And we begin...

Prologue - The USSA in 1936
After the founding fathers declared American Independence from the British Empire in 1776, a new age had begun not just in the Americas but across the world. However, despite the new Republic promising justice and equality for all the fire of the revolution was slowly snuffed out and as the 19th Century progressed American leaders were corrupted by Capitalism and Imperialism with the American worker reduced to little more than either serfs to gluttonous businessmen or cannon fodder for the ambitions of expansionist politicians. The breaking point came in 1932 after Norman Thomas became the first Socialist to be elected President of the United States. It was at this point the Capitalists and their lackeys in Washington showed their true colors by refusing to accept the results and instead declared martial law. When in early 1933 the Socialist Party called a General Strike many soldiers sent to crush the strike instead found common cause with the workers and turned their guns on their officers and those who would choose to remain loyal to a Government that had betrayed its people, this was the beginning of the Second American Revolution.

Xj6XLdo.gif

Members of the 'Bonus Army' clash with police in the Summer of 1932. The Government crackdown on these Great War veterans created much sympathy for the Socialist cause in the Army and was the reason for many defections in the early weeks of the Second Revolution.
Despite these defections a great number of soldiers chose to believe Hoovers lies about the evils of the Socialist cause and would side against the Revolutionaries. Despite these setbacks the workers were quick to mobilize and the American Red Army was formed, achieving many early victories against the less organised forces of the "Legitimate Government" particularly in the Northeast. The turning point came in April as the US Army was decisively defeated near Detroit and many soldiers now saw the writing on the wall and began to defect en masse. In May the United Socialist States of America officially came into existence with its provisional capital in Detroit. States began to secede from the US and by June the United States and the Hoover Regime no longer had any territory and in effect no longer existed. Many counter-revolutionaries fled across the border to Canada where they continue to claim to be the "Legitimate American Government". They may make all the claims they want, America now belongs to the workers!

sjaOBFk.jpg

Ruins of Chicago in Late 1933. The city, considered to be the home of the Socialist Party of America, saw bitter street fighting during the Revolution and in Early 1934 would officially become the capital of the newly formed USSA.
As 1936 begins it has been two and a half years since the USSA came into existence and the young nation still bears the scars of the short but violent Revolution that brought it into existence. The USSA's problems are not just internal but also external as they now find themselves surrounded by nations who are committed to preventing the spread of the Revolution, a Revolution many SPA leaders speak openly of wanting to bring to their neighbours. There is also the matter of territories occupied by these predatory neighbours that remain beyond the reach of the USSA...at least for now.

XHxUIMm.png

The current government of the USSA is headed by Norman Thomas, taking the leadership position he had earned in the 1932 Elections. Thomas remains a popular figure amongst the American citizenry but this year will see the first elections of the new US and Thomas has some rivals emerging within the Socialist Party itself.

r4lmNxJ.png

On the southern border of the USSA lies the Confederate States, the greatest rival to the US before and the greatest enemy of the American workers now. The Confederacy greatly expanded its territory at the expense of the US during the Revolution, seizing Arizona, New Mexico and Missouri. The southern aristocracy will surely crumble before the Revolution once the Red Army is capable of expanding the USSA. The vast African-American underclass within the CSA, long oppressed, has gained knowledge of the teachings of Marx through the black market smuggling network across the border, a network that has existed since even before the War of Secession, they will be a willing ally in the liberation of the South and already they prepare for the revolution...

uCpeiLh.png

Meanwhile to the North is the Dominion of Canada, lackeys of the British Imperialists who use Canada as a way to continue exerting their influence on the American continent. This will not be allowed for much longer as the workers of Canada will also be freed of their allegiance to the old order. Britain may have been exempt from the Monroe Doctrine of old but the USSA does not consider this so...

