Hey all,

I've been with the Paradox stable since EU1, and have since played EU2, Legion (not a good idea), HoI (didn't like that) and CK (which I adore).

Now, I see Victoria is at a special sale price in the stores, so it piqued my interest. Thing is, I'm not sure to what extent Vicky will be such a great game. I don't what to play something that's overly complicated, but still has enough to keep me occupied during the long, 'boring' moments in international politics. Being a previous Paradox player, I'm familiar with the general game concept, so adaptation should not be too much of a problem (if it's simple).
Anyone out there like to convince me?

Cheers

Victoria at bargain prices is certainly a good buy.

Vicky is more like EU2 than HOI. It's grand strategic where warfare, economics, colonization and diplomacy all have an important role. There's not a lot of downtime, like EU2 can have, there's usually something that can be tweaked or monitored.

That said Vicky has a steep learning curve. If you're going to buy it, don't read the manual provided, but read the one found in a sticky at this forum, or at Vickywiki. Use the Vickywiki to get a lot of your basic questions answered and there's a guide beginners guide to Brazil on there.

Victoria is probably the most difficult but most rewarding Paradox game.

Out of curiosity - what do you like about CK??

Vicky IS complicated, but there is no unoccupied time. Managing pops, industries, armies, budget, commerce, infrastructure, prestige & diplo, you ALWAYS have something to do. Which I lack in CK.....

Other advantage : you can play from CK 1066 to Vicky 1920. Be sure to release some vassals before each game conversion, or you'll have 5 countries sharing Europe(In my last Game, GB, France, Germany, Russia, & some very small, as Lettonia, Catalonia or Ukraine). That's ultimately rewarding to start from a mere Polish count & have 60 mills led by poles in Azerbaidjan 854 years later.....

Hmm, thanks guys. Thing is, having CK compete with Vicky and Rome Total War, alongside work and all, is going to be a problem! :D

AndersSchm, I like CK because I'm a medieval fanatic... I like managing my dynasties, and also because I'm creating my own late medieval world (hopefully to produce dozens of bestselling novels later on...), CK gives some sort of idea as to how it all works.

I would advise you to get Victoria, it is easily one of the best games I have ever played. I do like medieval games too, partly because of interest in that era. I really liked Age of Kings/The Conquerers (still do, but after playing it so much, I am pretty much burnt out on it). The time period in Vicky is pretty interesting, though it doesnt capture my fancy as much as other times in history, it is cool enough to provide a background engaging enough, even if the 19th century isnt your favorite span of time . It is a difficult one to learn, but if you just trudge on and keep playing, you will get the hang of it.

I think it tries to give the populace a face. They react according to economic and social programs of the government. During peace its about making people happy and making LOTS of money, which you then spend. When it comes to war, it feels like hoi.

My fav Pardadox game, but eu2 is not far behind...

I just started a game of Victoria after almost a year of not touching it, I realized it's great fun. I unified Italy and am now busy thinking how I can pacify all those conservative farmers and labourers who aren't happy with liberal ruling party. A ruling party that makes it unable to make social reforms that would pacify them.

Really, there are so many related issues that it is daunting at times but when you do manage to achieve something the reward is even greater.

I have to say I am doing the same as Grosshaus. It is a enjoyable, if difficult game. I do recommend buying it.

Does sound good. What Grosshaus said about unifying Italy reminded me of reliving what I'd learnt in IB history - Bismarck, Cavour, late Tsarist Russia... ah...
I think I might just buy it then!

Yeah Vicki is great, there's so many things to do you don't get bored playing, and of course its always fun trying to find new ways to make your game that much better, I mean I've only just found about centralising my industry to get the maximum efficiency out of my capitalists!

I also got my game in one of those buy 2 games for a tenner in Game.

check out the US Amazon (www.amazon.com) - even with airmail shipping to the UK you'd probably come out ahead - especially with some of the retailers selling second-hand copies as low as US$1.50 (thought it didn't have the manual, but the manual was more for decoration anyways since this board and the Wiki offer much more info.)

You might try to check if the strategy 6-pack will be published in your country. HOI (platinum?), Victoria, EU2, EU2 Asian Chapter, Crown of the North and Two Thrones. EBGames site lists this for $20USD. The portuguese publisher apparently said they will be putting it out at 25€ (when, no idea. Feedback isn't their forte, I never got a reply to when they would be publishing HOI2...) It probably won't be cheaper than buying just Victoria, but then you do get all that other stuff.
