A Question of Fates
Untrustworthy
1854-1856

Desperate times called for desperate measures. After our dragged out war with Brazil, in which the Russians did nothing, our empire settled into months of peace. An alliance conference was held in our great capital, Brussels. However, the Russian diplomat was not invited.

11954.jpg

On a 2-0 vote, Russia was disbanded from the Anglo-Flemish alliance.

A whole year passed since the disbanding of Russia from the Anglo-Flemish alliance when our peace treaty with The Netherlands ended. Dutch troops gathered along our borders, but did nothing. As long as the United Kingdom was on our side, we and not the Dutch would chose the times we fought.

The years of 1854 and 1855 passed with no bangs, no shots of gunfire around the civilized world. Although, the British did declare a colonial war on China, in hopes of gaining additional lands. Our country, led by King Philip Schnack of Denmark -- a replacement of the now defunct King Leopold the I, stayed out of the Far East. Although resources that could benefit our empire laid there, our military would be incapable of sparing the troops for an offensive, and then the inevitable defense.

Massive revolts still remained across the Middle East, cocentrated in the dieing Ottoman Empire and the uncivilized country of Persia.

10255.jpg

A view of Africa and parts of the Middle East.

The British colonial in China proved a disaster for the British regulars. At first, only 10,000 regulars were stationed in Hong Kong when 90,000 Chinese, assited by 10,000 Russians soldiers and a Russian general began a siege of the city. Five thousand six hundred and forty-three British regulars were taken prisoner, the rest were killed. The British quickly re-took the port of Hong Kong while troops from India marched into the far western, more unguarded provinces of China.

51456.jpg

The colonial war in China.

The Empire's Safety
The French, the not-so-aggressive enemy to the south of our home country, the east of Belgian Morocco, and west of Belgian Brazil, was a concern. As long as the French held a colony in South America, Belgian Brazil would be in easy striking range. On July 6th, 1856 a diplomat reached Paris and negoitiated the handover of the French provinces in South America to Belgian control.

11366.jpg

The South American deal. (Comment after AAR update)

Two years after the termination of the Anglo-Flemish-Russian alliance, Russia found itself at war with two great powers. Russia had declared war on the Ottoman Empire, while Prussia declared war on Russia. The war was known as the Crimean War. The majority of Europe -- United Kingdom, Austria-Hungary, and France, remained neutral in this war. The time had come for Belgium to decide it's fate.

82956.jpg

The Crimean War.

Our enemies were weak, our forces were numbered. A quick strike would be the beginning of the end for our enemies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although I lost 30 prestige from the deal with the French about their South American provinces (they have statehood). I considered the deal a good trade. These provinces produced timber. If I could obtain these two provinces, I could convert a few of my timber works in Belgium to clerks and craftsmen to further my industrial power.

P.S. Don't mind those accidental additions on the screenshots. I just noticed them after posting.

Thanks for reading, enjoy.

Decide it's fate?
Do you mean Russia's fate?
Surely you have simply managed to avoid becoming part of the Crimean war?
Or have your troops received their extra-large winter boots lately?

Belgium is deciding it's fate in Europe, and the world. Maybe there are plans with Russia, or not. I disbanded our alliance with Russia to avoid entering the Crimean War. UK, Austria-Hungary and France remained neutral in the conflict.

A Question of Fates
The Deciding Fator
1856-1858

It had been a few months since the beginning of the Crimean War, and the Russian Empire holding back the Prussians and the Ottomans. And so Belgium was doing good, it's plans were moving forward. Our placement of troops had gone unnoticed by all of Europe, well except the Netherlands.

And so on September 29th, 1856, our diplomat in Berlin presented a declartion of war aganist Prussia and the German states.

92956.jpg

WAR!

According to our intelligence, the Prussians had a grand total of zero troops along our borders. We had 120,000 soldiers, Prussia had atleast three times our number, if not more. We would have to act fast.

10256.jpg

The intial advance into Prussia. Objective: Koln.

After the month of fighting, a few Prussian, and other German divsions were seen marching towards the front...the Eastern Front. In December though, our first encounter with German soldiers began.

121956.jpg

Our objective Koln is under siege. Meanwhile a Belgian divsion, 10,000 men is forced to retreat.

