Well I've been told to wait 24 hours so sorry if it's still not working. And don't get too worried since I'm hardly in walking distance from Paris or Madrid yet. Just 75% of the known world above the Tordesillas line (and a tasty CoT in Havana  ).

Perhaps, after another 100 years I will have a world more liberally dappled with the battle-grey of Prussia.

Bloomfield's own AAR. "Letters of insult-'r'-us". Think of the storyline "The king of France is challenged to a duel but the limp-wristed garlic-eating merchant-cum-poet hasn't the courage to face up on the field of honour" :D

On money, merchants and colonisation

It is the year of our lord 1620. Our lord Georg Freidrich is the new king of Prussia and its overseas territories. Our lands stretch from Kurland in the North to Eastern Pomerania and Western Prussia in the west. In North America we own 34 provinces of which 7 are fully fledged cities and a further 9 are growing colonies

The king is a man of a military background and is keen to see action. However, his character is not so one-sided as to be motivated purely by war for his possesses remarkable diplomatic skills. Perhaps for this reason, he has elected myself, Count Neustein as his new chancellor being more astute in financial matters and therefore best able to complement the skills of himself.

Which brings me to the subject of my predecessor. His record will show his as a man driven by the twin evils of power and fear. The latter was clearest in his attitude to Spain, for long the most powerful country in Europe and yet a power that we can now see to be on the wane. After successive wars against Poland, the ex-chancellor clearly held no regard for the military power of our neighbour and this failing very nearly brought us to ruin in our previous war.

It is on financial matters that I shall begin since this that is our most immediate concern. The expansive policies of the past decades have left us in debt to the tune of 2000D. Spain’s trade embargo of our country is clearly causing us some losses but to go to war in this financial position would be foolhardy. We must therefore aim to reduce our debts in the coming years.

Our main financial investments over the next years will be the colonisation of a few of our vulnerable trading posts near the coast and on the Iroquois border. These can be expected to cost around 250-300D per annum. In addition the protection of important trading monopolies in China and Japan might add a further 50-70D per annum. Between them, these will account for monthly costs of 25-30D.

Our census taxes bring in around 60D per annum. With existing funds of 177D in treasury and loans due in around 42 months, we will need to raise around 650D from monthly income in this period or 16D per month. In order to be safe, we must therefore ensure that around 45D of monthly income is available to treasury. The rest will be left for investment in technology.

1620

The Baltic fleet carrying Moltke is travels to Penobscot where he hopes to explore lands to the north. In the first half of the year, a trading post is set up in Megantic.

In July there is much rejoicing as we open our refinery in Memel. It is a well established fact that the ability to manufacture alcoholic beverages helps significantly in trade negotiations.

Moltkle in Penobscot and takes his band of 600 men to Megantic to meet up with the main part of his exploration force. Once there, he takes a force of 6000 into unknown lands while his younger brother remains behind with 3000. To mark our explorations, a group of colonists travel to the lands of Erie in October although funds of 160D are needed to come from treasury. Moltke discover a region he names Shewinigan and is attacked by a small group of wild natives.

In December we need to send a merchant to Edo while our trading post in Alleghany in expanded..

1621

Philip IV is crowned king of Spain and is selected as the Holy Roman Emperor. A quick review of treasury reveals that funds are now 533D showing a healthy rise from the pitiful state these were in last year’s balance.

Moltke a new region called Laurentia and sends word that it might be a suitable place for us to establish a trading post. His force drives away around 400 natives in the region before returning south.

In March a merchant is sent to Tianjin for costs of 26D

In April, Moltke discovers Hochelaga and a group of traders are sent costing us 16D in funds. Diplomatic activity takes precedence in Spring with the arrangements for the marriage of one of the court beauties to some unbearable Count in France (+8). We also managed to trade discoveries with England gaining knowledge of 36 provinces for 75 of which we know. A second merchant is sent to Tianjin after the previous one went missing.

By June, Moltke has discovered Ottawa and is attacked by 600 natives. Over 50 of his men are lost in the fighting but the natives are quelled. England also appear to be interested in gaining these new lands as a trading party is seen heading to Laurentia.

Moltke discovers the province of Nipissing and establishes finally that the lands beyond the Iroquois give no western access to the China seas but are instead a series of huge inland seas.

