So I'm playing as the King of Aquiltatine who's been spreading Occotain culture since the time of the founder. Due to a grandson getting educated outside my control, I take control of a Castillian cultured king. So I spend the next 20 years fighting off revolts as everyone in the realm has a -20 forigner penalty to this guy. I also notice the new culture buildings so I build a few of them.

His son, I make sure, gets educated by a proper Occotainain. When I take the throne as him... all those nice level 3 squire lists that I had built originally...are gone.

Why...just because my ruler had a different culture... did all my previously built buildings get demolished? I sank a lot of gold into getting those to level 3...now I need to do it all over again. Is this a bug or WAD? I would think the provices should remember which level culture structure you built and just replace them with an equal level one.

This is, unfortunately, WAD. I personally strongly dislike it - for me, it basically removes any interest for me to build culture buildings, as you run the risk of losing huge amounts of investment if you get an unfortunate heir. I don't think there's any way to prevent it, short of modding - and I don't think any of the current mods handle this.

So, yeah. Sorry =(

I hand-train most of my heirs. If a potential heir winds up with a foreign culture, I have him assassinated.

Because if they stayed some people (and they know who they are) Would get rulers of different cultures and use this to build up 7 fully upgraded culture buildings, giving them x troops and x tech boost.

A solution would be the culture building is tied to the province's culture rather than the ruler's.

That's what I have going in my personal mod. It's really not more difficult than changing the FROM = { culture = superman } to culture = superman in the file. Works rather well and brings a little diversity.

Elective is great for getting around this, you just pull in some random guy with your culture from the other end of your dynasty and only run into problems if every single member of your dynasty has become a different culture.

A concern I just had about this mechanic, regarding the upcoming Republic DLC: What safeguards will we have against losing buildings when the foreign-educated son of one of the other patrician families is elected into office?

So they still haven't fixed this either? They make one DLC after another, but they aren't able to lock these buildings in place, regardless of the culture? The game is great, but it has some easily fixed flaws and problems that paradox just doesn't work on, it is disappointing.

Another solution, although harder to implement would be to temporarily disable the building when the ruler has the wrong culture.

Or maybe keep the buidling active with an option to replace with the new one (tier 1) it and give a malus to levies while it is present.

I still think it makes more sense to tie the buildings to PROVINCE culture rather than ruler culture.

Agreed, but what if to build them in the first place or upgrade them required BOTH the ruler and province be the appropriate culture, and if a ruler conquers a foreign province with the wrong culture, cultural buildings are destroyed on conquest. This would help preserve a little balance while not punishing people too harshly for not paying attention to how they educate their heirs (which is really strange to me that people just seem to send them to the first person on the list without looking).

I still think it makes more sense to tie the buildings to PROVINCE culture rather than ruler culture.
I have noticed, while not technically "cultural" buildings, but my castles in pagan provinces, no matter the owner, can build warrior cults, while me, as a pagan ruler (that little playable = yes line), they cannot be built in non-pagan provinces. So, like the other ideas, cultural buildings should be tied to province culture.

If you’re willing to cheat (rather than murder your own family under the rules, for gamey reasons), the culture console command works on other people, too.

It would be even neater if it were somehow tied to the culture of the de jure top liege, so that old cultural buildings would only be destroyed after 100 years, due to disuse. During that time, they couldn't be upgraded, but they wouldn't be destroyed instantly. Then you could have a nice cosmopolitan empire.