The end of 1856 came with our objective Koln in our possesion. Our warscore was going up, along with Prussia's war exhaustion. Russia, our unoffical ally in this war, was doing good. Really good infact.

8025.jpg

Russian advance into Prussia as of February 3rd, 1857.

Austria-Hungary had remained neutral in the Crimean War, which was good for Russia. However, Austria-Hungary honored it's defense pact with Prussia and came to their aid. No Austrian divsions were ever seen on the Western Front. And we came to wonder why...

51957.jpg

British India invades Austria-Hungary...and is failing.

Although British India's invasion of Austria-Hungary was failing an idea was sparked. Two German states, Oldenburg and Bremen were along the coast. These two German states had joined the war aganist Belgium and the United Kingdom. Our ships were quickly dispered and loaded with British lent divsions.

Sent with British Royal Navy escorts, our ships were spotted off the coasts of Oldenburg.

71757.jpg

The Belgian invasion of Oldenburg begins! Notice the nice British Royal Navy, and the Belgian Royal Navy of Transportation.

Our invasion of Oldenburg had failed to draw off any German troops from our occupied border with Prussia. Our objective had been clear, we would capture Koln and attempt to hold the surronding area. However this objective came difficult as additional German divsions marched towards the Western Front. On September 6th a general retreat order was issued to the entire Koln sector of the Western Front. Our defensive positions in Belgium would serve as the next line.

9657.jpg

The general retreat in the Koln sector.

Although the advance into Koln, and the eventual capture of Koln was a victory, we as an empire had nothing to show for it. Except a lot of dead bodies, atleast they were mostly German dead bodies. Oldenburg had been fully occupied, with British lent troops headed towards Bremen.

After a few days of diplomatic discussions, Oldenburg surrended. The terms were simple. Agree to be annexed.

102257.jpg

Oldenburg accepts the terms of surrender, October 22nd, 1857.

The winter months of 1857 and early 1858 proved to be extremly cold. Our defensive line on the Flemish-German border proved to be unbreakable. Our diplomats were sent to Berlin, along with request to meet the Austrian diplomats there.

On January 10th, 1858 a peace treaty was signed between the German states, Prussia, Austria-Hungary, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Bremen was to be annexed by our empire, Oldenburg was recongized as Belgian property, while the rest of the agreement was to return to status quo.

11058.jpg

The peace treaties.

But the war was not over! Our plans called for immediate action to further secure our dominance in European affairs. Hannover had been freeded a few years earlier by the British, and had failed to secure additional alliances.

The diplomats weren't even sent... On February 8th, 1858...

8609.jpg

War declared with Hannover.

With the British lent troops stationed in the Oldenburg and Bremen the immediate invasion of Hannover began. Sixty-thousand British troops aganist 20,000 troops of Hannover.

31058.jpg

The situation in Hannover, March 10th, 1858.

Any resistance was quickly dealt with as British troops marched ontowards Hannover. Our quick war was nearing an ended as Hannover intiated a peace treaty, agreeing to give it's two most western provinces near Oldenburg to Belgium. The deal was rejected, but our peace offer of these two provinces and war payments was accepted. Immediate industrialization of these new provinces began. Our population had broke the 8 million mark, with a few hundred thousand German clerks and crafstmen now looking for work. Plus, another fish province had been secured.

72558.jpg

The peace treaty with Hannover.

We were in the control of our own fate, not Prussia, not Austria-Hungary, but us. The war had proven we could handle the vast power of Prussia, forcing the annextation of two German states. What was next for the Belgian Empire?

A Question of Fates
The Debate
Brussels, Belgium. Royal Palace of King Philip Schnack the First. The year is 1857, after the war with Hannover.

One often wonders why the European powers felt the need to expand their influence through the world. In essence it is a mission to 'civilize' the rest of the world according to European standards. To spread the faith of Christianity to the 'pagans'. However matters were differnt in the Belgian court. Our mission was not to civilize the world, but rather to conquer it through diplomacy, war, trade, and science

Although the Belgian military was small, our advances were far fetched -- or so we thought. Technically we had yet to lose a war, but we had lost several battles.

"Your highness," said a royal advisor. "Our European territories are only connected by the sea! We must unite these provinces with the home country. If I may so kindly suggest another war with the Dutch?"

