I was reading Maq's thread about how to make peacetime more enjoyable when I thought of this and I originally posted it there, but then decided that maybe this was worth a post as an independent thread instead.
The idea is wholly based around religion as it is in the game currently. Like at present there's only a base religion and once your country is converted to that one you spend years doing effectively nothing more with it, just putting down rebels here and there and zealots from other religions whilst converting them. Occasionally heretical ideas will take hold in a province and cause unrest, but there's nothing really major about that.
I think maybe not early game but definitely mid to late game, it would be a fun idea to make the chosen state religion (say Protestantism in England) split up into more denominations rather than enjoy the broad category of "Protestantism". This would work as a sort of religious group. Similar to the Culture group idea, where you have a primary culture but then other cultures of a similar descent that are not exactly that of the majority of the population. So it would be like the state religion is Protestantism but this state also accepts Anglicanism, Lutheranism, Baptism, Methodism and (perhaps a major one in terms of a minority religion) Calvinism.
This could lead to provinces being of various denominations but still accepted because they all fall under the broad category of say Protestantism. Each province of said different denomination would have different pros and cons because of that denomination, like a higher chance of spawning certain advisors, a small chance of reduced state tech cost and the like.
The idea would be that as the state would have to balance power between the state and the religious heads and try to balance power between them? Either choose to keep them appeased or just try to eliminate them? I don't know for sure if it would necessarily work for a game as complex as EU4 and I imagine such a thing would take a lot of work to actually accomplish. But I do think it could be an interesting thing to add in.
