Chapter 3.1 – Sunset Invasion, 302-304 CE

The council was meeting to discuss the existing religions in the new world, but everything was interrupted because of the message that came from the Mayan agents in Ispal… the Turdetanii had declared war against the Lusitanians, it was something that the Mayans were waiting for, because that was designated as the starting point of the Invasion on their war plans.

In a matter of hours, messengers were sent to the other islands colonized by the Maya, and then boats with soldiers, supplies and weapons arrived to the temporary capital of the invaders in the Canary Islands. The gathered forces, both Mayan and mercenary were ready for the invasion in less than a week.

The plan was simple, the Mayan forces would land in Cadiz while the hired mercenaries invaded North Africa, of course Muuk'naal would lead the invaders of Cadiz while their generals took care of the rest.

The idea of dividing the invading forces was simple, the Turdetanii could not defeat either of the two contingents because they would be busy confronting the Lusitanians and by the time they realized what was happening it would be too late….

In the day 6 of the fourth month of 302 CE the Mayan expeditionary forces invaded the mainland, the first part of the plan had been successful, the Turdetanii fleet had not been an obstacle to the first part of the war.

I1EZBa3.jpg

The Battle of Jerez

Muuk’naal was laying siege to Jerez, a settlement that was between his forces and Cadiz when he was informed about a large Celtiberian army marching to his position, he quickly dispatched messengers so he could get reinforcements to prevent their enemies getting the upper hand on the battle to come.

vBpQc4D.jpg

An old man by the time of the invasion, Adelfonso was a seasoned warrior and leader.

It was too late, the army led by the Duke Adelfonso of Granada rushed their way to Jerez, and attacked before the Ahau could get reinforcements, the forces looked evenly matched and the locals had to cross a river, so Muuk’naal was confident on his victory.

Maybe he was too confident.

The Celtiberian army had more horses, so for them was easy to bite and flight from the invaders while sustaining far, far less losses than the Mayans, and Adelfonso of Granada knew the terrain better than Muuk’naal and because of that could design a better strategy, soon the result was clear, and after months of skirmishes the victory was obtained by the Turdetanii the , even with the Mayans getting reinforcements.

lI1U4Tz.jpg

After retreating from battle Muuk’naal ordered a full retreat from the Ispanian lands to Africa, there they could reorganize their army and prepare for the next battle, this defeat would not be the end of the war for the Mayans.

The African Strategy

Muuk’naal plan had failed and many young men died because of his mistakes. Of course he felt horribly bad because of it, but he could not allow himself to be depressed, he was the leader of the invading forces and if he let these negative feelings dominate his heart then the long awaited invasion of the ancestral lands would fail.

So in conjunction with his council he redesigned their strategy, from now the Berber mercenaries would be liberating the countryside while the Mayans with other African mercenaries would be waiting for the Turdetanii to cross the strait between the Pillars of Melqart. They needed their fleet allow that crossing so the Celtiberians so they would position themselves between the hammer (the Mayan fleet) and the anvil (the Mayan armies), the captains of the Mayan Fleet were ordered to harass the northern dominions of their enemies, so their enemies would believe that the crossing of the strait was safe.

The Duke of Granada took the bait, he didn’t wanted to wait until the strange invaders got stronger and he believed that these weaklings he defeated at the battle of Jerez would not be a match for his seasoned army.

The Celtiberians didn’t expected to be attacked as soon as they disembarked and that proved to be a fatal mistake, Muuk’naal would not repeat two times the error of underestimating his foe and ordered a frontal attack with everything he had.

The battle of Laraiche was the opposite of the battle of Jeréz, and while the Turdetanii were being slaughtered some of them tried to escape to the shores were they discovered that their ships were sunk by the Mayan fleet.

dExkXZY.jpg

After the total victory in the battle of Laraiche in the winter of 302 more Berber tribes joined the invasion forces, Muuk'naal promised them independence from the Turdetanii and a role in his new Kingdom if they wanted to integrate it in the future. In turn the Mayans gained access to the horses of these desert tribes and more knowledge about their enemies and the terrain.

