About map

I really dont care much if map will be divided in hexes or provinces.As far as they are all of the same size its ok with me.Untill now the distance between german line and SOV capital from polish borders was 3-4 provinces,same as from german border to Paris(true the east were bigger so you moved for longer time but with 4-5 attacks you were in the gates of Moscow).
Even better if the sea provinces are homogenised.Especially in the sea range of detection plays enormous importance.I can only dream for now a Task force with surface units in front line seeking enemy while CV's stay out of combat a little behind and have airplanes ready for take-off.Lets hope that in HoI 2 there not going to be any monstrous sea or map fractions or the Victoria one.I am really looking forward for something new here.

I doubt that Johan and the design crew and betas are snickering. For the most part they do respect the ideas presented by the Paradox/HOI/HOI2 community. Though, yes they do know that we grab on every little bit of information like starving beggars. :)

It's quite possible the map is done and very little can be/will be done to change it, so our comments on our preferences for the sizes of provinces may be wasted.

But as to other aspects of the game, I've found that the crew working inside is often very responsive to those of us in the GD fora. (Just so long as we don't get annoying by mouthing off about every little thing that gripes us! :D )

Well ... sort of. When you need multiple divisions of MARINES to take Stalingrad or Leningrad or Berlin, something's not right. :wacko: (Engineers, I could understand.)

Anyway, SK's point is that the surrounding and bypassing of major cities (Kharkov, Sevastopol, etc.) would add a wonderfully historical layer of strategy to the experience. I agree.

They are not 'walking'! That gap is only small - enough that troops could do this in small boats scratched up from local fishermen... that's what this represents IMHO.


Also a cool map idea just came to me - using the editor it should be possible to make and print blank maps for planning campaigns (that part is not new)
AND the editor should include tools for this like drag and drop bendy thrust arrows and defensive lines like on maps in history books. :)

At the moment I am trying to do this in an image editor - should be able to do it in the Paradox editor directly.

I don't want to dig up the old "Map bugs" thread, I only hope that someone in the Paradox still remembers it and will take our pleas and suggestions there into consideration. You know, Danzig representing Polish Pomerania, a tiny town of Cieszyn representing Silesia, all the other wrong names and so on.

As to the size of the provinces, they indeed might be a little smaller. Not too small, but slightly. This RISK-ish look seems to be a little outdated when there's really no reason to limit the game for playability or computer speed purposes. Also, if the HoI2 is going to keep the level of provincial micro-management low (as it is now in HoI), the number of provinces shouldn't really be a problem.

That is of course a matter of personal preferences. On the other hand, what has to be changed is the size (and number) of Soviet provinces. Currently the width of the front at the beginning of Barbarossa is practically the same as near Moscow, while IRL the Krauts got overstreched with every mile into Russia. In HoI Germans can keep the initial number of divisions per province throughout the war in the east no matter how far east they get.

I hope it's not too late and the reply from the Paradox guys won't be the good ol' "the map has been made, dice has been cast, nothing can be done".

More provinces = more room to manouever and I like the idea of smaller provinces maybe providing better areas you can use as choke points.

ooohhh...and another thing about more and smaller provinces. I might be able to actually hold off the SU advance for longer and not implode spectacularly until 1943 instead of the end of 1942 :D .

The idea with the capital cities sounds very good !!!!

Also the possibility for better clicking on the province.
One possibility is to make the whole map much bigger, the other to make the possibility to "hide" all units for provincional clicking.

I don't think that you need hexes, but you can design the provinces in that way, that you make all of them nearly in the same size and give them many neighbor provinces (if in the middle of a country/ continent = 5-6)

So it looks better than hexes, but has nearly the same function
