Bayezid II, The Sword of the Prophet

898 A.H. (1493AD)

Now with Hungary taken I have to say I feel overconfident. There is no limit to Allah's power but alas there is a limit to my planning ability. As i gaze intently at the maps our cartographers provided me, I have to say I do not know what the next step should be.
Orthodox Georgia seems to be an easy target but the Persian presence near our borders unerves me. Also those Shiite dogs to the South could act at any time. To cap it off our main forces linger near the border of Austria and I do not exclude the posibility of Moldova and Wallachia stabing us in the back. The Christian world seems apathic enough but I am no fool. Those fickle infidels can strike us at any time.

Allah be praised! My indecision is ended. Last night, archangel Gabriel came to me in a vision and ordered me to strike at the fowl Austrians. I have had a vision of myself riding triumphant in Vienna and so it will be.
33 thousand Austrian troops lie over the border in Presburg and Sinan is within striking distance but he is outnumbered. We shall build our forces and when we outnumber the infidels Austria will be ours.

In April we enter another royal union this time with Cyrenaica. The girl is just another harem ornament. As I am displeased with my son Mustapha I send him to marry a princes of Kazan. May he freeze in the Norhthern stepes.

899 A.H. (1494AD)
26 Jumaada al-awal (March 5) - The time has come for war. 60 thousand troops under Sinan Pasha and Fahrid Bey march on Presburg, while 23 thousand under Menderes march into Carniola. A third force of 21 thousand under general Tuz are sent into Odeburg. I am trying to capitalize on this new concept I hold, that of a direct decisive offensive with speed being essential to succes. I have toyed with the concept and decided to call it 'lightning-war' in the honor of Bayezid I Ildyrim(Lightning). My namesake would be proud.

Sinan and Fahrid do not betray my faith as they smash the Austrian army completely. After succesfuly taking presburg 47 thousand warriors still remain under their command.

17 SHa`baan (may 23) - It appears I have woken the Christians out of their apathy. Poland declares war on us but it is of no consequence. It is all for show. They can not hope to acomplish much against Ottoman steel. The prophet is with us, let them do their worst.

22 SHa`baan (may 28) - Odeburg falls and Tuz is sent to take Viena. Austrian resistence is somewhere between a joke and non-existence. Is this all Christans can do to stop us?
9 RamaDHaan (june 13) - Ostmarch falls to Sinan's assaults and Carniola follows. Menderes is sent to Styria. Austrians are still on the run.

20 SHawwal (july 23) While the war is a major attention drain I do find time to enter a military alliance with Crimea. Allies are like sheep while we are the sheperd. Our flock will grow with time but one must remember the shepherd eats his sheep in the end.
11 Thw al-Hijjah (sept 11) Sinan takes Salzburg and on 17 Thw al-Hijjah (sept 17) Viena falls, and my dream is fulfilled as I triumphantly enter the city. As I watch my beloved Janisaries proclaim me the Sword of the Prophet, divine voices sing to me to the tune of victory. I immediately order general Tuz into Styria. I know he will be victorious, the voices assure me.
30 Thw al-Hijjah (sept 30) - A white peace with Polland proves to be inevitable as that war takes both of our nations nowhere. The Polish dogs return to their homeland with their tails between their legs.

18 Safar (november 17)- Tyrol falls. In a sudden access of mercy I decide to spare the surviving garison, just executing the nobles will do. As I go on watching noble head after noble head being separated from their bodies a Venetian diplomat arrives with a formal declaration of war. They quote my atrocities as a valid casus beli! The nerve! Surely executing those who oppose you by decapitation is an act of mercy not an atrocity. As rage consumes me I decide to have the garison executed anyway and send their heads to that coniving Doge to show him my humane treatment. Surely I have not impaled anyone yet, but I am of a mind to do that of this Venetian scum.

While Venice's declaration of war came as a shock, I do not find it troublesome, as I embrace the challenge. I send Sinan Pasha to Mantua in order to avenge the affront.

900 A.H. (1495AD)
It is only Raby` al-THaany (january) and reports of Sinan succesfuly storming Mantua have reached me. Pasha Mardin defeats a Venetian force in Croatia, as Sinan advances unchecked towards Venice. The fools will regret their insult and pay for it with their own blood. It is truly fortunate I am an enlightened ruler and will just stop at decapitating them. Bayezid I would have impaled the treacherous dogs.

24 Jumaada al-THaany (March 22) - Styria falls at last and Austria joins Hungary on the extinct nations list. Tuz is sent to Istria, while 14 thousand troops siege Iliria.

