Just caught up with this, very enjoyable AAR, you've done well in Africa.

Disappointing to see that the Great War concluded a little too early for you to capitalise, did France make any concrete gains? It will be interesting to see how resilient these alliances are, there is still time for another showdown!

Just the Great War Capitulation stuff.

Well my own Dutch game ended and Europe looked downright strange in 1936:
The NGF never formed at all and by games end Prussia lost gp status to China and Japan
As far as I know not a single Great War was fought, the two biggest wars I was involved in was the 3rd Franco-Prussian War, which if GB didn't stab France in the back and invade Normandy would have been a Great War. and a war between Prussia and Austria
Bavaria formed the SGF, not Austria
The US took the liberty of annexing parts of modern Mexico
The 3rd Franco-Prussian war lowered French Millitary and prestige so much it nearly lost gp status, also Prussia decided to annex Brittany for no apparent reason as part of the peace settlement

I'd love to see a screenshot of that :)

Seconded!

Working on the new update now; should up be in a few minutes.

Chapter 13: Why was I so afraid of China again?

July 1, 1904: Let's take a peek at the Great Powers.

diplomaticstuff.jpg

Some fun facts. The UK is still mobilized because of the horrific threat Uruguay represents to their security. (Seriously.) If I had zero prestige, I'd still be a GP, but just barely. I'm really hurt by my lack of places to build factories more than anything. Other than that, no big surprises here (unless you count the tiny US army. Then again, the real US army wasn't very big before WWI either.)

July 8, 1904: Behaviorism is done. I start on Infiltration, both because I want tanks and because barrels are almost always profitable as a trade good.

October 1, 1904: The Radio invention fires.

November 23, 1904: Hedjaz insults me again, giving me the Cut down to Size CB. Seriously, what did I ever to do you, Hedjaz?

January 15, 1905: Election results!

electionof1905.jpg

If two of these liberal parties ever go defunct, I'll be in serious trouble.

January 17, 1905: CB acquired. China, Formosa shall be Dutch! (For 0 infamy; finally, some RNG luck!) I make the obvious invasions.

awesomeinvasionplan.jpg

invasionoftaiwan2.jpg

February 3, 1905: And the rest of the world just fouled their trousers.

dreadnoughttime.jpg

I start with nine in Europe, so I can evaluate their impact on my economy. I will build more: I promise that.

February 10, 1905: It amuses me to no end that the war against Uruguay is still going on.

March 8, 1905: Infiltration is finished. Next up: Army NCO Training.

March 18, 1905: My first victory in this war is sinking a Chinese transport fleet. 11 Clipper Transports are routed by 20 Steam Transports.

April 1, 1905: I can build Armor now; I start with three brigades.

April 10, 1905: Tainan falls; half of Formosa is in my grasp. I've got 1% war score for some blockading and Tainan. Time to get a bit more aggressive.

chinaisportugal.jpg

(If you're curious, Formosa is 9 war score.)

April 20, 1905: Hong Kong falls. This war is going so well, I'm going to add a second war goal (via justification).

April 28, 1905: Gauzhou falls to the Chinese Empire. I honestly don't care if they take territory; my goal is to hit their armies and occupy important areas.

May 3, 1905: Armies like this one.

feartheawesome.jpg

The only way this war would be more one-sided is if I had Guards in theater.

May 17, 1905: I call this the Napoleon method; going straight for their biggest armies.

dutchgonapoleon.jpg

May 22, 1905: Another big win for the Dutch.

shuntianbattle.jpg

June 4, 1905: Taibei falls.

June 5, 1905: Beijing just went under siege.

beijingwin.jpg

June 17, 1905: I'm friendly with Ethiopia now.

June 18, 1905: A big win in Hong Kong. I have more than enough war score to take Formosa; they've been trying to surrender, but I'm going to take Hong Kong too.

hongkongwin.jpg

June 21, 1905: China invades Atjeh. Sneaky!

July 7, 1905: I wipe out some more transports with my transports.

August 26, 1905: Some serious casualties in this one; highest war score I've seen from one battle.

hugevictory.jpg

August 28, 1905: Chinese expedition to Atjeh is defeated.

November 6, 1905: Time to add a new war goal.

mynewgoal.jpg

I also finish Army NCO Training and start Indirect Artillery Fire.

December 1, 1905: Fascism is founded in Switzerland.

January 16, 1906: Sweet victory.

chineseloseagain.jpg

I honestly feel guilty picking on China, and I've got what I wanted from them (for now). This will probably be my last war against the Chinese Empire.

February 15, 1906: Let's make the South Pole Dutch too.

June 8, 1906: My economy is still doing well, so I order 25 new Dreadnoughts, to be split roughly evenly between Africa and the Pacific.

July 5, 1906: With all the military techs researched, I start up Shift Work.

July 28, 1906: Botswana becomes a state. South Angola is next up.

August 10, 1906: The Ottomans are going after Egypt again.

August 13, 1906: The Netherlands now has every political reform in the game.

It's kind of an awkward place to end the update, I know, but there's a bit too much in the next chapter to jump into that. We'll stay here for now. There's one more update before I need to play again; my goal is to wait until next week (when I get my new video card and can start using my desktop again.) Expect the new update Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

Yay, eight more factory slots!

Seeing any possibility of getting the socialists uppity enough to get some Social Reforms going? The Netherlands without Health Care just feels wrong.

Low taxes? The more money people get, the more conservative they tend to be (IRL just as much as in AHD).

True; I could always increase taxes. I'll keep that in mind!

