I would suggest something like this;

-conquer Tripolitania, Tunis or some other North African provinces
-gain a foothold at Granada if possible.
-attack Thedoro if it exists
I'm sure this overextension penalty will help a lot. :)

-save game often :D
It doesn't count if it's not in Ironman mode :)
(seriously, I'm sure there will be an achievement for that :) )

I find this concept of calling them overpowered odd.

No shit? Of course they're overpowered? There's a reason they won.

Yes, they were superior, but not superhuman. In the battle of Varna, the turks took big loses as well. It was a little like seeing the horde conquer large pices of land in no time. No army had any chance. If this is the same in EU4, I can't see any fun playing as the Ottomans.

I enjoy playing the ottomans. I don't play them often simply because they are a superpower and thus not as challenging as playing a minor. That said however. I have enjoyed the "flavour" of an ottoman game.

Since it's now confirmed that we have CK2 converter (http://www.europauniversalis4.com/buy) restoring Roman Empire should be much easier :)

ya makes me want to continue my old save game... its got several centuries before getting even close to 1400's since i started in Old Gods start date. That said I conquered most of France and Nearly got all of Spain from the Muslims and the franks.

So If i do a save game conversion the entire Trajan borders will likely have been restored (along with Norse pagans reforming and dominating both Russia and Scandinavia since conversion is nearly impossible in old gods for some reason)

For this i typically perfer Genoa given their not occupying any byzantine core provinces and their second only to Venice in their galley fleet. Not to mention they do typically send a fleet to their holding in Crimera to transport troops occasionally there so their likely to be in the area if hostilities pop up with the Ottomans.

Then you are telling us you would give up the province Nero created when you could instead hold out hope as you reconquer islands and North Africa perhaps even rebuilding Carthage and return to everything later?

Alliances dont last forever child. I give up nothing.

Good because if you gave up his province he would come back from the dead and call his candle workship

But now being seriously I think the Justinian idea of making North Africa the focus of the empire, then later colonization and reconquest of Greece could be the path for the Byzantines. Mods in EU3 closed the ability to blockade the straights and if Paradox has allowed closing it probably also made the ai keep troops on both sides. Keeping the islands to avoid a cultural shift would make Greek culture cores last forever; so after westernization for better soldiers, colonization for money, NA and Greek Islands for the base of the army/navy, and teching up it could be a good idea to launch our own reconquesta. If we have a Spanish neighbor on good terms with us we could even have their help; much better then a galley fleet.

The challenge I think will be the clock; can you defeat enough minors before the Ottomans decide it is your turn to die?

Meh... maybe it will work in the game, but please don't quote me Justinian! He's the one who doomed the Eastern Empire. His armies ravaged Italy and actually created what's called the Dark Age (Italy was depopulated and culture totally destroyed, Rome the city, didn't recover until the Renaissance) and he bankrupted the Empire to do his conquering. In his quest to win support in Italy he increased persecutions on other christian sects like the Monophysites, who were the majority in Egypt, Palestine and Siria. They of course converted in mass when the Muslim Arabs came: Islam was more near their philosophy, but mostly they were freaking tired of being persecuted and they didn't have any love toward the high echelons of the Church and the Empire.

Shortly put, if he hadn't lived at all, history would have been very different and probably WAY better for the Eastern Empire.

ya he definitely over-reached. You know the Hagia Sofia that he built initially collapsed they had to rebuild it better after his death.

True on all counts; but the christians of egypt were definitely persecuted by the muslim conquerors. I just don't see paradox advertising how much of an easier time it will be for the Ottomans; then making it still be easy/possible for Byzantines to win in the greek mainland.

Oh, I have no doubt they have made it easier for the ottomans to succeed, but that does not mean a human Byzantine player will be very hard. I actualy expect it to be easier infact. Besides, restoring Byzantine in eu3 was easy if you do things correctly, even if it is harder this time I still expect it to be possibru!