It took two more years for the Mayan/Berber forces to secure their control over the African dominions of the Turdetanii, after which their fleet allowed the crossing of all the invading forces towards Cadiz.

The restoration of Ispania was at hand.

Chapter 3.2 – Ain't No Rest For The Wicked, 307-308 CE
Chapter 3.2 – Ain't No Rest For The Wicked, 307-308 CE

After the victory of the strange invaders in the battle of Laraiche, the Duke of Granada, leader of the Turdetanii resistance against the advance of the Mayan army ordered the withdrawal of the civilian population from the villages north of the strait that separated Africa from Europe. Entire towns were vacated and burned to avoid giving advantage to the foreign hordes that apparently appeared out of horror stories, the Duke of Granada had circulated stories about men of dark complexion and elongated heads who spoke a strange language and who took prisoners to sacrifice them to their dark Gods, so the frightened Celtiberian civilians fled to the north willingly, hoping that their Emperor's armies could one day make these demons return to their mysterious lands in the west so they could return to their lost homes…

But the Mayans didnt crossed the strait in 302, or the next year ... instead, they occupied the north African dominions of the Turdetanii, strengthened their alliances with the Berber tribes and following the orders of the Mayan High priest ... waited for a sign in the heavens.

The Turdetanii armies tried to cross the straits to reconquer their northern African domains many times, losing every time, weakening themselves in the process.

In 307 a comet appeared in the sky announcing that the victory of the Mayans was assured according to the High Priest, at the same time Haztzutz the wife of the Muuk'naal was about to give birth to a male child, so the stars blessed his people not only with a future ruler who had the favor of the gods but also with a new land to live in. A double blessing, from now on the Maya had only to advance and take the lands that belonged to them by divine right.

Rhsd6CK.jpg

The Mayan forces crossed the strait without problems thanks to their supremacy on the seas, quickly taking the Turdetanii villages since there was no resistance of any kind as the villagers had left. It didn't matter, they would soon be replaced with peasants brought from the western lands, and of course, by the slaves they could capture during the conquest.

Ispal, the ancient capital of the Turdetanii fell without sorrow or glory, but in Cadiz Muuk'naal encountered resistance from his old enemy, the Duke of Granada.

vwl6bfE.jpg

The Battle of Cadiz was the final confrontation of the war and the victory was for the Mayans, from there the occupation of the lands that the Yujnegi once ruled would be finished, with the added benefit of the conquered territories in North Africa and the alliance with the Berbers.

VWyAFP4.jpg

The Kingdom of Ishfania, or Ispania as it would be known from now on, was restored. Zinnridi Yujnegi's great plan had finally been fulfilled.

The future of Ispania

Cadiz, 308.

AZBz9lU.jpg

After his humble coronation, Muuk’naal summoned his council to discuss urgent matters, they had succeeded with the conquest of Ispania even after suffering some losses, and had to prepare for the second phase of the plan, but first, they had to solve the issues regarding the Celtiberian and Berber subjects they ruled from now on.

TwdoW9t.jpg

They had promised Independence to the Berber Tribes that aided the Mayan invaders with their first victory, and some in the council didn’t wanted to honor that agreement, so they were discussing these matters in a heated debate:

- In the past we fought accompanied by our great Berber allies, we cannot simply ignore the promise that was made to them and that was what led us to victory, our honor would be tainted forever if we were left with the lands we liberated for them, our kingdom is here, north of the strait. Africa was never in our plans or those of our ancestors, if we force the Berbers to begin a revolt against our reign ... we will end up losing valuable warriors in a meaningless confrontation and provoking the Celtiberians to continue on their way, we would get into an endless war, where any of the powers that surround us could take advantage of the chaos to expel us from these lands once and for all!- Lu'um the Mashal, looked at the other council members and and gently tapped the meeting table with his fingers, making a soft sound that gave some strength to his words. - I must remember each of you the undeniable fact that we are still a minority in these lands…?

