How do you get adjacent fighters to join in a fight? I have a carrier that has been getting attacked by enemy planes. The carrier's air units launch to fight, and I pick a fighter group on shore next to the sea area and order to the combat. No matter what movement option I pick all that happens is the new fighters land on the carrier and become the carrier's fighters. How do I get them to fight the existing battle?

I tried that. They immediately go and land on the carrier. On top of that, the carrier's regular planes never return to the carrier after fighting. They usually just hang around in the air over it. Land and refuel, you idiots!

Hmm, sounds like a tricky situation, then. Personally I forgo naval combat altogether and simply use naval bombers to destroy the enemy's fleet, muahahaha.

Just a thought (haven't fought with carriers for quite a while now). Did you try ordering your fighters to make a naval attack in the occupied sea zone? Ignore whether they have any naval attack capabilities, air units with an attack rating of zero can actually cause damage and loss of organization in HOI 1. They should attack any enemy air that they encounter since air units will always fight other air units first in a contested zone. After a naval attack order they should then return to their home provinces having savaged the enemy naval air. Or perhaps not...

Also, if I recall correctly, ordering your carrier to move will land its planes. Then cancel the movement order and they'll be readyo to go again.

This doesn't seem to work unless the movement order for the carrier is actually carried out. The planes will sit not automatically return to the carrier until the carrier enters a new zone. That kind of sucks, as it takes too much time to move fleets from zones that you don't want to vacate just to get the stupid planes to land.