Why would losing some liberal parties hurt? I find its better to have the ideology you want in power concentrated in one party than having the vote split. I haven't had trouble on the liberal side, but often I have situations where the reactionaries end up in power because their 20% all goes to one party and the 45% conservative vote gets split between 3 conservative parties. Besides its not like you are a democracy and can't decide that you really prefer dealing with that nice liberal Mr Gladstone, even if he didn't get quite as many votes as the obnoxious tory toady Lord Beaconsfield.

I've had the exact same situation in a game when the UK was in a war with Uruguay. Eventually, I became fed up with the fact that the UK had a higher military score than I had because of the mobilisation and attacked Uruguay myself. I think I puppeted them, but rebels instantly undid that or something.

A lot depends on your voting system, true. It's not like I don't want the liberals in charge either; I'm just making an observation, that's all.

If I recall, the Netherlands has something like four or five liberal parties. I think you'll see one or two go defunct in the years to come. ;)

Fair enough.

I think Repay Debts, as a whole, is a pointless CB and should probably get disposed of. I've said that a few times now, but hey, there's no shame in repeating things over and over again, is there?

Speaking of repeating things over and over again:

Probably it should be reworked.
I've seen countries going bankrupt every two or three months (simply because they had to conduct war against anyone).

Repay debts makes sense only when the money that's owed to you is less than the cost of war - which means practically never. Although at times I've seen the AI use that CB as a stepping stone for complete annexation of small bankrupt states (even German ones, preventing Prussia from being able to form the NGF).

As for the file format debate, JPG is usually the way to go when there are lots of big pictures with lots of colours. But if you're dealing with pictures with large monochromatic surfaces and clear borders between colours (as in Subcontinental Subtleties) or with small (or red) text that needs to be legible on the screenshot, PNG is better. Also, GIFs are good for animations.

Good to know re: the file formats. Is it even proven you can make cash via loan interest? There doesn't seem to be any indication in-game.

I think your national bank makes money that way, but not you. Then that bank can lend more money to your capitalists, which is often a good thing, but I've never explored the details (which are, as you say, not directly indicated in-game).

Chapter 14: Cleaning up the borders

Note: I apologize in advance for this update; it's not terribly long or exciting. :) I'm going to play again this weekend, so hopefully the next update will be twice as awesome.

September 10, 1906: France declares war on Brazil again. I hope they fare better than the British have against mighty Uruguay.

November 22, 1906: Ottomans declare war on Egypt. So much for connecting the Suez Canal to the rest of my possessions.

January 2, 1907: Kumasi cores.

May 1, 1907: Shift work finished; next up is Bank Inspection Board.

May 28, 1907: We find Rubber in Palak Pinang.

July 30, 1907: The Ottomans get their hunks of Egypt. All that's left is Cairo and the state west of Khartoum. I think about grabbing Egypt, but my infamy is still too high (17+).

November 28, 1907: France gets another piece of Brazil.

January 9, 1908: The Russians realize how easy China is to beat now, so they start generating a CB.

January 28, 1908: Organizational development is my next tech.

May 22, 1908: Peru declares war on Brazil.

May 26, 1908: Time to build 9 more European dreadnoughts.

June 1, 1908: Russia DOWs China.

July 2, 1908: I change the NF in Vlaanderen from Liberal Loyalty to Encourage Electrical Industry.

July 27, 1908: Fourth Olympic Games.

August 4, 1908: I throw the UK out of Ethiopia.

December 1, 1908: Russia gets Manzhouli from China; the USA declares war on China the same day.

December 19, 1908: Time for a new tech: Government Interventionism.

January 30, 1909: A big Communist rebellion!

dutchcommunistrising.jpg

April 3, 1909: I'm finally under 15 infamy. However, I go after Ethiopia instead of Egypt, because I'm tired of my borders being so messy.

April 20, 1909: My infamy luck is gone. :( 9.1 this time.

July 6, 1909: With the reconquest of Mogadishu, the Communists are gone. (Sorry it wasn't very exciting; all the rebels were really spread out.)

July 15, 1909: Another election.

election1909.jpg

July 23, 1909: I start three brigades of armor and three of guards.

August 10, 1909: Afghanistan declares war on Bukkhara, for some very rare Central Asian consolidation.

October 3, 1909: Time to war!

October 13, 1909: My brilliant invasion plan.

ethiopiainvasion.jpg

October 23, 1909: Thanks to superior terrain, the Ethiopians aren't quite as easy to beat as the Chinese.

ethiopianarmybeaten.jpg

November 6, 1909: Market-Determined Exchange Rates is my next tech; I'm really just picking up spare techs at this point.

January 10, 1910: I call in Transvaal and Oranje to help with occupation.

February 10, 1910: Russia adds Bukkhara to their sphere of influence, but surprisingly don't intervene in their war with Afghanistan.

February 26, 1910: Jaisalmer westernizes.

March 20, 1910: We find Oil in Nizwa.

April 3, 1910: A few Ethiopians get caught and wiped out; they now have no army.

May 30, 1910: The Commies try to again; needless to say, they fail.

June 3, 1910: My very first social reform.

subsidies.jpg

Why Unemployment? Because the last thing I want my Craftsmen POPs to do is demote. My industry is just too small to get away with that. Health care and education will be next.

September 20, 1910: I start on the last Commerce tech I can research: Keynesian Economics.

October 13, 1910: Afghanistan bites off a couple of pieces of Bukkhara. Way to be a good sphere leader, Russia.

December 1, 1910: I can now build Synthetic Oil, which I don't need.

December 10, 1910: Ethiopia surrenders.

As a special bonus, here are the GPs -- I'm quite close to #2!

Unlucky with the 9.1 infamy hit, Hopefully this will not delay a final reckoning with Egypt for too long. You have done well to maintain such a high score given the difficulty of competing industrially with the other Great Powers.
