Asian Army General Staff HQ, Canton

- This is madness, things used to be running much smoother not too long ago!

- This is AOG, Feldmarschal.

- Don't lecture me on what this is, Wulf!

Teufel was in very bad mood. He was just back from Board meeting and ever-present making of compromises with Triads was tiring him.

- Forgive me, Sir.

- Forget it, it's not your fault. I wish those people would be aware how fragile is the order which we have achieved with so many sacrafices. The burden I am bearing is so heavy...yet I am surrounded by fools who can't see anything beyond the tips of their money-sniffing noses!

- I don't think it's only the scent of money that attracts them though...that white stuff they like to put into banknotes has probably a big role in their thoughts as well.

- Don't tell me about it, I hear they are even rewarding their troops with various psychedelic herbs and powders on top of their wage. Sign up for Tigress Guard, stay forever for the pleasures. And the money they make with export! They are overflowing Europe, if only we could get our hands on some of those networks, there'd be so much dough to be made. Money, money, money! They have it all and we don't. This must change.

- They are playing beggar thy neighbour game on expense of Metropolis. Is this wise? I don't mind them corrupting Japan, Russia or North America, but the Kaiserreich?

- Don't be a fool, Wulf. German Empire won't collapse because few more people are getting high in Kiel or Dortmund. We need more strength to wrestle some of control back from Triads.

- We surely do. But what is that made you so angry before? Is it connected with ongoing union strikes?

- Indeed. But fortunately, I managed to push trough relatively acceptable solution. Triads wanted to smash some heads as usual. But far too many for desired effect. We can't afford mass of more or less qualified workforce to be thrown out of our well-oiled industrial machine in the middle of crucial recovery proces. We don't lack general manpower, but we can't afford constant replacement of good men behind machines or barracks' walls doing their current work just fine with inexperienced greenhorns. And in the end, even our quite impressive reserve pool of workforce would break at some point, should we risk everyone just trying to flee to places like Qing Empire, or just revolt. We couldn't survive another civil war. At least not at this point.

- Wise thinking, Sir.

strike1_zpsnh8nhqqr.png

- Thus, I have managed to convince our dear friends at Board of Directors, most of them are now fine gentlemen from Hong Kong and other former free coastal cities, to accept my reasonable middle ground proposal. According to that, a small bribe with amnesty was arranged for illegal strikers who return to work. As predicted, majority is already falling for the carrot. As for the rest, I left them to the heavy stick of security forces. This will both make an example of them, and also satisfy the bloodlust of our partners. I wouldn't be in the shoes of stubborn strike leaders and other fools who followed them and still fail to see what is good for them. I had to give free hands to Leang's Guards who will issue the punishments on their own discretion. Troublemakers will be dealt as enemies of the state disrupting public harmony and such charges don't need court hearings or anything. They'll pray the Police would have them in the custody instead, but they already made their choice by rejecting our deal. It's not that I'm sorry for them, but neither I'm too interested in punishing them myself. My hands are clean and it's good to have some scapegoats for Lao Ce and company to show off with their strength in society.

strike2_zpsydg7hiyz.png

But that small rise for overburdened workforce wasn't everything Teufel had to drag out from jaws of the Board in spite being the formal head of demanding Directors. Every bigger investment that wasn't business-as-usual moneygrubbing had to be pushed trough series of harsh negotiations, heated arguments, promises about hefty profits and Machiavellian horse-trading. Everything for best interests of AOG.

strike3_zpsrf9kjhsz.png

If not President-General and his will of iron, Board wouldn't even attempt to launch any relevant industrial modernization projects until things would start falling apart.

ScreenSave7_zpsk2fzhfng.png

- Your turn, Wulf. - declared the President-General. How is military development going on? Is it possible to do anything with that modest defense budget I'm getting from that pesky Board?

- Sir, I'm happy to present you situation in our military. Of course Guard Corps will be left out because they get direct funding from the Board...

