And with that, a new installment in the peaceful development of Prussia the great.
1625
Annual taxes bring treasury to 471D. In New Prussia we continue our explorations in the south.
In February; the land of Nippon closes its doors to the west and we lose a valuable source of investment income (that’s 83D per year gone for us). With only the Yanam centre now of any significance in the region where we can compete, it seems clear to me that our continued wealth is tied strongly to the trading centre of Havana. This will only be achieved by expanding our trading establishments in the region. We also order increased fortifications for the city.
Our valiance explorer Moltke discovers the province of Rio Grande. He decides that the 500 local natives will be of little us for our plans in the region.
In spring news arrives that Charles has become the new king of England. Our diplomatic efforts towards England ensure continuity in our relations. Traders are sent to North America and Moltke continues his discoveries adding the provinces of Matagorda and Bayou to his already impressive list of new lands. The natives in the region are relocated with the exception of those who choose to stand and fight against us.
By mid-summer, our generals now announce that our armies are fully trained and equipped for land exploration. They now turn their efforts to develop weapons which they are calling muskets although after seeing their first tests I decide to leave them to work alone on the project. These weapons will never be any use to us.
We send a trader to Athabaska and discover the lands of Biloxi. Moltke takes a liking to one of the Biloxi squaws and, in a fit of clemency, decides against having her tribe relocated. Perhaps regretting this decision he is a little more conscientious of his duty when he arrives in the province of Yazoo.
By the end of the year, our naval commanders have managed to impress on the king the great deficiency we suffer in naval development. More investments are directed to improving our developments in this field.
1626
65D tax income.
In early spring, Georg Friedrich that Prussia must have a presence in India. The province of Cochin in unoccupied so we send a trading party. A perilous venture and one destined to failure but we are forced trust in the better judgement of our monarch in sending such a small inexperienced group of men to such a distance corner of the world.
War breaks out in Europe with Poland (Spain, Oman, Teutonic Order) declaring war on Turkey (Wallachia, Navarra, Tunisia, Crimea, Georgia, Iraq). We are neutral in these matters and secretly hope that the two armies will destroy each other.
Moltke finally arrives in Seminole in the summer and stays to rest in the province leaving Scharnhorst to take 5600 troop further south. In the north Elde discovers the province of Chino and a trading party is sent.
In October news arrive from our courageous group of traders that have succeeded in placing the Prussian flag in Cochin. Most assuredly this is a message from the Almighty that the lands in the south of India have been chosen for Prussia to claim.
1627
As tax income brings our treasury to 770D a review of our financial position is made. We now have several pressing objectives. The two clearest of the king’s wishes are that Seminole and Cochin are expanded to city status, a process that will take up to 10 years. As a trading post, Cochin is vulnerable and must be expanded to a colony at the earliest opportunity. Another objective is to complete our enclosure of the discovered lands to the west and for this, the trading post in Chino must be completed and two more must be set up in the south. (Game note: I now know why this plan might not work

)
Our colonies in the west now make us the leading supplier of furs in the world. This is a fine achievement for a nation of our origins and a great tribute to our endeavours.
The king is also keen to establish colonies in the south of the North American continent for, it is from here that we will be able to launch any future attacks on Spain to the south. Yazoo and Arkansas are designated as the southernmost points at which we shall establish our domains to limit Dutch incursions into our northern realms. To complete the link, Illinois and Bayou must also be settled.
The priority though is settled as being Cochin. After that Yazoo, Arkansas, Bayou and Illinois but we will first need to establish which of these we are able to settle. The cost of settlement also will not be small and will exceed 300D per year. Merchant costs can also be expected for up to 60D per year and so 25D per month will need to be directed to treasury to fund this expansive program.
We also plan that, when our loan matures next year, to raise two loans to fund a second refinery, the position of which has still to be determined.
Moltke is sent to Bayou to oversee the arrival of the first group of settlers in the province.
A merchant sent to Yanam but only managed to breaks England’s monopoly of the trade(to +125). As the CoT is now full we must now be content with a lower monthly income.
In April a stolid group of settlers are sent to Cochin. We offer to Brandenburg the protection of our mighty armies. Curiously, they reject our generous offer (+198 to +168). We decide to raise an additional 8000 infantry in Eastern Pomerania, Western Prussia and Danzig for protective purposes only. Even if they do not want our protection, we shall offer it anyway.
Our trading post in Chino is established in May cutting off any routes for explorers from the north to gain access to the interior.
In June we send a letter to Brandenburg to try to explain away any misunderstanding about our earlier offer (+168 to +189). We raise a further 5000 in Europe to demonstrate the sincerity of our earlier offer.
In August, Elde demonstrates just how effective a leader he is. On discovering Winisk he is attacked by the local natives but, after demonstrating our superior firepower, loses over 500 of his men to a small group of 18 braves.
Our first Indian colony in Cochin is established before the end of the year.
1628
The year was one of continued colonisation, of investment and of diplomacy.
When our bank loan expires in August, we raise two loans to repay the first and to fund the building of a new refinery in Western Prussia. Now our finances must be organised to ensure full repayment of the second loan in 5 years. With treasury funds of 360D and annual income of 65D, we will need a further 315D from monthly income of 6D per month.
We can estimate that one settler group and one trading party might be sent out each year at a cost of around 180D per year. In addition, we can allow 60D of costs for merchants. Our total monthly costs will therefore need to be 26D to treasury.
Our alliance expires and we ask to continue this with England (+141), Netherlands (+178) and Brandenburg (+200). We make an approach to the Indian nation of Mysore but they refuse (-116) so instead turn to Hanover (+60) to complete our alliance. Action must be taken to improve relations with Mysore as our colony in Cochin is vulnerable to attack Mysore. A letter is sent later and relations improve (-117 to –101) when we explain to them who we are.
1629
In Spring we celebrate royal ties with the United Provinces.(+193) but almost within the week England declares war again on Scotland. All of our allies support England. Portugal declares for Scotland. England asks for our support but this could put at risk our colony in Cochin, which has no Prussian forces nearby to protect it. The subcontinent itself is dotted with Portuguese, French and Dutch trading posts in addition to one Navarran province. However, England has four fully grown colonies in the area and force in the province of Kutch. Unfortunately, the nearest ships that the Englsih have are believed to be far away from India which would be unable to help the plight of our countrymen.
On the African coast lie two Portuguese colonies and some of their fleet. It is these that give us greatest cause for concern. To the south of these lies a lightly fortified Dutch colony. The Dutch also are known to have many ships in the region which ought to be able to fire a few Portuguese trading posts.
One option we do possess would be to take the war to Portugal in South America but, on the king is opposed to this because of the great distances involved and the potential losses we would suffer are too high. Although this could gain us a foothold in South America, our decision to concentrate on North America makes this an additional distraction that we do not wish at this time. We nevertheless honour our alliance partners and raise 3000 troops in Havana for protective purposes.
