It states in the dev diary where the syncretic evolution was first revealed that the portrait and name is random.
And there goes me ever using that. What exactly is the point of having a slave race that is "Repugnant", "Deviant" "Natural Sociologists" "Talented" and "Rapid Breeders".

Having a random interval for something that should be beneficial to the player seems really weird. As it has a good chance completely backfiring, ending up giving the player a type of species they would normaly instantly purge.

You might have misunderstood how this works. The portrait and name of the slave race is random. The traits are not. So you're not going to get a type of species with traits that you'll want to purge; you'll get the default slave race traits (they have increased mineral production, forgot the trait names).

Well it gives four pops with 15% bonus to minerals, 5% bonus to food, 20% army damage, 15% bonus to empire ethics attraction, which doesn't include 10% bonus chattel slavery gives, so pretty decent bonuses if you want early army and minerals bonus and less likely for them to be drawn to egalitarian when enslaving them.

I'd think, rather than clutter up the race creator, if they could add a day one splash page that let you pick picture and name that would be a solid solution. A similar page has already been created for synthetic ascension and adding the ability to pick a race picture would be good to have for when they, hopefully, get multiple pictures for robotic populations.
Something like this, Paradox have to consider the work vs value of any addition to the game too.

I agree with choosing the name of the species, not so much with changing the portrait. But I can see how changing the portrait would be cool, but I feel it would only be applicable in circumstances of extreme modification.

I feel like subspecies resulting from gene modification should be be given a suffix name so they retain their connection to the original species while still being identifiable as unique.

I think it's the random element on the homeworld that people most dislike. This is your race, you're encouraged to construct your own story for these people, your own series of events, your own culture. And with Syncretic Evolution being a trait choice that's with you forever, you're going to want to include it.

Found my way back into the forums just to search for information about this. I'd like to make an empire where humans are the secondary species. Like if humans migrated from a dying Earth and found themselves on an already inhabited planet of creatures with equal intellect and slightly more advanced tech. I wanted this to be my first empire. Kinda bummed out now to be honest. Still hyped, but well, you know how it is.

Yes,i had a similar idea. Playing a parallel earth where neanderthals or Cro Magnons are still around or Earth in Karel Capeks "Válka s mloky / War with the Newts".
I would have taken the Cardassian/Klingon portrait for the first, and the fat toad reptiloid for the latter. It's a bummer that you only get that by restarting the game multiple times as humans, and even then the name of the syncretic race wont fit.

Also if you make your custom race that has a syncretic one, and set it as Ai controlled opponent, every game it will have a different slave race. That's a bummer too.

Starting with a random sister race might be nice too, sometimes, but I would like an option to set the slave race, and make it set even for ai playing the race for roleplay reasons.
After all it's no gamey advantage if the traits are the same anyway.

It seems humans always get the Neo-Chimp syncretic race. Even if you call them "Terrans". I wonder if it's tied to the name or the start in the sol system.

On the one hand its a nice touch, but on the other hand i really wanted to play my "war with the newts" scenario.
Oh well, let's hope for mods...
they only get neo chimps in the sol solar system otherwise it's random even in deneb
