whats so stupid?

1. guy who maybe will work on vicky 2 doesnt like this project. i cant believe that people who dislike their work are good for making things they doesnt like!
2. he will be skinhead... he better could grow beard until its reaches his toes :D

1. He said it before, he does like Vicky 2, he just thinks (thought?) that the general public won't like it as much because the Victorian era is not so "hot" as, say, WW2.

First, even assuming that Frederik would be working directly on the project in other ways than, say, those that are his job such as running the business (there might be an opening for him in the partying or finger-painting disciplines), there's nothing whatsoever to indicate that he does not like the project - merely that he fears the financial outcome.

Second, and more generally, the mark of a true professional is doing good work on any project whether he likes it or not. Sure, some people are motivated to go above and beyond the call of duty due to liking a project, others by other factors, but a base level of competence can and must be assumed. Work is not supposed to be fun and play (though it can be great fun when it is).

Fredrik is the CEO, I don't think he actually designs and programs the games (but probably oversees the general direciton the game is going in)

bombshellboi: That's completely false. There is no additional verification after purchasing Empire: Total War. I've never had to, and I do believe we are talking about the same Steam. Here's something that might be related to you and your friends problem with Steam: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3160-AGCB-2555

I don't see Paradox using Steamworks (like E:TW does) or Steam exclusively (they have GamersGate after all), so you don't need to worry. I can't agree with you on Valve either, seeing as they've supported their games for years. Look what they've done for Team Fortress 2, and what they're still doing. Heck, even Counter-Strike:Source and Day of Defeat: Source are getting updates.

It is not.

My mate and I both have experienced this. It says in the E:TW manual and on the box you REQUIRE steam installed and running to play the game.

I resent the implication that I and my friend are lying.
I know what i experienced and I believe my friends telling the truth.

Niether am I or my friend idiots. We know that problems can arise with an out of date version of the stupid program. It WAS updated.

Anyway I am trying not to get wildly off topic.

To stay on topic - Paradox are brilliant and I am hugely looking forward to Vicky 2.

This thread is outright blackmailing of us who would kill for a proper CK2. If Vicky 2 is a failure, our chances drop to negative.

Well, all I can say is that it worked. You have another buyer.

Its kind of like saying. "I don't understand why anyone would live in Spain when they could live in Sweden which is so much better."

I'm a spaniard and say this (with Sweden or other countries) all the time.

I dont entirely agree.

I thought Victoria was plenty fun, I just thought that it had 3 game breaking flaws.

One = The AI was awful.
You would have 200 relations with your neighbour and the minute you move your troops away from the border say to prosecute war on another theatre bam they declare war, and your like wtf?
The world market trading you had to deal with all yourself which was boring and repetitive, because the AI did not intelligently buy and sell your stocks. For example you would have factories consistently out of supplies because the AI doesnt buy what you need for them, and if you buy them if the AI is still on it promptly sells whatever stock you bought.

Two = The existance of POPS made the game a micromanagement nightmare.
The pops thing was a good idea to simulate individual cultures/peoples but having to manage your pops more or less yourself at all times mean when you get a bigger Empire the more pops u had to manage meant you were constantly pausing to stop and tweak what they are doing every few turns especially during a war.
Made it very annoying/irritating.

Three = The user interface was perhaps the worst ive seen in any PI game.
It was difficult to navigate and the ledger made the game feel like it was suffering from SpreadSheet syndrome.
No one likes playing a SpreadSheet.

If they solve these flaws and merge it with the newer engine id say we have a pretty good game on our hands with prospects for good sales.

This one I don't agree with. You only needed to set up the trading at day 1, which took like one minute, and then reconfigure one or two sliders every 5 or 10 years or so when you had a new factory. You also got a notifier when one of your factories were running out of supplies.

The other points are valid though.

Me, I won't mind pre-ordering, if Johan and the team takes its time fine-tuning it and, for God's sake, get as many competent beta-testers as possible to do the testing very thoroughly. Since beta-testing is akin to a real-life job, very time consuming, I do hope Paradox makes the selection for the testers more harsh than for HoI3.

I have no idea if this game will make a profit or not, but I've been playing these games for many years, and Victoria was by far the worst one. Not even the expansion made it better. Apart from what previous people have mentioned (idiotic AI, micromanagement hell), the game A.) had too short of a timeline and B.) simply wasn't fun. POPs were the worst thing in any Paradox game ever. Ever. I guess I just always prefer EU or even CK, but I couldn't get into a game that ended in a hundred years or so. (HoI is almost a pure wargame, that's a bit different.) A huge selling point for me would be an (CK2)-EU3-Vic3-HoI3 exporter that worked well. The keyword there being "well". Being able to seamlessly play these games through would be fantastic.

There's nothing I love more than hearing the word "fun" used in a pretentiously quasi objective fashion. I was not aware the game was too complicated and not enough "fun". But thank you for informing me and the other thousands of fans of this fact. I don't know what we'd do without you.

You should. If nothing else it'll warm you up for Vicky 2. And with its release about a year away, that's just enough time to learn how to play ;)

By big question with steam vs gamersgate is what it Valves cut. Presumably paradox gets 100% of the revenue from the gamersgate version, they get probably a good percentage from Steam/Impulse D2D etc. and then retail. Assuming they can even find someone to stock Vicky2. I don't think I've seen HOI3 in the local EB's or Futureshop/Bestbuys yet. Granted somtimes in EB it is an exercise to find the PC games section, let alone anything on it. Such is the market sadly, if you aren't selling WoW or the sims getting shelf space is hard.

I have promised the dev team (and checked with my family) that I am shaving my head if this project ever sees profit. AND post pictures of it here in the forum.
Now that's an effective anti-piracy initiative!

UPD:
Two = The existance of POPS made the game a micromanagement nightmare.
The pops thing was a good idea to simulate individual cultures/peoples but having to manage your pops more or less yourself at all times mean when you get a bigger Empire the more pops u had to manage meant you were constantly pausing to stop and tweak what they are doing every few turns especially during a war.
Made it very annoying/irritating.
To be frank, POPs were exactly what made me love Vic1. Not only they represented the diferent cultures and peoples, they simulated the society with its worries, ambitions and aspirations; its development, the social groups migrations, the evolution of social consciousness and all such stuff. Removing the POPs system would strip Victoria 2 of that special social feel, and how different from any other Paradox game would it then be?
Surely it was a tedious routine to manage POPs all by yourself, but with this new concept of Ai control the POP system could be vastly improved. Why kill it then?

After all, I like to know the country I govern is populated by actual people, not an abstract pie chart.

Vicky was a game that I always wanted to like, but it never reached the same level as HoI2 and EU2 for me. For a long time I just assumed it was too complex, but reading comments here I'd have to agree it was probably more the interface getting in the way, been a while since I played. I'm sure I would have bought the game eventually, I'm a fan of the direction Paradox games have taken since EU3, but Fred's bet helps insure I'll be pre-ordering it. :D