- Yes, I know that. As soon as I secure more money I'll also start paying Presidential Guard on my own. I trust those men but I don't want the smell of foreign money luring their loyalty away from me. But we must do everything not to have East Asian Army fall behind the general forces of Triad-controlled Garde. Just look at what are they doing to foreign expeditionary forces. They are not only hiring at large home and abroad, but are also depleting allied foreign formations with loose restrictions of their staff. Saigon doesen't want trouble with monsters of Golden Triangle and is tolerating those defections. Fortunately we have professional army and our cadres are bound to its formations, if we had purely contracted force we'd run out of men by now.

viet_zps24kh8xee.png

- Indeed Sir, that's why we initiated new system that the crude concept you already improved in advance.

- And now I'll see the results.

- Indeed. As you already know, professional service in our army is still attracting enough job-seeking men in spite of Garde recruitment spree, for now. But it's true we're getting mostly leftovers who are still willing to serve in regular army in spite of being rejected by Garde. That's what we crafted a stimulation program to fix this. We could still initiate regular draft, but this wouldn't be too politically wise...

- Trully.

- We are deploying more troops at respectable pace, but not good enough concerning our rearmament plans. From what we are getting both out of manpower pool and armaments industry paired with purchases and donations, it's just enough to combine men and material into few regular units that are slowly increasing size of our army. If there wouldn't be Guard Corps, there'd be more men and material to spare for our needs.

- But they are here and we can't help it.

- The types we need the most are those of biggest utility in boudaries of our technical capacities. Apart from main battle tank forces in form of spearheads consisted of upgraded Leopard 1 models, the power of our mass formations lies in combination of motorized infantry and Spähpanzers that provide light armor support. In current situation, we can't even dream of large fully mechanized formations. We can't even issue mass deployment of existing types.

ScreenSave12_zpsoj0grxpm.png

ScreenSave27_zpsjopv2osy.png

ScreenSave29_zpscy6b5lzy.png

ScreenSave30_zpsayijrh3y.png

- And you have good plan to fill those holes, right?

- I think so. I have constructed financial program that would stimulate interest for army career without need of issuing forceful draft.

- If it's about throwing more money at problem, this won't work for me.

- Totally opposite in fact. We would do it by imposing a special tax on all constituents under AOG jurisdiction. It should be large enough to make people interested in getting rid of it, but not too large to remain dead word on paper, cause ruin of entire families or even ignite revolt. Those who fear military life will muster resources to avoid it and provide us with more funds that will flow directly into own fund of East Asia Army. On the other hand, this will cut options for those lured by Garde prizes. You won't even have to push this trough Board as our army is entitled to collect resources from population in both home districts and areas of operations to provide undisrupted defence services. District commander for his area, or supreme command for jurisdiction of entire force, can issue general financial obligation with an order that includes justification from field of defence. If anyone will take an appeal against our justification, be it even all the way to Berlin, what can the Board do? Admit they are leeching away funds, arms and manpower that should rather serve the forces of which the Kaiser is supreme commander? And this path still looks better than just confiscating property from random ''enemies of the state'' what Guards enjoy to do so much.

- Damn your crazy head, this might even work! This looks nice, what's next?

- We'll have to put all this extra manpower to use. Funds will only start to trickle to our own army budget and it won't be really something big in first months, so we better stay modest and stock up something for the future. For the surplus of manpower we'll soon have I envisioned creation of light infantry formations that won't be too demanding in material. They will receive basic infantry armament with some special additions and will be transported on light trucks and terrain vehicles as we can't spare any more heavy trucks and armored personel carriers that regular motorized infantry is already using. This will make them soft targets on the road but when reaching their destination, they would be useful for many tasks. Garrisoning urban areas, performing anti-partisan duties, digging in fortified positions, supporting heavy units in fight and storming places where armor fears to thread. Those semi-shock troops would not be real special forces, but still specialized enough to fill the gaps in complex warfare we're facing those days. I'd suggest organized them in Assault Brigades altough they would be fast to dig in and hold the line when needed, or patrol the lands to protect safety in tense peacetime when terror threats need more attention.

- Perfect. Nice all-purpose formation to close the gaps in our lines. And when we'll have enough of that canon fodder, I mean light troops, can we spare some of those to form some new formation? I could use some Grenztruppen as well to take back control of our borders from Triads. Or at least to force them into giving us some concessions.

- I think all this can be arranged, Sir.

ScreenSave21_zpsz5dw98ph.png

.........