NA0S9rH.png

Further south, below the Confederacy but also bordering the Western USSA, is the Empire of Mexico. This Empire remains the last legacy of Bonapartist Imperialism that was established in the midst of the War of Secession. However the Mexican Royalists rule over an empire of ashes as the nations' workers grow more restless...unrest which is of course greatly encouraged by the Government in Chicago. It seems extremely likely that the next Revolution in the Americas will take place in Mexico.

uFvNJs7.png

As tensions rise in Europe with the rise of a Revanchist France threatening both Britain and the apparently stagnating German Empire, there is in the East the other major Socialist power in the world, the Soviet Union. While many of the USSA's leadership consider their Soviet counterparts to be too extreme and totalitarian, they still appear to be a natural ally in the goal of achieving the world revolution. Maybe the differences between these two countries can be reconciled in the name of the revolution.

Y0H4KL0.png

The young USSA finds itself with many challenges to face both within and without but should these challenges be met then the cause of Socialism has a bright future indeed. Surely not the Artistocrats in Charleston nor the Imperialists in London nor the Reactionaries in Paris can stop the march of the Revolution. May the Workers of the World Unite!

Will follow

Ok so after some unforeseen delays its finally time for the first proper chapter of this AAR...

Chapter 1 - January-June 1936
The United Socialist States of America, the newly created worker's paradise will surely become a beacon of equality in the Western Hemisphere...and later the world. However as 1936 began the nation had a lot of work to prepare itself for the task of liberating the oppressed people's across borders.

QKFsMJG.png

One area in which the USSA has lagged dangerously behind is in technology, the chaos of the Red Scare in the 1920s as well as the 'brain drain' of skilled industrialists and military leaders to neighbouring countries has had a seriously negative effect on the USSA. However, the USSA is still better off without these capitalists and traitors and under the new Socialist system this nation will soon catch up to their neighbours...

nJyoKRq.png

In Europe tensions continue to rise as the Revanchist French reoccupy their western regions which had been demilitarized under the Treaty of Potsdam in 1919. Neither the Germans nor the British do anything other than protest this French aggression. Clearly Europe is on the road to another Great War as France regains power. From the American point of view a war between Imperialists and Reactionaries will do nothing more than weaken both and leave them open to influence from the Socialist countries who will aid in sweeping both of these remnants of the old order into the dustbin of history, therefore such a war should not only be hoped for but actively encouraged.

tOmBFXr.png

Back at home the Socialist leaders are busy preparing for the upcoming Socialist National Convention which is to take place in May. Whoever gains the upper hand in this convention is guaranteed to become President in the November Elections. While the USSA officially has free elections the Socialist Party will win no matter what the voters say, it may not be entirely ethical but this nation is at far too tender a stage to allow the capitalists and reactionaries to regain a foothold in American politics. So, for the time being, sacrifices will have to be made.

Ws9nSHW.png

In Mid-February there are some interesting developments in Portugal as a General Strike is violently broken up by Police, resulting in a massacre in Porto. The Portuguese workers look to be on the verge of a Revolution and the USSA will certainly be watching events with great interest.

m5YeYyG.png

In March the great Dam project on the border between Nevada & Arizona is complete. Originally named the Boulder Dam, it is officially christened the Unity Dam and will stand as a testament to the achievements of American Socialism.

qyGNeJ1.png

Unfortunately, just two weeks later there is some bad news as March 17th sees the city of Pittsburgh devastated by a terrible flood. Damage is extensive both in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area but fortunately the government is quick to begin relief efforts.

EfNr6eD.png

Meanwhile back in Europe the ineffectual British oil embargo against Italy is ended. Britain had began the embargo in response to the Italian Invasion of Abyssinia but the embargo completely failed to deter Italian aggression, not least because Germany refused to aid the British in its enforcement, hoping to keep Italy friendly in the face of the increasing threat of the French. This whole debacle shows how ineffective the victors of the Great War are at enforcing the treaties they imposed on their vanquished foes in 1919.

tz3OIWO.png

There also seems to be yet another crisis brewing in Europe as in the Czech-controlled Sudetenland, the Sudeten German Party was formed by that regions large German population. Both the German Empire and Austria have in recent years been pushing themselves as the protectors of Germans in foreign countries but of course with their being historic rivals this is sure to result in crisis. Such events just prove how the Imperialist powers use the siren call of Nationalism to extend their influence beyond their borders. Such petty squabbles will be a thing of the past once the New World Order comes to pass.

nxlFQAX.png

Back in Portugal the tense situation there explodes into open conflict as Socialists seize control of Lisbon in a Coup. However, the Royalists manage to flee North and establish themselves amongst loyalist forces in the North of the country. This is the beginning of the Portuguese Civil War.

