I claimed the throne of Castille. But not only can I not declare war to get a PU with them when their king dies I don't get a PU either. Instead it says "A noble from House York succeeds to the throne"

Why a random noble from house York, why not my King from House York? How do I get my personal union?

That's a good question. What I've noticed is... if it says 'a noble from house x succeeds to the throne' before you claim throne, it will replace whatever dynasty with yours but still say a noble will succeed to the throne. However, if it says 'on monarch death, PU with x country' and you claim the throne, it will replace x country with your country or cause it to become disputed (unless of course they get an heir).

You only get the CB if of same dynasty. Let a month pass and it should read that you'll get the PU

PU:s are a two-step process since patch 1.3. First you have to get your family on their throne. Then you can get your king on it.

You only get the CB to enforce a PU if you already have a family member on the targets throne.

In my experience claiming the throne when a noble is expected to succeed will make it so that noble is of your dynasty (instead of whatever before the claim). That means you will be one step closer to a PU, but you won't be there yet.

Check Castile's Diplomacy screen. Are they in a PU with someone else? E.g Naples, Aragon?

I expect they are. And this is why it doesn't give you automatic PU, and instead says A Noble from <your house>.

Wait until they integrate their PU minor, then it will change to give you the PU automatically.

I didn't realise that this also blocked you from getting the CB, but that makes sense I guess. Though it's annoying.

In my experience claiming the throne when a noble is expected to succeed will make it so that noble is of your dynasty (instead of whatever before the claim). That means you will be one step closer to a PU, but you won't be there yet.

In this case, he already has the same Dynasty. Claiming the Throne should give him a CB to enforce it. But I believe that's being blocked by Castile having its own PU minors.

I've seen this case specifically, and with the same countries.

Spain had "A Noble from House Lancaster will succeed", with Lancaster being my dynasty. It said that for many years, then suddenly it changed to "PU with England." I was mystified, so I went back through many years of save games (wasn't Ironman, thankfully!) and realised that it changed at the moment that Spain integrated their PU minor, Naples.

It tries to block you from taking into PU a nation that itself leads a PU.

However, this can still happen forcibly, through war or event. If it does happen, such that e.g. England gets a forceful PU with Castile, who are PU-master of Naples, then England ends up as PU-master of both Castile and Naples.

This is very nice when you DOW Spain on the Claim Throne CB, and the act of DOWing them changes "PU with England" to "PU with Portugal" (who also has same dynasty.) Then, during the war, Spain's monarch dies. So they fall into PU with Portugal. But you're still at war with them. Spain drops out of the war, Portugal becomes War Leader, and the game is set to apply "Force PU with.." to the War Leader, not a specific target. So you fight Portugal, you get 84% WS, you force the PU, and that PU's Portugal, not Spain - even though you Portugal has an heir and you never (and couldn't) claimed their throne! Then, because Portugal is PU master of Spain, you end up with a PU of both Portugal, and Spain! When you only claimed the throne of Spain :)

Beautiful when it happens :)

(Note it can happen in even more ridiculous scenarios - e.g. DOW Spain on Claim Throne CB. They call in ally Austria. Spain drops out of the war for some reason, and Austria becomes WL. Now when you get 84% WS, you get a PU with Austria! despite them having a healthy monarch, healthy heir, different dynasty, and you not even having an RM with them. :) )

It all seems super buggy right now :p Hopefully Paradox will fix that in the future.

So what happens if Austria is the emperor when that happens, do you become the emperor yourself, or is an election triggered immediatly ?

What should happen is that Austria becomes illegible and that there's an immediate vote, the winner being whomever is next favourite of the Electors.

But I have read that there's another bug :) Specifically that Austria remains emperor, but it says that your king is emperor, as Austria no longer has their own monarch. I'm not sure if this remains for perpetuity or if it eventually clears itself up. Perhaps after your monarch dies, it correctly disallows Austria and another nation gets it. But it's possible that it just keeps re-electing Austria with your king, so long as they have the votes.

This sounds pretty annoying, because it makes it much, much harder to become Emperor yourself, knocking Austria off. Because the normal winning strategy is to vassalise a few electors, then go to war against Austria to ensure those vassalised Electors are also at war with Austria, and so won't vote for Austria during the war, and get reduced relations for a while after. Beating Austria also allows you to tank their prestige, costing them more voting points with everyone.

But of course, you can't go to war against your own subject :)

The PU with Emperor thing is explained here quite well. However, it is MUCH easier when you PU the Emperor that they have passed the hereditary reform of course, electors then become irrelevant...