The council members looked at each other with concern because they knew the Marshal was right, and they did not want to provoke the Berbers into an open war ... much blood could be shed in vain, which would weaken the Mayan position in the region forever.

- Well, we promised that in the war, and if we don't keep our word we will have to face the fury of the Berber tribes, and even if that doesn't happen, betraying a pact will set a bad precedent in the future when we want to make alliances ..- said The Spymaster while touching her fish-like pendant- … but we also know that we need these lands for agriculture, as these lands are far from our future frontlines against the Turdetanii, and these Berber warriors would fight our wars while our Celtiberian subjects could easily betray us to their former masters…I suggest bribing the Berber leaders so they remain divided against us…maybe giving them some power to maintain them distracted and looking for the help of our distant eastern kin…

The High Priest silently looked at the pendant that the Spymaster had in her neck… he never trusted that woman because she always questioned the power of the priesthood, and if the rumors were true…she was an heretic who were poisoning the mind of the Ahau…

- Well, with all due respect my dear Ix-Ahau, first you tried to involve us in the current Etruscan Civil war without success, that would have bled our treasure dry and delayed our glorious invasion, now you suggest that we have to betray the word of honor that we gave to the Berber leaders who, I remind you, were the ones who helped us win this city and restore our kingdom. I think maybe ... you have been influenced too much by those ... distant cousins we have in the east. - The High Priest looked closely at his Ahau, who was serious - perhaps your highness is too distracted from the issues that summon us to this meeting to issue such a dangerous judgment ... the Berbers will rebel, and our brothers will pay with your blood the blindness that afflicts you! ...

Until now, the High Priest had been trying to convince Muuk’naal to fire his wife from the council since he thought that the queen should keep taking care of and educating her children and heirs instead of meddling in the politics of the kingdom. All this without success, because Haztzutz, clearly a heretic too influenced by her education in the east, had completely enchanted the sovereign with his charms ... in vain he had tried to undo the spell ... now he was trying to take direct action against that damned woman.

The Ahau of Ispania was about to say something, when a when a worried messenger entered the meeting room with terrible news: Sardinian troops were invading their lands from the east.

QYUntQn.jpg

The meeting was cancelled and orders were issued to mobilize the army and hire more mercenaries, now it was clear:

The future of Ispania was to stay at war. They didn’t had the time to discuss these matters...for now.

Chapter 3.3 – War in all fronts. 308-323
Chapter 3.3 – War in all fronts. 308-323

Returning from a personal Apocalypse, a change of line of work and a literal rebellion on my country, I continue with this story.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
The great Ahau of the Mayans marched with great faith on his gods after defeating wave after wave of the Corsican invaders that threatened to undo everything his family line had achieved and after the Battle of Cadiz seemed like the war was about to be won, and the only direct menace to his cause was that the Corsicans were subjects of the Empire of Carthage, and if their enemies got support from their overlords the Mayans could not face the overwhelming might of their combined armies, at least not yet.
But then that risk was avoided when most of the subjects of Carthage started a war for their independence the next year, the African Empire crumbled into pieces, something that could something that should be taken advantage of in the near future.

2s9rDRH.jpg

Not everything was good, as the Berbers saw their opportunity to regain their independence, something that they wanted centuries before the Mayans arrived on the old world and that was promised by Muuk’naal, the Ahau of the Mayans when he was fighting the Turdetani… the Berbers felt that they did all the heavy lifting on that war and then were ignored by the Mayans,. Of course that could not be tolerated, so they revolted against the yoke of the Mayans in 309.

JSZmoKY.jpg

The Berber revolution started on the mountains of Muluja, and day after day more and more discontent tribes joined the ranks of the rebels, according to the Mayan spies among the Berbers there were more than eight thousand warriors against the few warriors under the orders of Muuk’naal, so the Ahau the king hired mercenaries to fill his ranks and marched towards Moclin, where in June of the Year 310 he defeated the Corsican invaders.