E5p45Ue.png

This Civil War soon escalates into a proxy war as various nations send aid and volunteers to aid each faction. Spain & Britain naturally send aid to the Royalists as do the Reactionaries in France & Italy, apparently these rival factions in Europe are willing to fight together against the Revolution. Germany for their part decides not to involve themselves and even goes as far as to deny transit to a Polish Legion that wishes to go fight for the Royalists. The Socialists also gain support to as the Scandinavian Brigade is sent by Socialist Finland to aid in their Revolutionary fight.

gq8AabH.png

2YgZ2v2.png

In Asia the Chinese Reactionaries take advantage of the Portuguese Civil War to annex the port of Macau. The port had long been under Portuguese control and the Chinese continue the quest to rid their country of European influence. Their cause would be admirable if it wasn't for their form of government. Meanwhile the Soviet Union begins sending aid to the Socialist Government in Lisbon which becomes heavily influenced by the authoritarian form of Socialism practised by the Soviets. Attempts by the Government in Chicago to aid the Portuguese are shot down as many SPA members including President Thomas himself are uneasy about aiding Soviet-style Socialist Governments. This is no less than a betrayal of the Portuguese workers and is sure to affect Thomas' standing at the Socialist Party Convention, now only a month away.

4dZ68Yk.png

Back home there is a new concern as the British lackeys in Ottawa establish the so-called 'New England Republic' from territories annexed from the United States during the Revolution of 1933. It isn't long before American counter-revolutionaries who fled to Canada begin resettling in this new republic. In fact, New England's status as a new home for Americans who opposed the Revolution and close ties to Canada leads to it being derisively referred to as 'Canada's Canada' by many citizens of the USSA. The establishment of the New England Republic is accompanied by a Canadian announcement that it will guarantee the new nation's Independence against 'any foreign threats'. It is obvious to everyone which 'foreign threat' the Canadians are referring to. What the Canadians nor this so-called Republic very well may not know is that New England has already been infiltrated by Socialist agents who even now are gathering intelligence and recruiting new allies to destabilize this abortion of a nation.

XanXbOx.png

Back in Europe the ongoing Portuguese Civil War has clearly rattled the Reactionaries as France & Spain sign the 'Anti-Comintern Pact' agreeing to mutual assistance in 'Containing Socialist aggression'. While primarily aimed at the Soviet Union this new pact is undoubtedly wary of the USSA since both nations continue to rule over territories in the Americas, territories that the USSA will one day free from the tyranny of European Imperialism.

yIxncjt.png

On May 23rd the big day finally arrives as the Socialist National Convention meets to decide who will run for President on the SPA ticket in November. The incumbent Norman Thomas' indecisiveness regarding Portugal has damaged his popularity within the party and in a major upset it is the newly formed "Fourth Way" faction led by Earl Browder gains the Socialist nomination. Browder will now run as the Socialist candidate in November and is of course guaranteed a victory. Many SPA members are uneasy with the prospect of Browder as President, quietly referring to him as 'Browder the Bolshevik'. What is certain is that 1937 is going to be a very different year for the USSA under their new president.

WOUV8ev.png

In Portugal, King Carlos I dies suddenly in what can only be described as suspicious circumstances. What is also suspicious is the swift reactionary coup that puts Antonio Salazar into power. This new government will now continue the fight against the Revolutionaries to the south.