5 Rajab (april 1) - Ferdinand of Spain is proclaimed Holy Roman emperor. I can not stop laughing for soon there will be no Holy Roman Empire to speak of. I will make sure of that.
12 RamaDHaan (june 6) My Christian subjects in Presburg are revolting. That is what happens if you treat dogs too well, as you turn your back they will bite you. I will have to give an example here. Maybe impaling wasn't that bad of a way of dealing with troublesome Christians after all.

2 SHawwal (june 25) We take istria and I send Tuz to reinforce Sinan in Venice.

Thw al-Hijjah (September) comes and we score our first naval victory as a Venetian fleet is beaten in the Sea of Marmara. Maybe naval expeditions to Venetian controlled islands are a posibility.

7 MuHarram (sept 26) I can not believe it. I am ashen with fury. Persia declared war on us. I execute their ambassador as he thoroughly deserved it. The insolent dog! What is the Persian sultan thinking? As I wage righteous war on Christianity he decides to stab me in the back? As our Jihad progresses so well I have to contend with fellow Muslims trying to stop Allah's work? I swear on the Quran, I will have that bastard's head on a pike.
More salt is poured on the wound as news arrive of Venetians defeating our fleet near the Cyclades.

Raby` al-awal (dec) - A large Persian force lays siege to Trabzon, while we fight the Mamelukes in Sivas. Oh how the jackals try to murder the lion. But we shall prevail.

901 A.H. (1496AD)

30 Raby` al-THaany (jan 16) - Allah chooses to test his children. Those Moldavian dogs just declared war on us. Their insolence is beyond comprehension! I will have Suceava in ruin if it's the last thing that I do.

Jumaada al-THaany (March) - As I just receive news of our succesful occupation of Iliria, an eunuch enters bringing tidings of our fleet's defeat near Morea. I immediately issue an order to have the amiral's head brought on a plate, but alas the dog had the fortune to die in battle. The sheer insolence of the man! To think that incompetent is now feasting in the prophet's halls!

We succesfuly take Kudistan and Trabzon is still holding. Unfortunately the Persians still outnumber us in this area and I have no choice but to seek peace with Venice in order to increase our presence here and maybe relieve Trabzon.

6 Rajab (march 21)- our dreams of utterly destroying the Venetians lie in ruins as I am forced to sign a peace agreement. Although we get Istria, Iliria and Mantua I am far from happy. This is the first time I find myself in a stalemate and potential disaster looms on the Eastern front.

The Persian dogs continue to vent their anger upon Trabzon while Ibrahim defeats several smaller forces. Moldovians waste their breath sieging Ruthenia and I have to laugh at their incompetence. I am amazed their prince hasn't executed the incompetent generals yet. Weakneess breeds weakness. If a ruler tolerates it his country inevitably ends up a province of someone who has the ability to stamp it.

Thw al-Qi`dah (August) - Our heroic defenders still hold Trabzon, and although i have over 50 thousand troops in the area i do not reinforce it. Let the Persian tide break itself on the walls of Trabzon. I am building up a huge force under Ibrahim and the time will come when Persians will feel our steel.

14 MuHarram (sept 22)- Sinan Pasha conquers Moldova. According to my instructions the surviving Moldovian boyars are dragged by their beards to their graves and buried alive. This is what happens to those who defy the Sword of the Prophet.

12 Raby` al-awal (nov 18) Bolent Pasha takes Alepo. The Persian army, after its failed siege of Trabzon tries to reconquer Kurdistan while Ibrahim Pasha is campaigning in Armenia.

902 A.H. (1497AD)

Amasya Pasha takes Lebanon, and soon we shall be in striking distance of Jerusalem.

28 Rajab (april 2) Judea falls to our armies. Allah is pleased.

27 RamaDHaan (may 30) Our troops capture Samaria. Sinan Pasha arives in Nuyssaybin and obliterates Mameluke resistence in the field. The siege begins. Shiites seem little better at warfare than Christians.

30 SHawwal (july1) Word reached me of our conquest of Sinai and Nuyssaybin.

4 MuHarram (sept 1) Our Christian subjects are restless. Those rabid infidels in Mantua are revolting. I will have to set yet another example. Meanwhile Syria falls.

24 Raby` al-THaany (dec 19) Ibrahim Pasha conquers Armenia. At last! I almost had the incompetent decapitated but in the end he delivered. To the South Egypt falls.

903 A.H. (1498AD)

Disaster strikes as Persians take Syria. I hear our garrison fought to the last man. They knew they could expect no mercy.