ScreenSave17_zpslve2ymbi.png

Wulf's ideas were put into motion more or less according to plan. While the existing formations were continued to be expanded, large gaps in classic formations were being filled by entire brigades of light infantry which made units they were reinforcing more adapted to combat challenges by providing tactical support which used to be lacking before.

ScreenSave16_zpssurbuedp.png

Part of new light infantry formations was even separated from infantry brigades of Assault Troops (also known under name Sturmtruppen) and assembled as new Border Troops of AOG units (Grenztruppen) that were supposed to provide military control over the border. They were especially active at border with Qing Empire, especially in coastal provinces where paths from ex-Legationist enclave of Shanghai were running trough. This didn't fully eliminate Triad-dominated Guards border patrols and their corruptive influence over civil customs services, however it did force Triads into giving a cut of their profits to Teufel's treasury.
ScreenSave9_zpsolvb3jrt.png

Borders with Qing Empire were lightly defended as no real rogue actions could be expected from tightly Tokyo-supervised Beijing goverment except from some propaganda actions and trade issues, and border guards from regular army, Guard Corps, AOG custom services and law enforcement agencies were sufficient to oversee all activity in the area. In case of bigger trouble, more reinforcements could be quickly deployed from both coastal areas and Western borders. The story was much more diffrent on the border with Republic of China which was suspected of covert support for violent anti-AOG resistance in South China. While no bigger revolts were result of this aid and unlawful activity of underground resistance groups which mostly advocated various republican agendas, their deeds were still troubling AOG authorities. Several assassinations of official figures and multiple bomb detonations were biggest security challenges for now, but this could change fast and AOG defence forces were mostly amassed on Western borders where arms-smuggling routes together with cross-border saboteur teams were suspected to be running from Yunnan into German China.
ScreenSave10_zpsspzxiirj.png

Increasing number of security forces also allowed AOG to give more attention to insular possessions in Pacific what made Berlin a bit more happier as well. Several garrisons were deployed in overseas areas in order to send a warning both to ambitious external forces and potential local factors of instability. Duty in more pleasant parts of those territories was considered a dream job by many grunts altough it wasn't a big surprise if harsh reality of continental AOG was only switched for tyranny of insular commanders who could afford more autonomy to pursue their own ways due to lack of control from distant Canton which couldn't hide everything from eyes of Metropolis that often forgot on more distant parts.
ScreenSave8_zpsaupuvacg.png

Note: Those assault troops are actually garrison units but I slightly overhauled their look and meaning for AOG as this version of MDS for DH I'm using for this story made garrison brigades mobile, so I thought I might enlarge their tasks because of that.

While it's an unusual premise, I'm still loving this all of this grey-area, semi-legal wheeling and dealing from the player's country. Anyway, I think you'll be able to deal with the ROC without much trouble (apart from the terrain of course), but Berlin will not be pleased at all by Teufel and/or the Tigress carving out an empire in the interior of China. To say nothing of the Qing and Japan.

All of that Cannon Fodder will be useful when the time comes to take on the RoC. I am sure a war with them is imminent, as I wonder why you would need over 100 divisions/brigades to merely secure the border. :D

I love the disjointed, ramshackle way the AoG is running, you just get this odd feeling the government is some weird entity stitched together from disparate parts and held together by...well no one really knows. It's literally some random dudes managed to take control of a country, except this country is one of the most populous on Earth. It's like Dogs of War, except the people who got in charge got a giant state, and are (sort of) backed up by a master power.

@der Kriegsherr Thank you, I'm happy to hear you're enjoying more shady background of this story, the idea is that this kind of AOG runs like complex conglomerate, it already was a complicated structure in start but after the ''hostile takeover'' things got even more messed up.

@Bergioyn It's very fragile situation indeed...

@Kaiser_Mobius Border security is serious issue, stop spoiling the situation!

@IconOfEvi That's probably best depiction of situation in this story by now. Kudos for such accurate observation, it's really impressive!

Thanks for comments, everyone!