"Another war with the Dutch!" shouted the military advisor in rage. "Are you so ignornat young one? This great country would not exist if it were not for the great power of the United Kingdom! The Dutch were on the very verge of defeating our rebellion," the general paused, smelling the fear within the young one.

"Our second war with the Dutch was in our favor beacuse we caught them off-guard! Do you suggest we, with our already thinned military attack an numerically superior enemy?"

"Former President George Washington once said, and I quote: 'You do not have to win the battle to win the war," end quote," said King Philip Schnack. The royal advisor looked at the king who had stayed quite until then, the military advisor knew what his highness was thinking.

"The matter shall debated later. The people grow tired of war, their exhaustion raises every day, and so does our badboy," continued the King after a pause.

"Our badboy?" asked the royal advisor.

"Good night gentlemen," King Philip Schnack said, retiring to his quarters along with his wife, Queen Rachel Schnack of the Belgian state of Vlaadern.

A Question of Fates
Arguementative
1859-1864

The year of 1859 saw amazing events unfold upon the face of Europe. Since the days of proceeding the fall of the Rome, the Italian lands had never been unified. Several European nations had taken refuge, or laid claims upon the land, and finally, after nearly fourteen hundred years, Italy was created by Saradina-Piedmont.

5240.jpg

Italy, March 3rd, 1859.

In July of 1859 Belgium again was in the spotlight of the world.

72659.jpg

A public museum opened up, bringing several world renowed scientist to Brussels to marvel at the work. But it was all a ploy. Meanwhile, while the world governments -- mostly the Europeans -- marveled at our progress, 6 new infantry divsions were being trained.

123059.jpg

Six new infantry divsions being trained.

Six months later, June 30th, 1860, the six infantry divsions were completed and deployed in Brussels and Brugge, a few days march from either the French or Dutch border.

63060.jpg

Three of the six infantry divsions shown.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Royal Palace of King Philip Schnack

"My highness," said the general. "The military is ready for your great plans."

"Very well, the declaration of war is signed. Go after the Netherlands," Philip replied, really not caring what country they'd go after.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
81460.jpg

August 14th, 1860. War is declared upon the Netherlands.

The war with The Netherlands is swift and not worth mentioning, for it wasn't even mentioned in the home newspapers! After a brief three months of fighting, the Dutch capital fell and a peace treaty was quickly drawn up. The only mention of the war back home was: "VICTORY!"

7790.jpg

The home country after the Second Belgian-Dutch War.

Although we were unable to retrive the two provinces we wanted from the Dutch, Rotterdam and Utrecht, peace negoations allowed for the Flemish purchase of these lands.

The years of 1862 and 1863 came and passed in a blink of an eye. No major worldly events happened. No local events happened, but somehow the world existed with nothing to report, well except the annextation of a country named Madagascar by the French.

The year of 1864 was looking like the same as 1862 and 1863, no events. Until one day....

71464.jpg

A peace conference held in Brussels.

...an utterly pointless peace conference (fourth one) was held in Brussels. The conference was used as a ploy as another 6 divsions, this time dragoons, were trained.

The year of 1864 ended in utter, blissful peace. The great nations of the world stood silent. Maybe Belgium had brought around the age of peacefulness? Or maybe King Philip Schnack schemed of eviler plots.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry if this update seems rushed, and unentertainining. This part of the game was relatively boring. About as fun as waiting on a girl to hurry the hell up because her hair isn't done being blow dried.

Better updates later, WITH EVENTFUL years.

A Question of Fates
The Question of Hannover
1865-1870

In April of 1865 the Latin Monetary Union was created and Belgium joined the Union. In June, we bought the Spanish claim of Ifni from them for 1700 pounds, and organized factories, in exchange for one of our non-essential claims in Africa. The rest of 1865 was uneventual.

The year of our lord, 1866, would prove quite differntly. The War for German Leadership, who would lead the German states? Prussia? Or Austria-Hungary?

12066.jpg

The outbreak of the War for German Leadership.

Our interests were in this war, if Prussia won, hopes for a united Germany would increase. If Austria-Hungary won, hopes for a united Germany under Austria-Hungary would increase. Our decisions had to be made fast.

And thus on February 23rd, 1866, the Belgian Empire declared war on Hannover for the second time.

