This is my first attempt of an AAR, so don't mind me if I don't get everything right :eek:o In fact, I'd really appreciate constructive criticism.

A Race Against Time

Dutch Preparation for the German Invasion

First, a brief overview of the politics, research and espionage.

29586444.png
Oddly, a nazi is HoG, while Hendricus Colijn should be. Oh well, let's just pretend it never happened, and the masses shall never know the shady people that have power 'behind the curtains'
22359208.png

'Ah!' Colijn sighed as a brown envelope was brought to him by a postman, which left immediatly thereafter.
The mail he was waiting for. He opened the envelope, and put its content on his desk. Some progress on the new weaponry he had ordered.

He looked at the picture of the test-unit, equipped with the new rifles,
and knew that alot more work had to be done to be able to resist the German warmachine.
After taking a cup of tea, he reviewed the drawings of the modified British rifle the scientists at the Hembrug plant had developed.
It looked heavy, and not practical. Again he thought to himself about the loads of work that had to be done.

He checked some papers regarding the industry of the nation, seeing his recent decision to stop all naval construction.
Even though the Dutch had been known for their powerful navy for hundreds of years,
Colijn knew that ships would not stop a German invasion of the Netherlands.
Instead he ordered large scale production of supplies, anticipating the great amount of soldiers that would be called to arms, once the
armament industry had produced modern weaponry for those soldiers.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

He had also put up a propaganda campaign to increase the national unity,
which would be very much needed for the ever-lurking German aggresor. Since he had enough people working on that now, he ordered efforts to be focused on the recruiting of officers.
The propaganda campaign previously set up came in useful here,
the patriottism previously called upon for unity,
could now be used for the drafting of officers for the army.

He looked at the statistics, and realised that with this rate of recruitment, less than four officers would be drawn into the army each day.
The propaganda had less effect than he had hoped.
Nonetheless all bits would be needed for the mobilization he had hoped for, and so he ordered the campaign to be continued
About this time he also devised his plan to decomission most of the Dutch navy, disarming them and selling them to wealthy civilians.
Not only could this boost the government's budget a bit, it would also free up sailors which could be trained to serve as regular infantry.
Wondering about other means of getting more soldiers for the front-line,
he thought of the divisions in the Dutch colony Indonesia.
If he would give the Indonesians a certain sense of 'independence', those divisions would not be needed there to keep peace,
and instead be transported back to the homeland, to hold off the Germans.
It was risky, but the risk of losing the Dutch colonies was small,
and the risk of German invasion big.
He had already ordered the Dutch aerial forces in Indonesia to fly back to the Netherlands.
Sipping some more tea, he decided to let this rest until tomorrow.

Hmm.. I've chosen a bit of a bad time to start an AAR. Should I restart in 1.3 vanilla? Since the Netherlands aren't really effected by the Unique Units Mod, and I've only just started it, it shouldn't be too hard to pretty much imitate what I've done so far. Opinions?

Well, I decided to restart in 1.3, but you can hardly notice.

The Return Home and Sinterklaas Bears Armour-Piercing Presents
By Mid October it was decided that the divisions in the Dutch East Indies would be withdrawn from the Orient to defend the homeland.
The men that returned home were all professional soldiers, not draftees,
and were larger than the divisions that were already at the border.
The Indonesians were under the impression that they had at last recieved
an independent government, though in reality the Dutch still pulled the ropes.
They were not entirely off, as the Dutch meddled less and less in overseas affairs, too buisy with their own troubles.

After returning home, the hierarchy of units was renamed to their proper duties,
and assigned to the proper High Command.
This boosted Colijn's spirit a bit, but not much.
Colijn became more worried by the day, and by December 1938 had decided to start building obsolete AT cannons, as a desperate measure to give the divisions, which hadn't yet recieved any new weapons, a bigger shield against the well-oiled German armoured first.
Eight anti-tank regiments were in training, one for every province bordering Germany.

Colijn wanted to assess their current situation, and asked for an accurate map of the country's defences.
Chief of Staff Adriaan Dijxhoorn explained:
'These are our troops at the Dutch-German Border.
Each province has four infantry regiments, and those are divided into two divisions.
In May we will recieve eight anti-tank regiments, which will be divided between one division in each province.
If our lines are broken, we will retreat to the blue line here.'

'Oh, and one other thing' Van Dijxhoorn added.
'We've finished developing some new weaponry'
He showed some photographs and drawings, and Colijn got a little more confidence in the whole thing.

WAR!

But not for us yet, however.
Germany has declared war on Poland after it refused to surrender Danzig to to Germany.
Because of this, the Allies are now at war with Germany.
75897994.png

We have a really, really big problem now, Colijn thought to himself.
The Germans would probably attack the Low Countries very soon.
After little more than a week, Colijn ordered full mobilisation.

may13.png

Since the Anti-Tank Regiments were trained and deployed, the free industrial capacity was used to make more rifles and other weaponry
for the new recruits, coming in from all over the country.
The orders came in to block all roads coming from Germany.
Trees were blown up over the roads, so that they would block any trucks or tanks coming in from there.

The General in command of the current Dutch field army, Generaal Hasselman, was replaced by Berenschot.
General Hasselman was a genius with logistics, but did not have any special skills in combat.
General Berenschot had learned defensive tactics, and so he was appointed.

WAR!

And this time, its on US!
On 11:00 August 2, 1939 the German aggressor declared war on our nation.
waraug2.png

warradd1.png

After three hours the first attacks began on the area surrounding Venlo. Field Marshal Winkelman, commander of the entire Dutch military, showed a small map of the first attacks on Dutch troops to Prime Minister Colijn, and he knew the Dutch troops wouldn´t be able to hold a position with such thinly spread and horribly armed forces. The relentless German air attacks made matters even worse.
59289281.png

After watching the attack go on for an hour, he ordered a full retreat of the entire border, hoping to preserve the rest of the soldiers,
which would be more useful in larger concentrations in defensive lines further into the country. Perhaps they could even be rearmed with some newer M95 rifles, since these weren't even widely available yet. Since January, General Berenschot had developed a new secondary defensive line,
which was less thin spread and more forward than the previous one, devised by General Hasselman.
92089784.png

Colijn could see that this was a much stronger line, and the probing attacks of the Germans proved that it was indeed alot harder to breach.
Instead of four infantry regiments and one AT regiment each, the provinces now had ten infantry regiments and two or three AT regiments at their disposal, along with the headquarters of several Corps and the Dutch Field Command. However, if the Belgian border was breached, it would be a entirely different case. After a long meeting with Field Marshal Winkelman, General Berenschot had taken the decision that if the German threat would also come from the Belgian border, they would retreat to North-Holland, an area comprising of only four to six provinces. Under all circumstances was the Port of Amsterdam (David Bowie, anyone?) to be held, to keep open the horrible option of abandoning the entire Dutch mainland.
22700783.png

With the German attack on the North, through Groningen, Friesland and then the Afsluitdijk or the Wadden Islands, not yet having commenced, he decided to keep that front unmanned for the time being..

Uhh...you really screwed up IMO. The best way to defend Holland would have been to conform to Allied plans rather then to simply defend Holland. By giving up Maasricht the Germans can now outflank you and Belgium (unless you have units in Belgium that I couldn't see and in that case you're doing fine). IMO if you just held Zeeland and mantained contact with France and Belgium when the offensive stalled, you would be succesful. In your case you might hold most of Holland but if Belgium falls you're done.