VeFjm9m.jpg

As his victorious army was celebrating the end of the Corsican Invasion, the Ahau ordered the fleet to provide transportation to the African coasts, because he needed to defeat the Berber Revolution before they got even stronger, something he achieved in October of 310 against a weakened Berber army, somehow they could not support such a big army on their own land and attrition did all the work for the Mayans.

After the Battle of Tagrágrá the Berber Revolution ended, and at the same time, and seeing the weakened state of the successor states of the Carthaginian Empire that recently gained their independence Muuk’naal decided that was the time to strike.

nq7J2Cq.jpg

The Ahau declared war on the newly formed Kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica, the Mayan fleets and armies overwhelmed the recently liberated islanders who were already facing a peasant revolt and they surrendered in October of the Year 314, now the Balearic Islands and the continental territories previously owned by Carthage were under the banner of the Mayans.

The Mayan military was at peak condition, and taking advantage of that Muuk’naal declared a second invasion on the Turdetanii lands to secure their northern border in 315, the poor Iberians weren’t prepared for another war after the first defeat the suffered against the Mayan invaders, but they resisted again with a fierce resolution, the war would continue for a long time, as the Iberians used guerrilla tactics to delay the advance of their more powerful enemy.

But as the Second Invasion on the Turdetanii lands was slowly coming to an end, the Berbers launched a second revolt in the mountains of Muluja, this time a few tribes were willing to revolt and the Mayan leadership decided to let them have their petty rebellion for a while, as they were busy ending the conquest of their northern enemy.

DX7JKIK.jpg

The battle of Cordoba was the final battle of the 2nd Invasion on the Turdetanii lands, and Muuk’naal had to personally duel Balkar Ansurez, the son of the late Duke of Granada, the Iberian hero in the First Invasion. His victory led to the end of the warand thanks to that that the Mayans doubled their territorial gains in Iberia.

eu5Jl5L.jpg

Muuk’naal, as the Ahau of all the Mayans, always led their men into victory and refused to be a leader who sat quietly in his palace while his men gave their lives for him and for the kingdom, this finally cost him an eye. While finishing with the weak second Berber Revolution in the Battle of Taza one of the rebels managed to hit him with the tip of his spear ... the rebel was quickly beheaded by the Ahau using his Macuahuitl but the damage was already done.

RJNezUL.jpg

A few weeks after the Mayan victory against the Berber rebels, an Ambassador from the distant Phoenician Kingdom of Philistea requested a meeting with the Ahau, apparently the feats of the Maya had crossed the Mediterranean and the Phoenician origin of the Muuk'naal family could offer some advantages in this old world. They were alone in Iberia and with no allies, after all...creating a new home for the Maya was not something that could be achieved only through the force of arms.

Chapter 3.4 – Exiles and Champions (323-332 CE)
Chapter 3.4 – Exiles and Champions (323-332 CE)

The Christian Migrants (323)

More than 300 years ago, in the lands that were now part of the Kingdom of Philistia and that had been for centuries under the tyrannical dominion of the Assyrians ... a man came to change everything, his name was Jesus Christ and his actions changed the region forever, the Emperor of Babylonia ordered his execution hoping to eliminate his teachings but death only made his ideas even more powerful.

This is how the Phoenicians and Hebrews with the help of the Lydian Empire and the Kingdom of Egypt achieved the independence of their little kingdom, Christianity however, without a central authority that defined that it was heresy and that it was not, diversified significantly in the east, and the popularity of its message of hope in a world in chaos allowed the new religion to spread throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Small Christian communities existed in many places completely independently and without disturbing the powers established with their presence too much.

jBsmtJ1.png

Currently, christianity its mostly irrelevant in Europe.
But now the Kingdom was under the direct threat of invasion and the old alliances that allowed its independence no longer existed, so King Eshmunshalokh of Philistia had sent ambassadors to different kingdoms, Ispania was one of them.