Rajab (march) - Austria rebel and as SHa`baan (april arrives) Ostmarch raise their flags in defiance. They will be dealt with. Surely they see their doom comming but still prefer to fight for a lost cause. The Sword of the Prophet can not be defeated.

RamaDHaan (may) The Nile Delta is conquered by our ever-victorious army.
Fratricid warfare seems to be a general reality of our time. As we battle our fellow Muslim brothers, the Christians are ravaging Europe in wars of their own. As long as they stay occupied fighting their brethren they will not bother us. Naples, Spain, England and Milan seem to be in a stalemate against France, Savoy, the Papal States and Poland-Lithuania. Reports of several large scale battles abound and I laugh as I hear their pointless fighting. Their enemy is locked in battle in the East and they bicker among themselves. Let the wolves destroy each other, Allah will guide us to victory.

Thw al-Qi`dah (july)- We retake Kurdistan, but 58 thousand Imperial troops are defeated by 48 thousand Persian scum in Armenia. I have all the surviving generals executed. When one can not capitalize on his numerical advantage one does not deserve to live.

904 A.H. (1499AD)
A mostly uneventful year. A plethora of skirmishes and small-scale battles.
I've put the fear of Allah in my generals and they manage to conquer Azerbadjan and to retake Syria.
War drags on with no end in sight.

905 A.H. (1500AD)

Things look grimer than usual. The plague of rebellions continues in our Christian provinces. We put down one rebellion and two more appear! I am beggining to think that the only good Christian is a dead Christian. They just do not seem to understand when they are defeated. If I offer them mercy they take it and as I turn my back they rise again...What am I to do but send them to the hells they belong in?

Our armies in Egypt have lost momentum as we are defeated in the desert near the Pyramids. Gazing at the ancient pharaohs' tombs i try to take my mind away from the plague decimating our troops and the trail of dead warriors we leave behind. We fight yet the Mamelukes have the desert on their side. This is not a war of men, it is a war against the elements. I almost want to order the dunes beaten with whips as an ancient Persian emperor once did with the restless sea. Weapons of steel can not stop us yet we are buried in a sea of sand.

24 SHa`baan (march 25) We are forced to sign a peace with the Mamelukes. We take Syria Nuyssaybin and Alepo, yet the taste of victory is sour in my mouth. Many sons of Anatolia died in the deserts, fighting thirst not steel, and the Persian front is filled with uncertainty. Christianity continues its fratricide warfare but I am plagued by dreams of destruction. I see them unite against us and I see my Janisaries fighting to the last to keep the Prophet's flag flying. I see the sword of the prophet broken, and I see the dunes of the Sahara. A storm of swords shall come, yet we are steadfast. May Allah preserve the Empire.

Yeah, there have been too many ottoman AARs. The most famous being Kekkonen's.

Great Story!

Hi Shaytana!

Very well-written and thoroughly enjoyable AAR--makes me want to try the Ottomon. Of course I want to try a bunch of nations after reading so many great AAR's...all in due time...all in due time!

Do you or anybody else ever get bored playing EU, or does it maintain a good replay value even after hundreds of hours of play? Just curious.

I never get bored! This is THE GAME I bought my first computer for, but back then the closest you could get was 'beachhead'... then a few SSI titles, and WOW! Defender of the Crown!

But it was well worth the wait (and all those computers in between)...

This game is like a drug. You put it down and it comes back at you...and once you start playing you can't stop. Last night for example I was playing Wallachia and started off brightly and just couldn't stop...a serious case of 'one more province'...it was around 12am and I told myself just 15 more minutes...the next thing I know is looking at a clock showing 7.30 in the morning...well at least I had the Balkans conquered by then...still I could barely take myself away from the prospect of humbling Austria before a well deserved nap...

yep, I play using normal/normal...
I think waiting for the Turks is a big mistake - Hungary and Austria are easy targets due to their minimal fortifications and small armies...The Ottomans can easily annex them realy fast if done right (just look at the two parts of my aar :p)
Rebellions are more of a problem than Christian coalitions at times. :( The West tend to wage warfare on one another and with the right bribes you can stay out of it, while they're occupied in petty wars somewhere. also an Ottoman player should have no problem defeating invasion atempts from the West early on*well I mean close to no problem...
and also...if tragedy strikes and you're on the losing side it makes the game much better...
One of the games I enjoyed most was when all the world and their grandmas came at me...now that is FUN. :p
(excellent time for some heroic whining)
