Not really. I wonder why so many people insist on using PNGs for AARs then?
I don't know who said PNGs were smaller, because that's pretty much never true. They do, however, look much better most of the time, especially with regard to color.
that's because png is lossless format, but jpg isn't... so in theory in png you see the picture the same way it appeared in the game and it actually has pretty good compression rate.
but I think you can use jpg's for the AAR's while the png pictures are clearly sharper etc, it doesn't change much in the end imo and if you're really bothered by the size difference... (btw how big the difference actually is? from my experience the png's have really good compression)

I haven't done a systematic comparison, but I'd say somewhere between 33% and 50% larger than a JPG; I'm more concerned about loading speeds for you folks.
Will you at any point pick up March of the Eagles and do an AAR of it?
Yes to both, almost certainly. If I buy it, changes are I'll do an AAR of it. The only PDS games I own and haven't done AARs for are CK I (don't bother with it, got it when I got CK 2), Darkest Hour (I'm not comfortable with the game yet), and Supreme Ruler: Cold War (no AARs on these forums.)
I would recommend using jpgs, png makes much larger files on average and in AARs with many pictures on one page, it can take a long time to load all on slower connections. Not all have super broadband like Western Europe after all.
From my own experience PNGs are anywhere from 10% to 150% bigger than JPGs.
Combine that with the fact that JPGs are actually horrible at displaying red colour, and I'd say the best thing is to look at it on a case-to-case basis.

Also a little OT: Maybe if I was not so dull and realized that the AAR in which Dead appeared had been written by you, I could win that contest! Grr.

That's not a fact. Jpeg is as good at displaying red, as any other color. That's a problem located in the converters and their configuration rather than the format itself. PNGs are almost anytime bigger than jpeg (maybe you get smaller files at really small resolutions, depending on the file-head you use), that's a matter of compression - jpeg compresses pictures with losses (==> some of the information gets lost), while PNG only lossless (by using dictionaries and similar algorithms).
As for AARs, it's almost anytime the better choice to get jpeg (if you're doing some highly artistic with your pictures, you might consider PNG or even TIFF instead) - you simply don't need that accuracy (unless, you're using a very harsh compression, one must zoom in to the pixel level to notice the artifacts).
Too bad you didn't get anything out of that Great War. The British probably surrendered to the French because they were so afraid of the Dutch crossing the channel.

I wish I'd gotten something out of it, but I didn't risk much either; just a bunch of old wooden ships I should probably have scrapped anyway. I'm sure there will be another, as the NGF seems really unlikely to let the whole Alsace-Lorraine thing go, for some reason.

Just caught up with this, very enjoyable AAR, you've done well in Africa.
Disappointing to see that the Great War concluded a little too early for you to capitalise, did France make any concrete gains? It will be interesting to see how resilient these alliances are, there is still time for another showdown!

Well my own Dutch game ended and Europe looked downright strange in 1936:
The NGF never formed at all and by games end Prussia lost gp status to China and Japan
As far as I know not a single Great War was fought, the two biggest wars I was involved in was the 3rd Franco-Prussian War, which if GB didn't stab France in the back and invade Normandy would have been a Great War. and a war between Prussia and Austria
Bavaria formed the SGF, not Austria
The US took the liberty of annexing parts of modern Mexico
The 3rd Franco-Prussian war lowered French Millitary and prestige so much it nearly lost gp status, also Prussia decided to annex Brittany for no apparent reason as part of the peace settlement