O6PeuBN.png

Elsewhere in Europe the reactionary nations of France & Italy continue to grow closer diplomatically with Italian Prime Minister Italo Balbo being invited to Paris. It seems likely that this visit will include discussions over French territory annexed by Italy after the Great War.

xoGvGwI.png

As June comes to an end the winds of change blow swiftly across the USSA, the nation continues to grow in strength despite attempts by their jealous and fearful neighbours to keep them weak and diplomatically isolated. With Earl Browder due to be elected President in November the USSA surely has nowhere to go but up...

Lots going on in the world.

Time for the next chapter...

Chapter 2 - July-December 1936
The USSA is continuing to increase in strength both militarily and industrially. It is a slow process but a strong army is vital in spreading the socialist cause to the many oppressed people living across the borders of the USSA.

dn87PlH.png

South of the border, the unrest in Mexico continues to rise as the workers become increasingly dissatisfied with the actions of their government. In the coastal city of Veracruz a massive protest is violently broken up by police. These heavy handed actions, extremely reminiscent of similar violence in Portugal, surely only aids the cause of the Socialists, who with American support are quietly gathering arms and training under Red Army advisors. The Revolution in Mexico must be inevitable now.

raKuX38.png

Late July sees much of North America afflicted by a heat wave that led to several deaths and the destruction of crops. This heat wave mostly affected the USSA and the Confederacy. While this disaster is somewhat of an economic setback to the USSA it is one they shall quickly recover from.

NA3FafZ.png

Back in Europe, the meeting in Paris between the Reactionary leaders of France & Italy occurs. The meeting brings the two nations closer diplomatically with the Italians also agreeing to hold a referendum on the status of Corsica, which has been under Italian control since 1919.

XLmDisC.png

In South America, the Empire of Brazil sees an increase of support for a reactionary movement known as the Integralists. Brazil, already a reactionary nation with class divisions comparable to the Confederacy, is becoming even more of a danger to the stability of the Americas. This Empire will certainly be a major obstacle in spreading the revolution to South America.

A4Expox.png

Across the Atlantic there is also a rising reactionary threat in Britain. In October a group of reactionaries attempt a march in London but are met by a much larger group of their opponents made up mostly of Socialists. The resulting clash, referred to as the 'Battle of Cable Street' ends in a clear victory for those opposed to the hateful reactionaries and in Chicago this event creates some great hope that the British Socialist movement will one day have the strength to overthrow their tyrannical monarchy.

mfAh4e2.png

In America the long awaited November Elections arrive and, as expected, Earl Browder is easily elected as the next president of the USSA. It is surely a new age for the young nation and his supporters now eagerly await inauguration day.

cjl3fis.png

Just over a week after the USSA Election, the tensions in Mexico finally explode into Revolution as Socialists with backing from Chicago rise up in Northern Mexico. Socialist leader Lazaro Cardenas, who until recently had been in exile in the USSA, takes charge of the newly established Revolutionary Mexico which begins its revolution against the hated Royalists. Naturally, the Confederacy is quick to support the tottering counter-revolutionaries by sending equipment and volunteers to fight alongside the Imperial Army.

rmIKdcv.png

Within a day the USSA announces their support for the Revolutionary Government in Mexico and begins sending men and materials across the border into Northern Mexico. The Mexican Empire will surely crumble against the might of the revolutionaries!

EKsThTZ.png

Back in Europe the Soviet Union also grows in strength after the Finnish Communists seek to join the Union which Moscow gladly accepts. Opinion in Chicago is divided on this Soviet action with some considering it Imperialist in nature but a majority, including Browder, consider it a necessary step in protecting the Finnish workers, pointing out that it was at their request that they became part of the USSR. No doubt that the actions of the other major Socialist power in the world will continue to divide the leadership of the USSA for the forseeable future. But surely Socialists have too many enemies to be arguing amongst themselves.