July 19, 2007

War games that were launched in Western border area were presented as deterrent against foreign threats and show of force towards the criminal elements at home. Border with Republic of China which presented bigger challenge to AOG stability with its Syndicalist-supported populist republican regime than any other neighbour was one of most fortified in the world. Thus it was no surprise that in July another large military excercises of East Asian Army and Guard Corps were scheduled.

wargames_zpstcbatinz.png

As usually, the war games in such place were greeted by harsh responses from the Western side of the fence. National Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China staged immediate maneuvers of slightly smaller scale with own units that were as usually on standby in sectors facing happenings on AOG side.

wg2_zps7nx6j1ba.png

Altough such tense situations were repeating in almost routine way, circumstances of this day finally reached the point of perfection that President-General has envisioned. Soviet Republic and Japan were at each other's throats after minor fishing incident for days now but in the morning their gunboats were already mutually violating the designated spheres of exclusive maritime zones, continuing with further harrasment economic activity in those waters and causing panic among trawlers and other non-military vessels. It didn't take long for Mitsubishi and Sukhoi fighters to make an appearance and engage in phony tactical manoeuvring, showing-off with simulated dogfight moves and performing all kinds of other provocative actions. Still, it was a matter of not to be the one to lose face first, so Tokyo and Moscow took this relatively small crisis in most serious manner possible.

ScreenSave5_zpsr92veuvj.png

Things could just not get any better as Canada woke up with news of massive anti-terrorist raid in Quebec. Maurice Hoth, the notorious leader of Quebecois underground Left-Wing resistance responsible for many heinous crimes, was busted in one of safe houses used by his organization. However, in spite of sense of victory, the state of emergency was declared all over the country as well-expanded network of pro-separatist sleeper cells was expected to be ready for possible retaliation. For years the actions of violent Quebecois separatists were limited to Quebec province no more and several attacks on vital interests of Canadian state and society were launched in very diffrent parts of country already. Just few months ago there was failed attempt on life of the chief of general staff of Canadian armed forces General Mobius at his home residence in Manitoba when the well-guarded mansion of Sir Mobius was badly damaged by explosion and subsequent fire. Bold attack with rocket-propelled grenade launched against the structure has shocked Canadian security establishment with clear message that even highest figures can not feel safe from separatist vengeance.

ScreenSave6_zpsxzsb2qu8.png

This day, things turned out to be much more diffrent from usual business. Lone projectiles or a small hail of shells were making occasional visits during heated situations on the border, usually causing only minor damage and casulties. However, this time a fortified Republican missile reportedly came under focused fire from AOG side and RoC units on guard returned the fire against suspected artillery positions of AOG forces. At least that's what NRA has announced as retaliatory reason. AOG authorities denied the accusations and continued ''suppressive fire'' from Republican artillery was soon declared as act of aggression. AOG security forces were authorized to neutralize all threats coming from the Western side of the border.

war_zpsxjgtrbuv.png

The skirmishes along the entire border quickly turned into limited incursions with ''search and destroy'' missions performed by Guards special forces targeting nearby enemy positions that couldn't be suppressed by artillery and air strikes. Not too discreet ''covert ops'' were quickly perceived as enemy boots on the ground and Republic declared the state of war with what they dubbed as ''rogue criminal corporation'', announcing they do not consider Mitteleuropa as hostile party in this war and requesting open Syndicalist support in case of local conflict turning into war of larger international scale. Those calls actually triggered international consequences as Mitteleuropa really offered only logistical support to AOG but in return the Syndicalist response remained limited to covert support for Republic which was not tied to Internationale with any binding agreements except loose political and economic treaties, and lots of silent support for leftist bourgeoise republic that was never considered as real socialist entity but was rather seen as ''free nation in development'' that will evolve to real socialism trough the means of national liberation and social revolution in time.

DPRK_MiG-29.jpg

Republican MIG-29 fighters violated AOG airspace in first hours of open conflict.

