Where to begin...
My alien race is a race of psionic adepts that are a Fantatic Spiritualist/pacifist. Over the course of the game, for about the first 250 years, nothing had bothered me. in accordance with the galacitc map, I was on the western side. To the north and south of me were fallen empires, to the south east was a faction of moths that I eventually vassalized (their choice, not mine) and eventually took them into the fold, although beyond them was a super-power. To the North east, the second super power.
So, with the growing powers surrounding me, I started building up a bunch of battle stations, about 7 per system, and had a fleet strength of about 25k, when suddenly, fallen empire to my south awakens. 5 seconds later, he 'asks' if I would like to become a satellite, while 150k fleet strength is within my visible sensors. I begrudgingly accept for the time, although eventually was planning to escape from his grasp.
The now awakened empire goes to war with the rest of the galaxy, and is triumphant, and creates a small faction of 1 planet, which also becomes a satellite. Now, the big thing about satellites under this awakened empire is that all satellites must protect the independence of every other one of the satellites. This one lone planet, with a fleet strength of about 1k, DECLARES WAR ON THE AWAKENED EMPIRE! I am forced into a war I didn't ask for, against my own evil overlord, unexpectedly.
For 50 years, I had to hit and run on so many of his little outposts, although when the war first began, I took so many hits from him blowing up space stations and the like. He ends up setting foot on two of my planets, although I end up blowing up 3 of his outposts. Suddenly, another contender enters the fray, right in between me, the awakened empire, and the growing power to the south east. The Unbidden arrive.
In all honesty, I am unsure if it is a blessing or a curse, but it drove away a few of the fallen empires fleets, although I still had one fleet flying around my systems with a fleet strength of 40k, where as my fleet that I had slowly been rebuilding got back up to 20k from hit and runs. Suddenly, 20 years after the arrival of the Unbidden, the war ends. I had no say in the war conditions, nor when it would end due to the interactions of 'protecting the in dependency of the small tiny empire!" He gives up one of my battle stations and my homeworld. I wanted to immediately kill and conquer that one little planet that drove me into losing so much resources, let alone losing three worlds to the unbidden so far, and yet, I can't. Because I am still a Satellite under the awakened empire, I cannot cut ties of protecting independence, cannot declare war on other satellites, but can declare war on my overlord... The one that would cream me again and again.
TDLR: Never become a satellite, never trust the AI to do things smart, and please let this be seen for posterity in hopes that there is some better way of diplomatic interactions that aren't so convoluted as this that drags me into the most insane situation out there, even if its down the road in an update of some sort.
