Over my many play throughs, I've had sons, and daughters beg and plead to join Holy Orders, at considerable cost-in piety-to me, and with a high risk of destroying the succession, or any Alliances I might want to make with other Rulers. Just now, I had a 14-year-old Greedy, Gluttonous Daughter ask to join a nunnery.

She wasn't Zealous, though, which I would think should be mandatory for someone-especially a child-to enter a Holy Order of any kind.

This should also apply to sons asking to enter Templars or Hospitalars.

As of now, the option's sole purpose is to screw the player over.

Making the Zealous trait a requirement for asking to join would go a long way toward easing the problem...

but sending sons/daughters to orders by player is prefered to murder them to eliminate bad/excesive heirs. but yes, voluntering for orders can be problem if you have low amount of heirs.
