Fascinating rules. Sounds like a great variant. Perhaps an MP monarch-impaired game in the future? It certainly makes a big difference...

I think Warspite might be on to something here. It would make an MP game interesting. I'm going to try playing a major country with these rules and see if it really stops them from being able after the first 50 years to wipe the floor with whomever they want. That's what this is ultimately about. How to make the middle and end game interesting when normally it's all over by the first hundred years.

Most majors (perhaps not coincidentally) tend to have great monarchs, don't they? Each country has a few dry spells, sure (cf. Spain), but by and large their skilled monarchs were the factor which helped them succeed, historically. Should be interesting.

True but as you say there are those embarrassing monarchs that come in every country's history that could cause you problems. Certainly Spain, the Ottomans, Russia are a few that had some real stinkers sit on the royal throne.:D And as I posted before there's nothing like being in a war and have your strong monarch die to be followed by someone who has problems walking and talking at the same time. :p

This is another in the long line of original Storey AARs. Excellent take on the work begun by Warspite. I think an MP game where each writer is limited by the skill of the King would be a great idea. It would add a layer of realism that lacks in the typical MP attempt (not that they aren't fun to read). However, I think this method would make the middle and end games far more interesting, as noted.

Have a good holiday.
