Why should the planner give bonus though?

Is it to compensate for the fact that AI will never be as smart as the player who has a few tricks in his pocket to use...and thus the AI gets cheap arbitrary "Hand of God" bonuses to balance it out?

Or is it "hand your troops to the AI or perish!!" thing?

The longer you have to work on a plan, the better you can perform it. Maps, sand tables, enemy dispostion, etc.

It's supposed to simulate the pre-planning, and prepraing for an operation, while manual control is an "ad hoc" order without any time to make detailed orders or preparations for the units involved.
Yeah, pretty much the same way you can order hasty attacks and planned attacks (or whatever they're called) in War in the East. I like this, personally, if there is one thing I would like to see explored more in games like this it's devs experimenting with taking away some of the player's "omnipotence" and "omniscience". Having to let your troops plan before you actually execute maneuvers is an interesting example of this.

Making a battleplan is the way that you tell your troops about your plans. All what you described(and more) is basically being abstracted into making a battleplan and waiting for the planning to finish. If you don't do that you can still do your invasion, but at a reduced efectiveness because your generals and armies didn't have time to prepare for it. Think about D-day. How many years of preparation did it take to do the landings?

Just by placing unit on the front line doesnt automaticaly mean they are planing to do X Y Z. The battle planer, and bonus, is something you set for futrure operations. If you plan on using these 2, 4, 10 divisions to attack on this front, and to advance to this point, you should allow the AI to take this idea and give you the bonus. Giving you a better chance for success.

Your "manual plan" is something you, not the AI, are planing. Thus no bonus. You are not using the bonus built into the game mechanics.

Thanks, guys. I guess it can be counted as an overall heavily abstracted depiction of the situation.

Now, it makes me wonder what happens if we fight completely without battle plans. Since AI spies cannot discover something that doesn't exist and cannot prepare for it, I hope it is intelligent enough to know that if Germany has put millions over millions on the border with Soviet Union but hasn't invaded, it doesn't mean there won't be an invasion and it can relax and send troops away..for example.

Cheers for posting the interview @afghanrabbit, an interesting read :). The supply situation sounds right odd (it's almost in complete contradiction of what we were told vis-a-vis fleets in the supply DD) but I think it's best to wait and see at this point.

If you want manual control, just build army's of 2 -5 division and give them all there unique plan. That way you do manage a lot yourself, and you can get the bonus from preparing.

To have to do that is even more micromanaging than HOI3 in some respects, and not possible for less powerful countries when you have to 'pay' to get more generals to lead them. :/

That would be even more micromanagement I think. Instead of having your entire army under AI command, you have to create and manage little command groups everywhere, rebuild their plans every few minutes...

Imagine playing HoI3 as Soviet Union in 1943-44, and putting all your divisions under AI command (not the corps or above, just divisions) one by one. And issuing them all new targets and attack/defend/prepare priorities and having to pause every few seconds. And carry out every small expedition and frontier-management in the next 6 hours to progress a few months.

It would be too tedious.