22366.jpg

Map of Europe, 1866.

Little resistance was encountered through-out the majority of the campaign. On March 23rd, the outcome for Hannover looked quite grim.

32366.jpg

Belgian conquests, March 1866.

By August of 1866, the last of Hannover's military had been trapped in a small province of Osnabrüek.

82566.jpg

The battle deciding Hannover's fate.

By November of 1866 the battle of Usnabrüek was over, and Hannover accepted unconditional surrender. All provinces, except the city of Hannover were to be annexed by Belgium. Hannover would become a satellite of Belgium. In December, we sold the southern province of Gottingen to Prussia for 27,300 pounds.

In 1867 the War for German Leadership was still going on. Prussia had annexed a few of the German minors allied with Austria-Hungary and Bavaria, and was marching into Austria-Hungary. Italy, Prussia's ally marched from the South.

5211.jpg

The war map of The War for German Leadership.

The War for German Leadership ended with a peace treaty returning Prussia and Austria-Hungary to status quo. Meanwhile, Italy annexed the provinces of Verona and Padua.

The rest of 1867 to 1870 went by undocumented, because no eventful thing happened in the world. Except for the fact more on the United States of America became slave states, a thing the Belgian Empire opposed.

A Question of Fates
The Unification(Part I)
1870

In June of 1870, France declared war on Prussia, a causing being the Spanish throne possibly going to a member of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family, a branch of the ruling house of Prussia. France asked us to honor our military alliance and declare war on Prussia. We had already been at war with Prussia before, if it was not for our quick movement, the war would of been a defeat for us.

6470.jpg

France asks us to honor the alliance.

Prussian troops were already marching along our border towards France. If we declared war on Prussia, no gains would be made. Our forces were already spread thin enough across our expansive border with Prussia.

So on June 5th, 1870 King Philip Schnack the First sent his reply back to France. Instead of recieving a welcoming reply on Belgium honoring France's request, France recieved a declaration of war. Belgium, with it's unoffical Prussian ally, were going to war aganist France.

6570.jpg

The first phase of the assualt by Belgium.

Our border with France was unprotected by any reasonable amount of French troops. By August 15th, Cambrai, Lille, and Dunkerque had fallen to us. Our troops were siegeing Amiens, Arras, marching towards Laon, and Charleville. A small French force, estimated at 10,000 soldiers, tried to march into Luxembourg, only to be greeted by 12,000 of Belgium's finest.

71570.jpg

The advance into France as of August 15th, 1870.

September 24th marked the beginning of the Belgium Battle for Paris. Sixty-thousand of Belgium's finest marched into a lightly defended Paris. Twenty-thousand French troops marched upon the city, only to find enemy soldiers already near the city. A divsion of troops was sent along the coast of the English Channel, liberating Rouen, while 36,000 of Belgian's finest defended additional territory. The war in Africa was a war not worthy of mentioning. Twenty-four thousand soldiers aganist a force thrice their numbers, the French were slowly marching upon our colonies.

92470.jpg

Battle of Paris, September 24th, 1870.

During this time, Prussia managed to get involved in a war aganist Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire. Prussia was taking the majority of Northern Austria, while Italy, Prussia's ally was dominating in Southern France while losing parts of Northern Italy.

Belgium's greatest moment came on November 11th, 1870. Paris, the French capitol was occupied. French troops were in retreat across the nation, as an unstoppable Belgium marched further southwards. King Philip Schnack the First signed a leant treaty with France. France would be allowed to keep it's colonies, while ceding over Dunkerque, Lille, Arras and Cambrai to Belgium.

A Question of Fates
The Unification(Part II)
1871-1875

With our new borders secured, events across Europe would be the major focul points of the world.

6414.jpg

Prussia's war for German unification. Advances into France deepen. Prussia, North German Federation, Bavaria and Italy vs. Austria-Hungary, France and Russia.

42171.jpg

German advances into France, Prussia at this time only has about 40,000 troops in France, most are off fighting in Russia or Austria-Hungary.

6415.jpg

Italian advances into Southern France. Italy holds back any further Austro-Hungarian invasions.

82071.jpg

Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy, and the German people return to status quo. Additional advances are made into France.