SkFekHI.png

Meanwhile, to the south of the USSA the vile Confederacy continue their opposition to equality by oppressing their large black minority. Many blacks crossed into the USSA to either escape southern racism or to request aid from the USSA. However, it is not only blacks that face oppression in the Confederacy which is currently ongoing a Red Scare far more intense than the one the USA saw in the 1920s. White socialists or even those suspected of being socialists are facing oppression and often imprisonment without trial by the tyrannical southern government. With requests from the oppressed southerners, both white and black, Chicago has decided that it can no longer stand by while the Confederates impose these awful policies on their own people. Along the massive Inter-American border, black market smugglers move massive amounts of weapons from the USSA to the southern people who wish to take action against their government. Someday in the not to distance future, the scourge of southern tyranny will be wiped out but for now the USSA will do everything to weaken the Confederacy from the inside.

BG1PTZ2.png

Back in Europe the long-awaited referendum regarding Corsica arrives with the island voting to remain part of Italy. French Prime Minister Deloncle accepts the results and hopes for future cooperation between the French and Italian peoples. As the reactionary nations grow closer together the threat of a new Great War in Europe seems ever more likely.

0oAEgIu.png

As 1936 comes to an end it certainly seems like the USSA is emerging from its slumber. Supporting revolutionary groups in the Confederacy, New England and Mexico while slowly building up its industry. It may not be long before the nation is ready to begin the gargantuan task of spreading socialism to the rest of the Americas and the day is sorely awaited by many.

Definitely sounds like the USSA is starting to stretch its limbs a little

New Chapter time...

Chapter 3 - (January-June 1937)
As 1937 began, there was a sense that the USSA was not far off becoming the dominant power in the Americas like it had been on the way to being before the War of Secession. This time, internal dissent and imperialist interference in American affairs would not be allowed to derail the USSA's inevitable rise. With the inauguration of a new president mere weeks away, the USSA is at an important crossroads but Earl Browder has ambitious plans and the future of America looks bright.

5z0igdv.png

South of the border, the Mexican Civil War continues to rage with both Revolutionary and Counter-Revolutionary Forces fighting bitterly. It seems as though neither side has yet gained an advantage but heavy fighting continues in Veracruz where, despite being cut off from the Revolutionary capital of Monterrey and being blockaded by Confederate warships the brave Revolutionaries hold out, inflicting heavy casualties on the attacking Imperialists. These heroes must be relieved and Chicago continues to funnel supplies to the Revolutionaries to aid them in trying to breakthrough to their comrades.

3OF0GyN.png

In Europe, fears of Socialism continue to grip the reactionaries as the Revolutionaries begin to gain the upper hand in Portugal. These fears result in the reactionary nations of Italy, Austria & China signing the Anti-Comintern Pact. This pact is growing in power and is sure to become a major thorn in the side of the Socialist cause.

CpHVf50.png

WZFKx1C.png

Back at home the big day finally arrives when, on a sunny day in Chicago on January 20th Earl Browder is officially sworn in as the new President of the United Socialist States of America. In his inaugural address, Browder stressed the need for the USSA to strengthen at home and destroy the remnants of counter-revolutionaries within their own borders before spreading their influence abroad. He referred to the Confederacy as a 'Malignant Tumor on the map of North America' and promised to end Imperialism in America. His words inspired the loyal people of the USSA and is sure to have scared the foreign reactionaries. It is the beginning of a new age of American Socialism.

0BJzVEj.png

vnOxTqT.png

One of the major foreign attendees of this historic inauguration was Andrei Zhdanov of the Soviet Union. Zhdanov was Head of Propaganda in the Soviet Communist Party and one of the leading members of the Politburo. Later this year the Soviet Congress will elect a new Premier and Zhdanov is one of the leading contenders in the race to become the new Head of the Soviet Government. Browder and Zhdanov found much common ground in a meeting between the two and the new American President endorsed Zhdanov to become the next Soviet Premier. As notable as the presence of Zhdanov at the Inauguration in Chicago was the absence of any other leading Soviet officials, showing how they felt about the new President. The race for the Soviet Premiership will undoubtedly have a major effect on relations between the USSA & the Soviets and it seems that only Zhdanov is capable of ensuring cooperation between the two Socialist powers for the foreseeable future.