VYoiYGj.jpg

Hatzutz, the wife of Ahau had converted to Christianity in one of her trips to the east that were part of her education as a future Ahau of the Maya and it was precisely in Jerusalem, the capital of Philistea that she met some "Euchites" (those who pray) as they were called the Christians of Philistia themselves.

The woman for years and without success had tried to convince her husband and the Mayan nobles to accept the new religion, that had damaged her image irreversibly before the royal court. The position of Muuk'naal and the nobles was that the Mayan rites and traditions should be preserved at all costs since they had been them, and not strange Eastern religions, which had allowed their people to survive so far in this hostile world.

The Spymaster thought it was different now, the Mayans were surrounded by enemies and needed alliances, no matter how distant they were. Great was the disappointment of Hatzutz when he learned that the Phoenicians did not come to establish an alliance with the Maya but to request a pact for their people to flee from the Kingdom of Philistea and settle in Ispania.

The Ahau, seeing a good opportunity to increase the number of subjects under his command accepted to take in the refugees in Ispania and gave them the territories of Aracena to build their cities, churches and roads, promising them religious tolerance and economic benefits, they would be ruled by one of their own after swearing loyalty to the Kingdom of Ispania.

This is how from the year 323 CE and traveling using part of the Mayan fleet, the Phoenician Christians and Hebrew Jews began their migration to the new lands of the Maya, Christianity interacted for the first time with invaders beyond the sea.

The Blood games of Cadiz (330-332)
In 330 Muuk’naal ordered the conquest of the lands of Marrakesh after the Berber tribe ruling over there raided the border villages of the Kingdom of Ispania, such an offense could not be tolerated and the priests offered rewards for every Berber nobleman captured alive so they could sacrifice them later to the gods, fear was necessary to prevent the other local tribes from trying to do the same in the future and the gods needed more blood and the royal house their blessing. This was rare on Mayan tradition but now, as they were invading new lands and had no allies between the inhabitants of the old world they needed all the help possible from their gods, so human sacrifice began to become something more and more common on Mayan religion.

As the war raged on the south, Muuk’naal marched into Sidi Rahhal, the capital of his enemies and completely razed it, taking many prisoners of noble birth that later were sacrificed to the gods.

kLFQuLO.jpg

Even with this victory the Berbers continued resisting the invasion of their homeland. If the Berber stood out in any way, it was the courage they demonstrated on the battlefield, that sadly made them valuable sacrifices for the Mayan Gods, so this war was a holy war to win divine favor for the kingdom.

As the Berbers didn’t surrender even with the brutality of the Mayan invaders, Muuk’naal ordered an entire month of festivities so his people could regain moral, and to end them, he ordered the organization of a great Blood Game, something that had not being done since at least a century. Men of all ways of life gathered on the newly constructed Arena of Cadiz to fight for the honor of pleasing the Gods with their own blood and gaining the respect of their people, the glory of the Champion this time would be rewarded with the title of Ahau of Marrakesh and the hand of one of the daughters of the Ahau of Ispania, Tzunun. Thus starting a new noble family tied with the sacred blood of Q'ukumatz.

yYubkeO.jpg

After a bloody tournament with tons of sacred deaths a warrior named Oncan was the new Champion, now founder of the House Oncan, new rulers of Marrakesh because the gods wanted it… the war ended the same day the warrior won the competition, showing that the man and his descendants will have the favor of the gods for the next generations.

sxzr8VR.jpg

Of course this also caused Muuk'naal to be acclaimed by his people because of the blessings his wars had brought on the Maya, and from the victory over the Berber of Marrakesh he began to be nicknamed "The sword of Baluc Chabtan" who is the god of war and sacrifice of the Maya.

Im still thinking how christianity can overcome the barriers to become a mainstream faith in this world, still, nothing is impossible for the Ck2 random engine, if in one game i saw the Bizantines become taoists (what!?), why not christianity can become a thing in this world?

To run with one historical theory, you could have a chance for people or provinces to flip to Christianity after plagues pass through a region. The theory is that Christians tending to the sick both helped more Christians survive, and convinced people (particularly poor people) to convert.

