Restoring Roman Empire:

1. Play Ottomans
2. Annex Byzantium
3. Declare yourself the Sultanate of Rome
4. Conquer Europe and restore the Roman Empire

I don think theres an actual decision to declare yourself Sultanate of Rome. And that was always a lesser title of the Ottoman Sultans not a primary one, so to truly restore the Empire you need to restore it with the Byzantines leader whos primary title is Emperor of Romania (land of the romans). I mean can you play as the kingdom of wales when your primary nation title is England? Not in EU4 you cant maybe in CK2 :p

Considering the West is partly responsible for the Empire's collapse and the greek peoples vehement hatred of the Latins for their attempt to rule over them tyrannical (which resulted in John VII's failure to unite the two churches to consolidate as opposition against the ottomans). I do not believe this is a winning strategy not to attack those minors. Specially given the new diplomatic rules of the AI caring less about other nations the farther away they are from them and you gaining little to no hostile aggression penalty retaking cores.

True alliances with the western powers is important but i would not sacrifice retaking Greek land to do so.

Byzantium should recover the lands, but AFTER securing its flanks against the powerful Ottomans which are the immediate danger. Adding more rivals in the first decades of the game will simply speed up defeat.
The West is partly responsible because they rulers couldn't agree on a common policy and solve religious and dogmatic issues, not because the West preferred the Ottomans instead of the Byzantines.

True. Honestly taking the Ottomans is tempting specially with the Sunni piety benifits among others. I might play them in another game after I play byzantium.

I bet restoring the Roman empire as Turkey will still be a challenge as Europe may be more alarmed at a rising Islamic power than an Orthodox power. Not to say it will be harder than the Byzantines though as it definitely will not

Part of the appeal of playing Byzantium is that it's a very challenging puzzle at the beginning that we can all talk about -- sure you can play as Ottomans, but you have so many options some of which are fairly easy to pull off. For Byzantium the situation is fairly constrained at the beginning.

Darkrenown brings up what I was worried about. I didn't think it would be that easy to ally with some Western power such as Aragon since they're Catholic and fairly far away. I also hope the rival mechanic is not as easy to abuse as it seems -- maybe there should be a time limit on it, so you can only change a rival every 50 years or so, or if one of your rivals has gone out of existence.

Last night I was playing as Byzantium in EU3 with the start date 11. november 1444. I find the Ottomans overpowered, because they start with insanely good admirals, gererals, two national ideas with extra manpower og morale, plus their units are already very superior. No AI army had any chance in winning. I beat them only because I had retaken all greek provinces held by the west and in 1450, the Ottomans was still at war with other like at game start. I also had to get a 2 shock general, change my national idea to gain extra morale and hire advisors for discipline/ morale.

I find this concept of calling them overpowered odd.

No shit? Of course they're overpowered? There's a reason they won.

If this strategy "works" in EU4, then for me it would be kind of "gamey". In case you attack the Western states of Greece their guarantors should hate you and actually align with the Ottomans for your speedier destruction.

It works in EU3 (if your careful and attack while their busy with their own wars) and its even easier in EU4 given that only Venice gaurentees the states of Athens, Naxos (obvious cause their vassalage to Venice) and Cyprus. Knights actually have no guarantees now at least at start.

I would suggest something like this;

-attack any OPM in Greece and annex them fast
-conquer Cyprus
-ally with some merchant republic with a big fleet
-keep Ottomans happy and away from attacking you, bribes etc
-conquer Tripolitania, Tunis or some other North African provinces
-gain a foothold at Granada if possible.
-attack Thedoro if it exists
-ally with Hungary if possible, or any strong Ottoman neighbour that has chances of crushing Ottoman armies
-pray
-save game often :D

But truly, you have to gain land somewhere where Ottoman armies cannot march. And keeping a bigger navy than them is also important.

I wonder if there is any chance of Roman Emperors asking the Pope to call a crusade against Ottomans?
I remember the old Eu2 event where you could convert to Catholic and ask the Pope for help.

For this i typically perfer Genoa given their not occupying any byzantine core provinces and their second only to Venice in their galley fleet. Not to mention they do typically send a fleet to their holding in Crimera to transport troops occasionally there so their likely to be in the area if hostilities pop up with the Ottomans.
