I posted in the General area first, so if you read it there you don't have to read it here, again... unless u want too.

Having just purchased EU. I would like to relate my scheme of expansion in the early parts of the game.

I enjoy playing the Fantasy Scenario. So thats what i will be talking about. It gives quite a lesson in the basics of the game. Getting started is rather easy, til u cross that first border.

Pause the game at start and have a look at the natives that surround you. Are they blood-thristy savages, or peaceful farmers, or somewhere in between. What is the cost in gold and the chance of success. The best way to look is to access a colonist and go on a recon. place the cursor in the province of interest and look at the stats in the screen to the left. If you see red numbers just ignore and look somewhere else for that first colony. Gold numbers are ok, but bright Green is the best. High success and low cost is what ur looking for. as well as peaceful natives.

Have an Army preceed the colony you are about to place. If the natives are too aggressive, level 7,8 or "shudder" 9. You must carry the occupation to its correct solution, Wipe them out, continue attacking until they are scattered to the four winds. Sure there are no 2nd class natives to order about and evenually incorparate into a thriving city. But u don't have to worry about natives attacking a failed colony attempt.

It seems to me when i fail at an attempt, the chances of pissing off the natives is greatly increased. And if there is no Army guarding those precious colonists. Its either bye-bye colony or build an army and take back whats left. Not much in some cases. Level 5 to level 1 in a blink of the eye.
It really hurts if you are only, ONE hundred men, women and childern, away from the that 1st level colonial city.

Oh!!, the cost in time and money, not to mention the ramifications to the rest of the empire. Of course there is still the question of the natives, do i show mercy, or put them to the sword. How much did i get pissed off.

Those natives that have shown to be of a more peaceful level, 1,2 or 3, can still revolt, but i find a large army in country will prevent more attacks than an unprotected colony will.

If, in your mind its worth the time, gold, army, and colonists to claim as part of your empire don't stop until its a city. Sure some soldiers will desert, colonists will die from the primitive conditions, gold will be spent like water, and time will seem to be of limited quanity... but it will be worth it. Just to expand to twice your size in provinces.

Of course other things must be done while colonization is in progress but for now i will leave this thread as is and hope others can enlighten me and others as to their suggestions and commets.

What a great game, history lesson, economic model,
military challenge, and so much more......

I will post more as i learn more.

I also want to say, thank you all,for all, the posts written up til now by all of you gamers out there. Truly u are all people, i would like to know in this world of ours.
And this is my way of saying THANKS!
