I'd suggest forming an alliance with the Austrians or the French. In my opinion they're about to collide like two trains on one track. You might benefit from that collision and pick something for yourself.

Like the way you're telling the story. just brilliant man. :)

Interesting.... very interesting.... I'm hooked (and yes, it's that easy! :D )

Can't wait to see which way Genoa jumps next.... I'd lean toward more control of Italia, but then again, I'm a freak for controlling territory to gain a bigger power base.

Just a thought, but what's the possibility of expanding your territories in the Black Sea area? I mean, Georgia does need to be punished for its audacity, does it not?

A Republic in Liguria. A Genoa AAR. Part VI

Although there was much discussion about the Venetian aggression, nothing was done for in may 1502 the Papal States declared war on Milan, a war which Tuscany gained the most from as their army in Mantua led by Machiavelli marsched to the west and laid siege to Milan. In the first month of 1503 Milan fell to the Tuscan troops, and was soon annexed by Tuscany. In the following month the Bulgarians declared themselves independent from the oppressive Austrians, but a mere month later the Bulgarian "government" collapsed. Three years later the anarchy in Bulgaria ended when Serbia annexed it.

It was in 1506 that Paolo da Nova became Doge. During his short time as Doge Bulgaria was annexed by Serbia, as has already been told, enthusiasm for the navy gave us five new warships, and in October the Austrians, who together with their Bavarian and Bohemian allies had overrun Hungary, signed a peace were the Hungarians had to cede the provinces of Presburg, Odenburg, Krain and Transylvania.

In 1507 Rodolphe de Lannoy became Doge. Genoa was at peace, but outside our borders war raged. In July 1509 the Knights lost control of Morea which defected to Albania, which in November signed a peace with Serbia, gaining the province Bulgaria and Serbia as a vassal. Barely a year later Serbia was annexed by Hungary.

Giano Maria Fregoso became our new Doge in the 30th of June 1512, and in april the following year Naples became our vassal. In the 21st day of June that year we recieved a new Doge, Ottoriano di Campofregosi, and in his time as Doge two important events happened. In July 1513 the treaty of Tordesillas was signed, dividing the new world between Spain and Portugal. That Portugal was not de facto independent, but a part of Spain, was of little consideration. In March 1517 the Reformation occured, and since you all know what that is there is no use to retell it here, the only thing to be said about it was that Genoa wasn't affected by it.

In March 1521 our alliance increased in size as we convinced Albania to join it. In June the following year Admiral (since 1513) Frederigo Fregoso died and left Grand Admiral (since 1520) Andrea Doria to have complete control of the Fleet of Genoa, stationed in Macedonia.

Seems a tad too quiet lately. Perhaps the addition of Albania into the alliance will get some action started against the Turks. Plenty of Black Sea provinces just screaming to be ruled by the endless stream of Doges. ;)

I agree, the Italian boot needs the guidance of Genoa... or actually, just annexed by Genoa to make things easier! :D

I'm currently being quiet mostly because of France. They have a permanent CB (because I own Apulia) on me and relations are -130 or something like that and a letter of introduction cost around 60 ducats. When they lose their shields in Italy I will begin to move again. However since the reformation has happened I may now invade Egypt, which I will not do until after I reach land tech level 11. :)

A Republic in Liguria. A Genoa AAR. Part VII

In June 1526 the vile Venetians captured Adana from the Ak Koyunlu, however that didn't strengthen them. In the end of August that year the Habsburgs inherited Bohemia, and in December war broke out between them and France, when Poland, an ally of Austria, declared war on Hungary, an ally of France. Poland and Austria was supported by their other allies, Bavaria, Hessen and Würzburg, while the Hungarians and the French had their allies Wurtemberg, Münster and Saxony.