The silent diplomatic trading based on concludent actions of interested superpowers made Republic of China even braver and declaration that came from its Presidency promised the rough start: Kunming has declared that AOG has now finally lost even those few remaints of right to exist that it still possessed as illegitimate oppressive entity by crossing the red line, and called the people of South China to rise and overthrow the corporate tyranny on wings of Republican arms. In unexpected move, several Republican air squadrons broke into AOG airspace trough scarcely protected sectors and struck number of relatively relevant positions deep in interior. The damage was light by symbolic as it was done by swift attack to which air defense forces were slow to respond due to focusing on major hot spots and home targets of biggest value. Attack was meant to send a signal to local insurgency that it is time for fith column to rise and allow Republican forces easier pass into AOG, but this train has passed as most of serious insurgent cells were neutralized by unforgiving security aparatus that excercised most efficient methods of oppressive state policing and street-wise Triad brutality. Lack of any real internal and external cards for both sides to play now meant only one thing: This war is to be decided on the battlefield only. Republican call for destruction of AOG did not go ignored as President-General Teufel declared that Republic itself now presents the threat to very existance of General East Asian Company. This was now fight for survival of both sides as aims of both were the same: Elimination of opposing party as a whole.

flak_zpspfmnbc9i.png
AOG air defense forces in interior provinces were caught by surprise with deep initial incursion of several NRA air squadrons. However, the effect of few enemy air strikes was mostly moral one as RoC goverment hoped to ignite pro-Republican revolt in South China by a show of force. However, few bands of local enthusiaists who stormed some smaller provincial administrative buildings waving Republican flags and rattling with more or less dangerous objects were quickly dispersed. Most of serious sleeper cells of republican resistance were already neutralized by brutally efficient activity of AOG security aparatus, knocking the option of synchronized revolt out of the hands of RoC. Altough the chance of massive spontanous revolt remained, it was decreased by declaration of state of emergency and martial law. However, curbed general dissent was not only the result of increased oppression as the conflict itself actually provided helpful effect of people rallying around the flag.

Probably shouldn't have a mansion so close to a hive of scum and villainy.

You mean Manitoba? :D

Haha, my home province may not be the best of places, but its far from being as downtrodden as Mos Eisley. (unless you venture into the shady parts of Winnipeg I guess.....)

Well...that escalated quickly!

They were an eyesore anyways. But the thing is this may not be so even a fight. AoG has an army yes, but it's not nearly the size it should be for such a state, and it's only recently been able to acquire more modern weapon systems, whereas the RoC has had them this whole time. Very interesting war. Hopefully the Qing don't interfere, but I doubt it.

@Razgriz 2K9 Haha, that conversation with Kaiser_Mobius about Manitoba being hive of scum and villainy really made me laugh. I didn't really mean to depict this province as giant hideout of Quebecois separatists. :D

@der Kriegsherr For some reason I always mistake your for

@IconOfEvi AOG did a lot of hard work in recent years while RoC isn't all state-of-the-art equiped, it's strong regional power with large army that is used by Syndicalist godfathers like Soviet Republic and India as dumping space for all that surplus armament, so a lot of 1960s stuff is being donated in exchange for access to natural resources. As for Qing Empire, you're making pretty good point here, it will be revealed in upcoming update already.

Thanks for comments, everyone!

Beijing, July 19, 2007
Imperial General Headquarters

- Those German puppets have gone crazy. Looks like a real war has begun now. Emperor hoped we'll never come to this, but the AOG decided to wreck the very essence of fragile regional harmony.

- Yes, Minister. Shall we wait for His Majesty to attend the war room meeting?

- No need for that, General. He's getting briefed about everything without delay. It's serious situation but his leg injury got worse.

- May the Heaven grant him fast recovery. He is a good rider, but couldn't do anything about his horse collapsing and dying on spot. Seems like a bad omen. And now this war...

- Be it so or not, we're not the ones that disrupted the balance.

- True words. I had put the Imperial Army and its Air Service on state of highest readiness. A word from Supreme Commander and everything will be put into motion. Will be His Majesty able to provide the orders if the need arises?

- I will. - The Emperor walked into room with slow but dignified step, using the elegant stick to relieve weight pressure from the wounded leg. - I've seen enough, Gentlemen. Just do what needs to be done if we don't want to see AOG bordering Mongolia.

Qing Empire activated its reserve plans and triggered Co-Prosperity Sphere intervention against Republican China moments after escalation between Company and RoC.