Meanwhile, 96,000 Dutch troops defend Netherlands. To their south, 12,000 of Belgium's finest in Large Redouts (Level 2 forts).

122071.jpg

Reason why France is losing the Franco-Prussian War.

12372.jpg

Additional Prussian advances into France. Notice, Paris is captured.

Our greatest fears occured on January 27th, 1872. The German states were finally united.

12772.jpg

The founding of Germany.

Luckily, 1872 passed with no war between Germany and the Belgian Empire. Our colonial ambtions continued. Egypt became a civlized nation. The Ottoman Empire and Egypt constantly eyed each other. Meanwhile, diplomats from the Belgian Empire were sent to the Ottoman capital of Istanbul.

6416.jpg

Various colonial claims in Africa. Belgium holds the majority of claims on the Congo.

In 1874, Flemish diplomats arrived in Cairo to discuss a diplomatic deal with the Egyptian government. The Belgian Empire did not offically recongize Ethopia as part of the great Egyptian Empire. In exchange for one of the coastal provinces of Ethopia, Belgium would guarentee the independence of Egypt, along with sharing industrial technologies.

42374.jpg

Our new colony (acutally a state) in Ethopia.

Six divsions were to be trained, these new troops would become the I. Ethopian Corps, the II. Ethopian Corps, and the III. Ethopian Corps, each consisting of 24,000 soldiers.

Nice for that peace treaty with France. First time i see someone asked 99% of 'things' with just so little warscore. Anyway though, wish you could shrink those screenies a bit. With the server lagging, took me quite a while to load all those screenies with a broadband connection.

Nice AAR though. :)

Yup,

good going - I really like the name change for Osnabruck - must be a Belgian re-naming frenzy going on!

You would appear to be worried about Germany - and since you hold a few German cores, you have every right to be worried. Could I suggest making friends with Russia? Or are they weaker than Germany?

Also, it looks like the French could really use a transport navy..

Sorry for no updates for awhile. Been quite busy.

Aye, Germany is a threat. Russia is on par-with Germany. Russia has beat the Ottoman Empire in a few wars, and stalled in wars with Germany/Prussia.

The Italians prove to be aggressive, working on relations with them. France doesn't seem to be really interested in the affairs of the Belgian Empire, and most likely wants to see us crumble.

Only time can tell.

A Question of Fates
New Conquests
1875-1877

With the acquring of a foothold on modern-day Ethopia, the Belgian Empire seeked to further it's expansion. With our lines already stretched thin, an army couldn't be spared. The invasion of Ethopia would be delayed until Africans could be trained to fight.

After months of training, the invasion began to take foot. Three Belgian Armies, consisting of 24,000 soldiers each marched into parts of Eygpt.

Additional Africans were being trained in the now world known Belgian Military tactics. Three divsions, numbering 36,000 soliders, were trained in the art of warefare on horseback and began a march towards the capital of the Eygptian Empire.

By August of 1875, a year after gaining the foothold in Ethopia, the Belgian Empire and concluded it's latest war. Eygpt would allow the Belgian Empire to control Ethopia, and take it's claims of the Somaili land, which soon became a Belgian colony.

The year of 1876 saw the Serbians fighting for independence from the Ottoman Turks, the Great Powers of Europe forced a peace treaty returning the nations to status quo, and granting Serbia it's independence.

In September of 1876, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the German Empire went to war again. The Germans brought in their long-time ally, the Italian Empire -- whom had not asked for Belgian Empire's help.

The beginning of the war.

The war wasn't going so good for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from what our spies, and Italian allies were telling us. The German Empire was a force to be fearing. As long as the Germans took differnt land and not our land, it was okay.

A new war broke out in May of 1877, the Russian Empire, along with the civlized Persian Empire had declared war upon the Ottoman Empire, who's independence was guarenteed by France.

In August of 1877, the German Empire signed a peace agreement with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Troppen was handed over to the German Empire, meanwhile the Italians kept on fighting.

A Question of Fates
Troubling Times
1877-1880

The Ottoman Turks were having some deep troubles with the Russian horde. The Russians were a roughly two hundred miles from Istanbul, while the entire eastern front of the Ottoman Empire was collapsing. Better yet, The French were no where in sight.

111377.jpg

The situtation as of November 13th, 1877.