That could be amazing, but i dont know how to code something like that :D

Chapter 3.5- Sadness– 334 BCE
Chapter 3.5- Sadness– 334

Cadiz, 334

Hatzutz, the Master of Spies and wife of the Ahau was leaving a small Christian chapel located on the outskirts of the Mayan capital after attending mass with some of her Phoenician friends, after walking a few blocks accompanied by her guards a mob of Mayan religious fanatics began throwing stones at the Ix-Ahau (the female title for the wife of the Ahau) and taking advantage of the confusion one of the subjects approached the old woman and stabbed her several times and quickly ending her life.

9hPNG7M.jpg

This event caused fear in the population of the kingdom of Ispania because people of Celtic, Maya, Jewish, Semitic, Berber and Christian beliefs lived together under the banner of Q’uk’umatz and one of the most important characteristics of the Muuk'naal reign was that once a new territory was conquered the non-mayans could continue to worship their gods without problems as long as they were loyal to the kingdom. This crime was something that could spark riots on many cities if the Mayan fanatics killed more innocent people. In this case the victim of the murder was the wife of Ahau, someone was sending a message to the whole kingdom, at least that was what the nobles believed.

Muuk'naal was extremely sad, Hatzutz had accompanied him for years and although he never understood why his beloved worshipped a Jewish guy whom the Assyrians had nailed to a cross, he was outraged that his own people were capable of an act of such cruelty. Yes, he himself had sacrificed many enemies to his gods during his military campaigns, but that was part of the rules of the Mayan warfare, not a criminal act on itself, the gods needed the blood of his enemies to grant him the blessings that allowed to prosper in this old lands, and he shared these blessings with all his subjects, Mayan or not.

After investigating the prisoners that had taken part on the murder of his wife and later torturing the head of the conspiracy for several weeks he sacrificed him to the gods, confiscated his property and sold his family as slaves. On every corner of the Kingdom the associates of the criminal were granted the same treatment, that was necessary to do justice for the Ix-Ahau but the damage to the Ahau himself was already done.

xmDCKW0.jpg

Muuk’naal had ruled for 27 years the Kingdom he carved in the old world and now was tired of it, he wanted to take his people back to Yucatan, the lands of his ancestors and live a simpler life after restoring the Mayan Empire to its past glory, but he knew that wasn’t possible, these lands were abandoned for a reason and the prophecies of Dido Yujnegi told about the doom of these sacred lands if the Q’uk’umatz remained there after reconquering Ishfania, the conquest of the Old World was necessary to ensure the future of the Mayan people and he was the man who made that possible. He understood his own importance in the big scheme of things…yet he was tired of being an instrument of destiny.

How was it possible to live if the love of his life was no longer with him? With whom would he share the loneliness and burdens that the power and responsibility to govern over such varied groups of people cause in people like him? Old age had caused his body to be weak even though his spirit remained as strong as ever, but without his partner, without his friend, his lover, his spirit weakened more and more. He no longer got up at dawn but waited a couple more hours to mourn his loss, he began to let his council make important decisions for the kingdom, delayed construction projects that required his supervision, day by day the light of his eyes and of his life was going out, the powerful Muuk'naal was now a silent man who enjoyed walking alone through his chambers and spent long evenings looking at the horizon ... as if wishing to make the trip back to Yucatan, as his ancestors did so many centuries ago ...

The great Ahau of the Mayans died knowing that he made everything he could to ensure the wellbeing of his people, but he lacked the will to continue living on this world, he died of severe stress and was succeeded by his grandson, Chak Tok Ich’aak Q’uk’umatz.

Muuk’naal’s funeral rituals lasted for a month after his cremation, his ashes were buried in a complex that was built under the central plaza of Cadiz.

K7n4o3k.jpg

Meanwhile in the east… a group of brave horsemen were beginning to change the stability of the old world forever as they waged war on the Hellenic realms of the east.
