Industrialization made Euroep heavily dependent on food import from the Americas and the Antipodes. In EU2 access to grain is necessary to mainatin troops.

Just wonder how this will be handled.

The capital that financed the cattle breeding in the American West was British - with a profit of as much as 25 pct on an individual herd driven from Texas to Kansas.

Another interesting question is whether food will be diversified into groups, such as grains and fruits. The Russian Empire can easily provide for itself with livestock and grains, but would have very small amounts of fruits from within the borders.

Also, for the more industrial side, I wonder if food processing and canneries will be in. Something like food is almost completely necessary to give rotw countries the cash generating export to Europe that they will use to purchase manufactured goods.

Well, depends what you're looking for. Russia does not have exotic fruit but I think they have their own range of Fruit berries and vegetable.......
That would not make them an exporter of fruit but at that time those were usually for local consumption and exotic fruit remained a luxury until fairly recently.

I agree introducing various sorts of food would a nice idea. The basic categories categories would be Grain, meat/fish, Fruit /vegetable.

The changes in agriculture and in the food industries were very much part of that time. Fishing was an important industry and there was the apparition of canned food and refrigeration which had a massive impact on society. By the way, there will be something about whale fishing or seal hunting which were rather important inportant industries.

EU2 did no take that asprct into account while famines where common throughout the time frame of the Game. In the XIXth century those gradually disappear from Europe though there were still many exemples.

I didn't mean to come across that they could not be self-sufficient with local species, however as you say that they would not have significant surplus for export and would need to import things like oranges, etc. This being in contrast to cereals where they certainly would and did have enough to export.

I like the idea of including food in the economic framework - on the one hand, it is essential to model the economies of South America & how they fit particularly into the informal British Empire, & on the other hand, a German player would probably want the ability to "starve" the British into submission by intercepting food convoys in a major war.

"a German player would probably want the ability to "starve" the British into submission by intercepting food convoys in a major war." That would be neat! But since they couldn´t solve the naval blockade problem in HOI where it should have been critical to solve it I don´t think it will be in Victoria either.

I guess the main problem is that it is too easy to cripple the AI with these kinds of blockades. Once the AI senses it is going to have a problem it starts building transports...and nothing but transports.

You are so right on the money, Generalissimo.. :D I have the faith.
I just woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning.
I think Paradox have learned so much about game making in the last couple of years that Victoria will blow our minds!

I don't think that fruit was a major export.
It was mainly grain and meat.
Without refridgeration they would get to bad before they get to the destination.

Around ww1.
Until that ice was a huge export for Norway and Sweden to the breweries in the UK and Belgium.
Ice was needed to make lager beer.

We don't, but we do have more harbors in convenient places.