Mitsubishi_F-2.jpg
Ki-140 Mitsubishi Type 6 strike fighter of Imperial Japanese Army Air Service is being prepared to take off from airfield in Northern China to provide additional air support for Qing imperial forces in their offensive against the Republic of China. For diffrence from Berlin Pact which offered only logistical support for Allgemeine Ostasiatische Gesellschaft, the East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere showed some more solidarity with its ally in Beijing the firepower of which was already more than abundant for operation that imperial goverment has pushed for. While Japan provided air support from its airbases in China, Thailand even opened new front against the Republic on Southern border, challenging AOG and its faithful allies in Indochina to race trough challenging borderland terrain.

ScreenSave2_zpsjb422gig.png
Qing intervention infuriated President-General Teufel as Emperor and his Japanese allies moved in to grab a piece of cake for themselves, but many field commanders praised the gods, heavens and spirits of ancestors for persuading the self-styled Son of Heaven in Beijing into moving against the countless Republican armies. Many elite divisions who would move South to counter AOG forces were thus tied in Northern theatre. In spite of that, National Revolutionary Army still managed to make dangerous pushes against weaker AOG positions in attempt to disrupt the general offensive.

ScreenSave4_zpsngodkvxg.png

Mutual offensive operations that were result of constant pre-war preparations for such situation turned the overral frontline into bloody mess.

ScreenSave3_zps66tvtwzn.png
In some sectors, light infantry-dominated, rapidly-deployed assault units of East Asian Army encountered entire brigades of Republican shock troops what caused the carnage rarely seen since the days of massive infantry assaults during Weltkrieg.

ScreenSave0_zpso2dx32xa.png

Fortunately, SuperHinds of army aviation corps provided great help in prevention of such scenes in their operational zones.

ScreenSave7_zpshvxub3i6.png
Since Imperial Chinese Army Aviation Service with good ammount of help from its Japanese counterpart established air superiority over Republican territories practically on day one of intervention, the combat wings of East Asia Army Air Defense Forces were mostly left with tasks of air support for ground units that were surely in real need of it.

ScreenSave8_zpslz6c0zbs.png
While Republican shock troopers lacked no courage and devotion in their fight, Teufel's ''cannon fodder'' that was expected to show similar qualities ended up with completely opposite performance. Army of people who were forced into military service trough economic pressure mostly had no higher interests but to relieve themselves and their loved ones from cruel taxation and leave enough food on tables for all concerned to survive trough month. Additional Feldjägers and Guards, including most feared ones with Triad background, had to be deployed to oversee performance of those light infantry units and employ harsh measures against those showing lack of morale and discipline.

ScreenSave9_zpsc0lhfgtc.png

Combat units of Guard Corps had no such problems altough Garde did not really have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for cadres, resources and equipment.

ScreenSave10_zps578yclmc.png
The greatest hope of regular army remained its aviation corps. This deadly mix of devastating heavy SuperHind gunships and German-made utility helicopters that sported good transport capacity combined with decent fire support proved to be a wonderful choice. Advanced countermeasures recently introduced by South African inovators greatly decreased risks from hostile actions what made respectable mixed crews of elite native graduates and experienced foreigners even more courageous. Their adventurous tactics were booming friendly morale and devastating enemy collective thoughts together with entire units.

ScreenSave11_zpsikqhedmh.png
Apart from excellent performance of flying tanks and air cavalry, expected brutal efficiency of privileged Guard Corps, decent work of professional regular troops and much worse results of their hastly-trained substitutes, the role of foreign expeditionary forces from Ceylon and Indochina proved to be more than welcome. Especially Indochina which fully devoted itself to this war actually entered into open hostilities with Republic of China by attacking Republican positions from own territory as well, thus de facto entering the state of war with Kunming. Rivals from Siam were already making gains against the RoC and Saigon had no desire to watch this as pasive observer, no matter on complains from Berlin that was constantly urging for moderate approach in wish to prevent further international escalation.

Oh shit...I suppose that remains to be fixed next time after this conflict is over. The general infantry's morale and discipline is too lacking. Maybe divert some of those profits from the corporation to actually providing signing incentives? :p

Whew! That was close! I almost expected the Qing to declare war on you for this provocation!
With that said, the ROC forces are performing decently in spite of their numerical disadvantages; what gives?