Our attempt to colonise Erie fails and the Dutch are quick to grab the land with a trading party. Traders are instead sent to Ottawa and Moltke discovers Nipigon

Our trading party to Hochelaga trading post fails in November and we receive a request from England to share explorations. On recollection of their petty-mindedness in earlier circumstance we politely decline.

Moltke discovers Athabaska in December. He also discovers that the natives are peaceable and that it is very cold. With limited scope for living of the land he is forced to return to Nipigon.

1522:

How wise it was of the young king to appoint a financial man to run the affairs of state. The profligate manner of my predecessor still leaves us in debt but funds have now risen to now over 1000D. Colonial expeditions have reduced costs as much of our colonisation has been in form of trading posts. With new lands this will continue to be the case so we are able to reduce the diversion of funds to treasury to a mere 10D per month..

Spring arrives and Moltke is able to return to Athabaska after losing 1000 men to the terrible conditions. This time the natives attack and are killed. The English and Dutch trade posts to Launrentia and Erie fail. England are quick to send traders to both. We send one to Hochelaga and a merchant is sent to Edo in February

Moltke continues his discoveries with the lands of Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth. His forces are attacked in the first of these but remain unmolested in the other two (600 and 400 natives resp. with medium aggression). Our trading post in Ottawa is successful. By the end of the year he had discovered Sault (500 agg 6).

We send a trading party to Athabaska and the English set up their own in Eire but fail in Laurentia.

In summer we send another merchant to Tianjin.

The year ends with news that Russia has declared war on Sibir.

1523

Funds now 1164D so one of our loan is almost certain to be paid off

A new centre of trade has opened in Yanam. The region is so valuable in trade that we immediately commission 6 merchants to the provinces at a cost of 41D each. This brings funds to below 1000D so we are forced to divert 30D to treasury each month to meet the loans in July.

Moltke discover Oskosh and attacked by 400 natives he now heads south to link up with further forces. We gain a valuable monopoly in Yanam which will generate almost 500D per year. Our finances are now in a very healthy state.

Another merchant is sent to Edo in March while a trader is sent to Oskosh.

Moltke discovers Fox and with a combined force of 11000 men begins his exploration of the south.

In may, our naval commanders announce the introduction of the galeass (Naval Tech 8). They now start work developing something called a compass and believe that this instrument will be of valuable use in sea voyages. Unfortunately, they do not expect to have a working model for another 19 years.

Our tries with Brandenburg are strengthened further by court marriage (+198)

In June, our trade post delegation is disrupted on its way to Athabaska while the English have not set up one in Hochelaga and settled Erie. Moltke has now discovered Miamis and decides that the natives are not to his liking. Those who agree are relocated.

Our monopoly in Yanam is broken by the English in July. Another merchant is immediately sent to protect income of almost 40D per month.

In August, one of our bank loans is repaid. Looking at investment costs, it would take 1360D to build another refinery so this cannot be done with just one more loan. Within 5 years, we will have enough from annual taxes to cover the extra allowing us to build another refinery. Monthly income is needed to protect trade and with keen competition in Yanam, these will be a lot higher. Whether we can risk a trade war with England remains to be seen but we will assume for now that trading and mercantile costs will be around 250D per year. Monthly income put to 20D.

Continues to discover the new world with the province of Illinois and then crosses a mighty river to the west. Blucher now takes on the task of clearing the other regions of natives

1624

Tax income 67D.

The year brings further discoveries in the lans of Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, Wichita, Concho and Pecos. It is at this line where we shall divide the new world with Spain

In wars, Persia cedes Bulgaria to Turkey and Sibir loses the territories of Alga and Irgiz to Russia.

Aaarrrggggh!!! I bloody saw that but failed to edit

But credit where due. Who else has managed to discover Superior and capture a monopoly in Yanam worth over 1000D by 1523?

OK I give up. What do you guys think I'm doing wrong with the screenshots? From what I can see, the naming convention is fine except that one of the images has a filename with a blank space which might cause problems with the North America image but wouldn't explain the European one.

The original download was in bitmap and I can't seem to find any easy way to convert these to jpg files (Neither Paint nor Imaging programs seem to want to let me save these files in that format). But I assume that this is just a minor time-saving device and won't explain the main problem.

