A Republic in Liguria. A Genoa AAR. Part VII
In June 1526 the vile Venetians captured Adana from the Ak Koyunlu, however that didn't strengthen them. In the end of August that year the Habsburgs inherited Bohemia, and in December war broke out between them and France, when Poland, an ally of Austria, declared war on Hungary, an ally of France. Poland and Austria was supported by their other allies, Bavaria, Hessen and Würzburg, while the Hungarians and the French had their allies Wurtemberg, Münster and Saxony.
As France and Austria were busy in the north we took this oppurtunity to peacefully annex Naples, and in the war in the north Würzburg was annexed by Wurtemberg that however soon was defeated by the Austrians, and had to give up the conquered province and become a vassal. So in June 1528 the French convinced their vassals in Strassburg to join them in the war, but that was overshadowed by the great news that the inhabitants in Thrace had abandoned their heretical ways and become true catholics
Thrace is catholic
In the 23rd day of July 1528 the war in the north ended as Poland paid a tribute to Hungary and ceded the province of Ruthenia. As that year neared its end Bulgaria declared independence from Albania not only with the province of Bulgaria, but with the province of Dobrudja as well. In October that year Ottariano de Campofregoso died and Oberto Cattaneo became our new Doge. Not much happened during Oberto's time as Doge, only a new center of trade was established in Anglia, and so in 1531 Battista Spinola became the new Doge.
In July the Knights, who now were vassals to Spain and based in Malta, although they still had Rhodes and Antalya, decided to declare war on Albania. We came to the defence of our allies and the Knights lost many naval encounters. In September Bulgaria had been defeated and they gave up Dobrudja to the Papal States.
In 1533 Battista Lomellino became Doge but he didn't last long and in 1535 Cristoforo Grimaldi became Doge. In March that year Albania signed peace with the Knights and paid them a large tribute. Considering that the Knights were defeated in almost every naval battle and unable to move their men away from their island strongholds. This caused a political crisis, and in June the following year the Pope went to war on Hungary, which now stood alone and was being divided by its neighbours. Poland had retaken Ruthenia, Serbia had been conquered by Bavaria, and southwestern Hungary was held by Austria.
It was in the end of 1536 that Doge Cristoforo went mad and he was quickly deposed and in January 1537 Giovanni Doria became our Doge. One month after that the Hungarians ceded Croatia and Pest to Austria In December 1538 volunteers joined our navy which now recieved five additional galleys.
Giovanni Doria was Doge for two years and in 1539 Andrea Giustiniani became Doge. Peace with Hungary was recieved in September when they ceded Wallachia to Albania, and in July 1540 Johan Zapolya died and Hungary was promptly annexed by Austria.
