It looks like you need the modifier witersrand_goldrush, but I can't figure out what causes that particular modifier.
Have you checked the event that turns the province to precious metal?

Western civilization; my actual field is 20th century Russian naval history, but my exams were in 19th and 20th century European history.
I generally find that history from around 1850 to present time is the most interesting as we're still dealing with decisions made when we weren't even born yet. But i'm a major history buff so that really doesn't count
But excellent AAR The Netherlands is a excellent country to play, it's close enough to major power status to make it fairly early, and yet still have to fight to be able to get into that "club". And they also have a lot of options with both expansion and also with wars, if you can get the right allies you can take out Belgium within the first 5-10 years, with will only help you in the long run

Chapter 6: Putting my name on the map (of Africa)
August 25, 1866: The UK starts justifying a CB against Portugal. Hey, Brits! I was justifying wars against Portugal before it was cool!
September 20, 1866: Our own CB is done, so we declare war on Portugal for Sena (there'll be a map of it later.)
October 1, 1866: The Holy Grail -- the Suez Canal is built! (Also, I choose Military-Industrial Complex.)
October 16, 1866: Hello, Italy!
October 26, 1866: Russia wants an alliance. I accept, if only to get two GPs on my side. (The other, if you recall, is the USA).
November 1, 1866: More army improvement; I have to maintain this edge in quality in case my neighbors get frisky.
November 9, 1866: O HAI PORTUGAL! :ninja:
If you haven't played much Vicky 2, going straight for the capital is the best solution about 99% of the time, especially if you want something worth minimal war score, like Sena (only 10 war score.)
December 8, 1866: A glorious victory, somewhat mitigated by the fact that Portugal had a pretty solid general (+3 defense).
January 16, 1867: The UK declares war on Portugal. Poseurs. I was briefly alarmed they might want Sena too; instead, they want Bombay. You're welcome to it.
February 3, 1867: Lisbon falls, Portugal sues for peace, everybody's happy (except Portugal.)
This opens up a decent chunk of eastern Africa for me; my eventual goal here is to hem in Portugal.
March 15, 1867: I switch from Clergy in Gelderland to Clergy in Dutch Wallonie.
April 10, 1867: More improvements to the army.
May 28, 1867: I move some troops to speed up colonization in the Sena Region (I don't yet own).
July 12, 1867: The UK beats Portugal and gets Bombay.
November 17, 1867: I get a Humiliate CB against the UK; yeah, I'll pass on that.
December 14, 1867: My economy is humming along nicely -- I cut taxes on the poor to a mere 50% (instead of 100%).
January 1, 1868: I start Iron Muzzle-loaded Artillery (no screenshot, sorry). I'm keeping a close eye on my techs and not doing anything too challenging.
February 25, 1868: Ottomans declare war on Egypt.
March 13, 1868: My doltish explorers get lost. I pay them another £2000 to keep going.
June 2, 1868: Sena is colonized. I shall continue onward in east Africa!
June 18, 1868: Burma civilizes; I make even better artillery.
July 14, 1868: An Oranje Revolution and more colonizing (I took off one of the Clergy NFs).
I start influencing Oranje; I'm resigned to a mere sphering of South Africa for now.
January 3, 1869: Everybody
January 15, 1869: The Conservatives maintain power. No surprise there. I'm not going back to the Liberals just yet.
February 18, 1869: One more tech -- early railroad because a) it's cheap, b) it's useful and c) it gives capitalists something to do.
March 17, 1869: Spain is incredibly late to the party -- they justify an Acquire State CB against Portugal.
April 16, 1869: The Ottomans take Aleppo from Egypt. I briefly consider expanding in Egypt, but I honestly have what I want from Egypt.
May 24, 1869: Sweden is the new #8 GP; I've still got a more than 100 point lead on them.
Friendly with Oranje.
June 18, 1869: I get another NF point (which I just now notice -- I've had it since May). MOAR COLONIZING!
July 17, 1869: I'm on the map on two of the three continents I'm on -- the one exception is Europe.
I finish a colony at this point (you can see it in the map above), so I switch to bureaucrats in Java. It's useful, but not life altering. It's more of a placeholder NF until Machine Guns are done.
August 1, 1869: I finish Early Railroad and then start... nothing. I'm going to gather RPs until Machine Guns is available in January 1870.
September 14, 1869: Revolution in Paraguay.
January 1, 1870: It's time.
January 20, 1870: Revolution in Brazil. This is of mild concern, since they're my ally, but only mild.
April 16, 1870: Instead, Oranje is my ally. I'm not sure if that's an improvement or not. They're also sphered.
April 28, 1870: The source of the Nile is Dutch!
August 28, 1870: Machine Guns is done. Let's colonize more, shall we?
All my NFs are now colonizing; I intend to use one in SE Asia and three in Africa until I cut off west and south Africa. Here's my new tech:
September 20, 1870: Zambia's done. I start in East Angola (I'll show you Africa again later.)
December 4, 1870: Well. Communism starts...

IIRC, the old troops present bonus for colonising has been reinstated so go nuts colonising Africa! If I were you, I'd put a regiment in Borneo before the US or France decides to go for East Papua and one in Ghana to snap up as much of West Africa before the French move in there.
Also, go Burma.