The Italian and Austro-Hungarian War was a unbearably slow event. The Italians were advancing but at a terrible cost to both sides. By May of 1878 the war hardly looked as if any advances had been made, yet some had, as evident by this map provided by our Italian friends.

52178.jpg

The Italian and Austro-Hungarian War.

For the first time in many years, the United Kingdom had let our military alliance end, without any chance for renewal. Had our fate been answered? Was the most powerful nation in the world going to declare war and march into our very cities and destroy them?

Our neutral stance over the last few years had paid off however, the French had allied us. Together we formed a nearly unstoppable alliance, well, except for the fact that the French had lost several wars.

Later in 1878, our resolve would be tested. On October 28th, 1878, the German Empire declared war on the French. The French asked us to honor our agreement and declare war on the German Empire. This time there would be no betrayl of the French on our part.

102878.jpg

The French request for our Declartion of War on Germany.

Combined, our military might matched that of the German Empire. The Germans would prove a worthy foe for our military. Instead of waiting for the Germans to advance onto our soil, we would advance into theirs.

11678.jpg

The invasion of Germany!

The Germans had key weakness in their defense, miles upon miles of their border was unprotected and would prove very easy to exploit. While other parts of their borders had 10,000 to 20,000 soliders defending.

12478.jpg

Few months after the beginning of the war.

The war only lasted a few months, before the Germans quickly came to the bargaining table. The Germans, although claiming victory in this war, were truly defeated. Within two month, the Belgian armies could of laid siege to Berlin. Germany, under the pressure of further defeat of it's 'grand armies', accepted to pay the Belgian Empire war indentimities.

A Question of Fates
Expansion at What Cost?
1880-1882

We grew suspicous of the French claims in Northern Africa, although there was a small military presence there. After several months of improving our relationship between the German Empire, and a proposed miltary alliance, a declaration of war was sent to Paris, France. The Belgian and German Empires were tired of the French.

6680.jpg

War map, June 6th, 1880.

With Paris less than 100 miles away, a forced double march was opposed on 50,000 Belgian soldiers after the Battle of Amiens. The French Army was ill-prepared to fight this war intially. The occupation of Paris came without a single shot being fired to defend the capital city.

7780.jpg

The war map in Europe, July 7th, 1880.

A loyal population of Germans had been raised over the years and recruited into the military service. These Germans would find themselves in the deserts of Northern Africa, fighting to gain France's colonial holdings.

The war map in North Africa, November 20th, 1880.

January 14th, 1881 the Russian Empire declared war aganist the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Russia's allies, Romania and Persia joined the fight.

11481.jpg

The face of war, January 14th, 1881.

Within less than a year, on May 15th, 1881. The government in the temporary capital city of Bordeuax declared peace with the Belgian Empire. Half of France's holdings in in North Africa would become Belgian Algeris. France was also to recongize the Belgian claims in North Africa as part Belgian Algeris. France was to demilitarize itself after the conclusion of the war with the German Empire.

51581.jpg

May 15th, 1881.

With the war still going on with Germany, the French military began to make several mistakes. It's fortification line along the border with Germany, once occupied had suddenly been deserted. Thousands of Germans quickly marched across the undefended border on their way to Paris.

81981.jpg

The situation as of August 19th, 1881.

On January 6th, 1882. Our final claim had been completed on Belgian West Africa. Several African nations laid to the south, even further south where the British colonies along the Ivory Coast.

10336.jpg

The map of Africa, January 6th, 1882.

The Belgian Empire would eventually conquer these African nations, the Italians took over Ottoman controlled Liyba. The British taking over Egypt, the rest of French Algeris falling into Belgium hands. Belgian Congo would be created. In all, Belgium went from an upstart nation at the beginning of 1836, to a world class super power by the the turn of the century. In 1900, the Belgian Empire's population sparked to 61 million people. The Belgian Royal Navy (BRN), matched that of Englands.

Top-of-the-line rail systems spread across the Empire. Belgian Morrocco was granted statehood in 1899. The Netherlands ceased to exist in 1889, offically becoming part of the Belgian Empire. The provinces captured from Brazil were eventually relased back to Brazil's control in 1902.

In 1909, the final chapter in Belgium's history closed. King Leopold II, the second king of Belgium from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, died.