Interesting. I just compared your file pointers against one from Robertos AAR (he uses Gen.Suvurovs services too) and they match up. His works but yours doesn't. Perhaps the good General could be of help.

As for converting .bmp to .jpg I use a freeware program called Lviewpro.

I read your great AAR, very nice work. The problem with screenshots is that you have uploaded a double extension file, your file had .bmp.bmp for its extension and the script doesn't recongnize that. If you can please reupload your file using a single .bmp as extension. Sorry for the problem, but since everything is automatic I didn't notice this problem for quite some time. Just reupload and everything will work fine.

And with that, a new installment in the peaceful development of Prussia the great.

1625

Annual taxes bring treasury to 471D. In New Prussia we continue our explorations in the south.

In February; the land of Nippon closes its doors to the west and we lose a valuable source of investment income (that’s 83D per year gone for us). With only the Yanam centre now of any significance in the region where we can compete, it seems clear to me that our continued wealth is tied strongly to the trading centre of Havana. This will only be achieved by expanding our trading establishments in the region. We also order increased fortifications for the city.

Our valiance explorer Moltke discovers the province of Rio Grande. He decides that the 500 local natives will be of little us for our plans in the region.

In spring news arrives that Charles has become the new king of England. Our diplomatic efforts towards England ensure continuity in our relations. Traders are sent to North America and Moltke continues his discoveries adding the provinces of Matagorda and Bayou to his already impressive list of new lands. The natives in the region are relocated with the exception of those who choose to stand and fight against us.

By mid-summer, our generals now announce that our armies are fully trained and equipped for land exploration. They now turn their efforts to develop weapons which they are calling muskets although after seeing their first tests I decide to leave them to work alone on the project. These weapons will never be any use to us.

We send a trader to Athabaska and discover the lands of Biloxi. Moltke takes a liking to one of the Biloxi squaws and, in a fit of clemency, decides against having her tribe relocated. Perhaps regretting this decision he is a little more conscientious of his duty when he arrives in the province of Yazoo.

By the end of the year, our naval commanders have managed to impress on the king the great deficiency we suffer in naval development. More investments are directed to improving our developments in this field.

1626

65D tax income.

In early spring, Georg Friedrich that Prussia must have a presence in India. The province of Cochin in unoccupied so we send a trading party. A perilous venture and one destined to failure but we are forced trust in the better judgement of our monarch in sending such a small inexperienced group of men to such a distance corner of the world.

War breaks out in Europe with Poland (Spain, Oman, Teutonic Order) declaring war on Turkey (Wallachia, Navarra, Tunisia, Crimea, Georgia, Iraq). We are neutral in these matters and secretly hope that the two armies will destroy each other.

Moltke finally arrives in Seminole in the summer and stays to rest in the province leaving Scharnhorst to take 5600 troop further south. In the north Elde discovers the province of Chino and a trading party is sent.

In October news arrive from our courageous group of traders that have succeeded in placing the Prussian flag in Cochin. Most assuredly this is a message from the Almighty that the lands in the south of India have been chosen for Prussia to claim.

1627

As tax income brings our treasury to 770D a review of our financial position is made. We now have several pressing objectives. The two clearest of the king’s wishes are that Seminole and Cochin are expanded to city status, a process that will take up to 10 years. As a trading post, Cochin is vulnerable and must be expanded to a colony at the earliest opportunity. Another objective is to complete our enclosure of the discovered lands to the west and for this, the trading post in Chino must be completed and two more must be set up in the south. (Game note: I now know why this plan might not work ;) )

Our colonies in the west now make us the leading supplier of furs in the world. This is a fine achievement for a nation of our origins and a great tribute to our endeavours.

The king is also keen to establish colonies in the south of the North American continent for, it is from here that we will be able to launch any future attacks on Spain to the south. Yazoo and Arkansas are designated as the southernmost points at which we shall establish our domains to limit Dutch incursions into our northern realms. To complete the link, Illinois and Bayou must also be settled.

The priority though is settled as being Cochin. After that Yazoo, Arkansas, Bayou and Illinois but we will first need to establish which of these we are able to settle. The cost of settlement also will not be small and will exceed 300D per year. Merchant costs can also be expected for up to 60D per year and so 25D per month will need to be directed to treasury to fund this expansive program.

