Hello all,

I have a suggestion to improve the succession process for monarchs. I have found that often a country I am playing is hobbled when my heir turns out to be of low quality and I believe this idea will help mitigate that, while still keeping the element of random chance for monarch skills.

I propose that the player be able to see the next few heirs in line to the throne and their skills (randomly generated as current). From this menu, the player can select their preferred heir when their current monarch dies.

However, selecting a different heir to the throne other than who was supposed to inherit it would have negative consequences which increase in severity as a potential heir is farther in the line of succession. These consequences would of course include significant legitimacy hits, but also could include stability loss and perhaps some negative events. The monarch that is supposed to be next in line could also rise up as a pretender if they are not crowned (making it a tougher choice if one needs to fight an army led by a monarch with 0-0-6 stats with a large base of support).

Different heirs could also be from different lines or closer to other countries. For example, maybe it might be best to pick an heir with less skills but closer ties to a critical ally.

The player could also perhaps fabricate claims (like for provinces) for certain heirs over others, reducing the penalty for diverging from the line of succession, but with a risk of being caught with adverse consequences. The covert and aristocratic idea trees could be affect the selection process by making it easier to fabricate a claim for one heir over another, or reduce penalties of an heir change.

In regards to history, when I though of this idea I was thinking a kind of Glorious Revolution context. Perhaps a parliament, or scheming nobility, meddling in the succession line.

What do you all think? Good/bad? Too ahistorical? Too much like CK2?

Too ahistorical I imagine-by the timeframe of EU4 inheritance by the eldest son had become the norm. What you're describing is a succession law a lot of countries had in earlier times. I do support being able to see the next few heirs in line though.

You're assuming that "heirs" are "eldest sons" anyway. They aren't all, nor were they all historically. Just look at Mary -> Elizabeth -> James in England.