As France and Austria were busy in the north we took this oppurtunity to peacefully annex Naples, and in the war in the north Würzburg was annexed by Wurtemberg that however soon was defeated by the Austrians, and had to give up the conquered province and become a vassal. So in June 1528 the French convinced their vassals in Strassburg to join them in the war, but that was overshadowed by the great news that the inhabitants in Thrace had abandoned their heretical ways and become true catholics

1j88pv

Thrace is catholic

In the 23rd day of July 1528 the war in the north ended as Poland paid a tribute to Hungary and ceded the province of Ruthenia. As that year neared its end Bulgaria declared independence from Albania not only with the province of Bulgaria, but with the province of Dobrudja as well. In October that year Ottariano de Campofregoso died and Oberto Cattaneo became our new Doge. Not much happened during Oberto's time as Doge, only a new center of trade was established in Anglia, and so in 1531 Battista Spinola became the new Doge.

In July the Knights, who now were vassals to Spain and based in Malta, although they still had Rhodes and Antalya, decided to declare war on Albania. We came to the defence of our allies and the Knights lost many naval encounters. In September Bulgaria had been defeated and they gave up Dobrudja to the Papal States.

In 1533 Battista Lomellino became Doge but he didn't last long and in 1535 Cristoforo Grimaldi became Doge. In March that year Albania signed peace with the Knights and paid them a large tribute. Considering that the Knights were defeated in almost every naval battle and unable to move their men away from their island strongholds. This caused a political crisis, and in June the following year the Pope went to war on Hungary, which now stood alone and was being divided by its neighbours. Poland had retaken Ruthenia, Serbia had been conquered by Bavaria, and southwestern Hungary was held by Austria.

It was in the end of 1536 that Doge Cristoforo went mad and he was quickly deposed and in January 1537 Giovanni Doria became our Doge. One month after that the Hungarians ceded Croatia and Pest to Austria In December 1538 volunteers joined our navy which now recieved five additional galleys.

Giovanni Doria was Doge for two years and in 1539 Andrea Giustiniani became Doge. Peace with Hungary was recieved in September when they ceded Wallachia to Albania, and in July 1540 Johan Zapolya died and Hungary was promptly annexed by Austria.

Luckily I (and my allies*) have good relation with the White Blob. And Spain. And my allies* have good relations with France, mine are not so good but improving.

* Except possibly Albania, I'm unsure of what relations they have with the three big countries (Great White Blob, France & Spain)

A Republic in Liguria. A Genoa AAR. Part VIII

In August 1540 the evil Venetians declared war on our ally Albania, and all of Italy joined Albania in the war against Venice. It was in the first days of the following year that Leonardo Catteneo became our new Doge, and under his leadership a trade embargo was enacted against Venice, and when Ionia fell to our troops in December, the Venetians signed peace with Albania paying a rather sizeable tribute and giving up their remaining Aegean possessions to us.

In 1543 Andrea Centurione became Doge, and during his reign news came in from Mamluk Egypt of a civil war. During the reign of Doge Giovanni Fornari between 1545-1547 Genoa prospered thanks to good government policies.

In 1547, the year that Benedetto Gentile became our Doge, Tuscany declared war on Venice in March and we joined our allies in the war against the cruel and arrogant Venetians and their Bulgarian allies. In May Turnovgrad was captured and Bulgaria removed from the war as they became our vassals and their former army besieging Wallachia was made part of the Genoan army, and in August Bulgaria joined our alliance. In 1548 we heard news of some Jean Calvin, however since this didn't affect us in any noticeable way, no action was taken except a firm stance against the heretics.

In 1549 Gaspari Grimaldi became our Doge, and in February that year Venice gained peace with our allies by paying a large tribute and giving the ownership of Dalmatia to Tuscany. We however remained at war with Venice until the last days of 1550 when they agreed to cede Crete to us.

Eastern Mediterranean

In 1551 Luca Spinola became our new doge, and in August he lifted the trade embargo against Venice. In March of 1552 we signed a trade agreement with France and in 1553 Giacomo Promontorio became our new Doge, and he was soon followed by Agostino Pinelli who became Doge in 1555. Two years later, in 1557, Pietro Chiavica became our new Doge, and in September that year fortification efforts were made on the Aegean islands.

Aye, go for encouraging Venice to become a member of your glorious realm. They might agree given the proper advise (be annexed or be razed to the ground! :D ).