We also plan that, when our loan matures next year, to raise two loans to fund a second refinery, the position of which has still to be determined.

Moltke is sent to Bayou to oversee the arrival of the first group of settlers in the province.

A merchant sent to Yanam but only managed to breaks England’s monopoly of the trade(to +125). As the CoT is now full we must now be content with a lower monthly income.

In April a stolid group of settlers are sent to Cochin. We offer to Brandenburg the protection of our mighty armies. Curiously, they reject our generous offer (+198 to +168). We decide to raise an additional 8000 infantry in Eastern Pomerania, Western Prussia and Danzig for protective purposes only. Even if they do not want our protection, we shall offer it anyway.

Our trading post in Chino is established in May cutting off any routes for explorers from the north to gain access to the interior.

In June we send a letter to Brandenburg to try to explain away any misunderstanding about our earlier offer (+168 to +189). We raise a further 5000 in Europe to demonstrate the sincerity of our earlier offer.

In August, Elde demonstrates just how effective a leader he is. On discovering Winisk he is attacked by the local natives but, after demonstrating our superior firepower, loses over 500 of his men to a small group of 18 braves.

Our first Indian colony in Cochin is established before the end of the year.

1628

The year was one of continued colonisation, of investment and of diplomacy.

When our bank loan expires in August, we raise two loans to repay the first and to fund the building of a new refinery in Western Prussia. Now our finances must be organised to ensure full repayment of the second loan in 5 years. With treasury funds of 360D and annual income of 65D, we will need a further 315D from monthly income of 6D per month.

We can estimate that one settler group and one trading party might be sent out each year at a cost of around 180D per year. In addition, we can allow 60D of costs for merchants. Our total monthly costs will therefore need to be 26D to treasury.

Our alliance expires and we ask to continue this with England (+141), Netherlands (+178) and Brandenburg (+200). We make an approach to the Indian nation of Mysore but they refuse (-116) so instead turn to Hanover (+60) to complete our alliance. Action must be taken to improve relations with Mysore as our colony in Cochin is vulnerable to attack Mysore. A letter is sent later and relations improve (-117 to –101) when we explain to them who we are.

1629

In Spring we celebrate royal ties with the United Provinces.(+193) but almost within the week England declares war again on Scotland. All of our allies support England. Portugal declares for Scotland. England asks for our support but this could put at risk our colony in Cochin, which has no Prussian forces nearby to protect it. The subcontinent itself is dotted with Portuguese, French and Dutch trading posts in addition to one Navarran province. However, England has four fully grown colonies in the area and force in the province of Kutch. Unfortunately, the nearest ships that the Englsih have are believed to be far away from India which would be unable to help the plight of our countrymen.

On the African coast lie two Portuguese colonies and some of their fleet. It is these that give us greatest cause for concern. To the south of these lies a lightly fortified Dutch colony. The Dutch also are known to have many ships in the region which ought to be able to fire a few Portuguese trading posts.

One option we do possess would be to take the war to Portugal in South America but, on the king is opposed to this because of the great distances involved and the potential losses we would suffer are too high. Although this could gain us a foothold in South America, our decision to concentrate on North America makes this an additional distraction that we do not wish at this time. We nevertheless honour our alliance partners and raise 3000 troops in Havana for protective purposes.

Great AAR, having lots of fun reading it, had problems with the first links to the screenshots, then I saw the later ones. As I can see and read you have yourself a pretty big patch inside America, maybe its time to learn a bit of german.

I'm also very pleased with your way of writing its interesting and fun.

As a war man I can say that it is time that the might and strength of the Prussian Army, and their revolutionary system of Obligatory Military Service, start to work in the European Theatre like a Clock. Some of the Scandinavians should feel the heat of your steel.

Well I'm not really sure that I want to take on the Swedes since they should have too many good commanders at this point in the game. What's more my Baltic navy is so weak as to make it rather pointless to invade anywhere that I can't reach on foot.

Lots of land in North America? Ha! It's just a small patch of land at the moment but since it's the easiest place to grab land, it's where I'm going to concentrate for the moment.

Of course there's always India but it's such a pain having half a dozen new neighbours to deal with and no way of sending anything there by sea - too far.

Might post a bit more just before the weekend but thinking of expanding on the early days before this one goes much further.
