In 2035, an experiment conducted in a Korean probe ship goes terribly, terribly wrong. The result is a spectacular explosion which, when mistaken for a long-awaited attack by China, causes a nuclear war. The explosion, oddly, was a hundred miles from the ship - which disappeared altogether, to God knows where.

Or, as it would turn out, when.

...

In December 1835, a firestorm was observed to rain down on a remote section of the Amazon. A statue in Bremen exploded, and a flaming strip of debris bearing a Hangul character streaked into and destroyed a barn in Illinois. A group of natives in Kenya found a man buried from the waist up in an otherwise smooth and imperforate rock face. A lone body rose to the surface of the cold sea beyond the Antarctic circle, and floated there for some time. The first and only human being destined to do so entered the atmosphere of Venus.

A man floated to the surface of a river in what would some day be Laos. He coughed once, hard, and swam to the nearest shore - where he would find, rather than a Siamese governor who had of late taken to killing travellers for sport, a Laotian nobleman who could read just enough Chinese...

Before you could say 'insurrection' - well, after almost a full year, but who's counting - the Baron of Maekhaum had been overthrown by a warlord bearing strange and terrifying new weapons. Upon equipping a sizeable army with such bizzare novelties as single-action rifles and flamethrowers - modified from commodities bought from a British trader who lucked by with plenty of kerosene and muskets - the warlord, and his closest advisor, a foreigner communicating only in written Chinese, marched southward into Cambodia.

Who is it that got blasted to the past, a korean or a chinese?

A Korean who, by happy (for him, anyway) coincidence, happened to speak a language which a local nobleman might be educated in.

Always fun to see an uncivilised nation in play. Interesting background too.

Thanks for the feedback, guys - I'm going to see about a third update tonight.

...and then did a U-turn...

...and attacked the Vietnamese Army at the imperial capital. After a shuffling war of maneuver, Vietnam, Cambodia's puppetmaster and client state, was beaten into submission.

04-submission.PNG

In addition to being forced to pay a hefty tribute to the warlord at Maekhaum, the king of Vietnam was also forced to recognize the legitimacy of his claims to governance over Cambodia.

There was a problem. While Luang Prabang had gained a port and vital access to the sea, its capital was now notably landlocked, and the King did not have to recognize the legitimacy of the Baronet Maekhaum's conquests, or even his newly gained position. He and his Korean aide would have to find another neighbor for them to beat up.

Thankfully, Luang Prabang wasn't anywhere close to running out of neighbors... yet.

The most interesting of AARs yet. Keep coming.
:eek:o Why, I don't know if I can live up to that, but I'll take my best shot on it...

Why didn't you take more of Annam? Those indemnities must be pathetic.
Luang Prabang is an unciv comprising two dirt-poor provinces, one of which has just been removed from the trade network thanks to access to the sea. (Fun fact: landlocked countries don't need convoys, countries with ports - anywhere - do. So getting Cambodia knocked Maekhaum out of the running, which made me a little angry.) Vietnam has a monthly income of roughly 400£, give or take a few dozen. That translates to double my monthly income if I pared every expense down to the bone, which I don't want to do, or rough solvency if I spend generously. For three years, I'm set. Plus, Vietnam is worth more prestige this way when their five free years run out...

Oh, now this is going to be interesting, did you give yourself some free technologies?
The whole tree, my good man. No inventions, though, and uncivs don't get them very quick either. Grumble - I can technically build barrel factories, but not lumber or cement. :p

Wow, that's a pretty decent increase in size. Always good to read about vassals revolting against their masters. :)

And of course I don't wish you any specific harm... :p

On the plus side, the cavalry division which joined Luang Prabang's army just before the war were regulars, which allowed them to occupy land much more quickly than their native compatriots.

On the minus side, they cost an amount of funds which the Baronet Maekhaum could scarce afford, even with relatively low defense spending. The government faced something of a financial crisis.

Meanwhile, the Siamese put up a predictably brave, noble, and futile fight.

08-peace1840.PNG

The Maekhaum government let them off easy - the war was explicitly for a land corridor to the capital, although a few opium-producing provinces only sweetened the deal.

09-peace1844.PNG

After a few years of recovery from debts incurred during the invasion of Siam, Luang Prabang built up three more squadrons of super-weapon wielders and assaulted Burma, with obvious results.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Southeast Asia, time had run out...
