We had a multiplayer game at the office yesterday afternoon, which showed some interesting aspects of civil wars. We were seven people, with Rome(yonaz), Macedonia(chiwiss), Egypt(besuchov), Seleukids(king), Carthago(doomdark), Armenia(me) and Bosphorus(podcat) played.
So, we're about 50 years into the game.. Rome taken out Magna Grecia & Epirus, and fighting of celtic barbarians, Macedonia expanded into Illyria and Thrace, Seleukids and Carthage reducing Egypt to a Nile Valley state, Bosporus is still a backwater, and my glorious Armenia has created a nice state in northern Asia Minor. I am currently allied with Macedonia and the Seleukids, and engaged in a war to protect my AI ally Iberia to the north from the Bosphoran attacks. I'm maintaining 3 armies, 1 purely with auxiliaries of cavalry and horse archers, about 9,000 in total, to move quickly to adress any hostile forces in my interior, another army of 6,000 militia to guard cities recently taken, and my main royal army of 18,000 men, mostly of heavy infantry and archers. During these wars of course, the commanders have a few of the regiments loyal too them, but i need those great commanders to win the wars.
Rome has when I was not watching conquered Thrace, and is massing large amount of troops there.. And suddenly declares war upon me. Luckily I have my main army in western anatolia and meet them there and win the first battle, but then forced to retreat. My commander of that army is, thanks to the eternal fire, not the most charismatic person in the world so I feel safe having him commanding it. Martial is 7 and his Charisma 0. So, stuck in a two front war against overwhelming odds, I decide to call in my allies, Macedonia and Seleukids. Macedonia joins in the war, happily expecting to get the Romans out of greece. The seleukids on the other hand dishonors my alliance. I get a little bit weary then, but I am fighting, and it is looking like I may survive this..
When the following happens.
Civil War
Artabazus Parysatis is a name that will forever live in infamy, as he declared an open rebelling against King and Country. What made matters worse was that he was in command of the cavalry army I was using to fight the war against the Bosphorus Kingdom with. So my northeastern part of the country, the coastline of eastern Black Sea declares for him. And I have almost empty coffers, and only 5000 militia to face that threat, as my main army is tied up in the west. Things sure were looking grim now, but the worst was yet to come. My king and some loyal nobles spend their personal wealth in setting up a new army together with recruits that should have been able to contain them...
However, less than a month later, Paphalgonia(sp?) and Pontus declares for the rebelside, effectively cutting my country in 2 parts, to make matters worse, I have low stability and high war exhaustion, which cause some occasional rebels to spawn. Rebels, which when you are in a civil war automatically joins the other side, making them a far worse threat.
Then the Seleukids thinks this is a great time to readjust the borders, and invades.
Luckily it was the end of the scheduled testingtime so I did not have to see my glorious Armenia get completely dismembered yet. But damn, it was a rush playing that.