aGC28QN.png

Back in Europe, the Spanish Kingdom continued to shift further to the Right as not long after the Reactionary General Franco took power as Prime Minister he began suppressing any opposition to his rule, particularly from Left-Wing political movements. Undoubtedly as a response to the situation in Portugal, Franco banned the Communist Party and shut down their meetings by force. Many were able to flee across the border into Portugal but many were not so lucky and fell victim to the counter-revolutionary violence of the Franco Regime.

RM4LWuW.png

A month after his inauguration, Browder began introducing his new policies which would massively transform the USSA, surely for the better. First, he purged the Socialist Party itself of those who opposed his ambitions. These opponents, who subscribed to the Trotskyist 'World Revolution' form of Socialism were deemed untrustworthy as they were surely more loyal to the Trotskyists in Moscow than to American Socialism, these foreign agents had to be dealt with so Browder could continue his plans without foreign interference.

uAWschI.png

With his opponents within the Socialist Party out of the way, Browder was now free to begin his massive industrialisation plans, known as the Five-Year Plans. This would drastically improve the industrial capacity and economic might of the USSA, making it the dominant power in the Western Hemisphere and beyond. He also announced the beginning of a vast program of Collectivisation across the country. This policy proved unpopular with many Americans but it would still be implemented, sacrifices have to be made so the USSA can become strong. Those who oppose these new policies will be punished.

Ip7PjBR.png

qaNCSbb.png

In March Browder announced the nationalization of all industry in the USSA, transferring ownership of all privately run companies to the state. The fact that such companies still existed almost four years after the Revolution was a serious failure of the Thomas administration, which had tolerated a degree of private ownership to ease in the transition to Socialism. Well that "transition" is now over as the remaining Capitalists were dispossessed of that which they had gained at the expense of the American workers, many of whom were glad to finally see the end of a system which had lasted longer than it should have.

NMz11Rw.png

Meanwhile the Five-Year Plans were already beginning to bear fruit. The hard work of Americans will very soon propel the USSA to greatness.

HdO9scK.png

As Browder consolidated his control over both party and state there were increased calls in the USSA for a restoration of Free Speech and other civil liberties that had been suspended in order to prevent a counter-revolution. In response to these calls, President Browder made a speech stating that in no uncertain terms these liberties can not yet be restored as long as reactionary elements and foreign agents continue to infest American society. Many were angered by these words but many more saw that reactionaries could easily use these liberties as a weapon as they had in Europe. Such dangerous ideology cannot be allowed to regain traction within the USSA.

EL1JR7Y.png

In April the Soviet Congress met to decide who would be the new Premier of the USSR. The hopes of the USSA and of Socialist cooperation worldwide rested with Andrei Zhdanov but unfortunately he failed to win the Premiership. Instead, to the horror of Chicago, the Right-Wing branch of the Soviet Communist Party won out and NIkolai Bukharin became the new Premier. This was no less than a betrayal of the International Proletariat as Moscow came under the control of Revisionist traitors. It seems now that only the USSA and their Mexican comrades to the south are the only true Socialist countries in the world. Protests were staged across the USSA denouncing Soviet Revisionism while the Soviets denounced their American counterparts as Radicals and spoke out against Browder's "Personality Cult" in the USSA. It is clear that any solidarity between the USSA and Soviet Union is now dead.

qYZIyvf.png

This Soviet betrayal showed that the USSA, now the true vanguards of Socialism, must increase their aid to Left-Wing movements across the world and prevent a spread of revisionism to other countries. While this is generally a long-term goal there are measures the USSA can take now in regards to Socialism in the Americas. There was an increase in intelligence funding to aid American agents operating in the Western Hemisphere and not long after the newly-formed Bureau of Propaganda established 'Radio Free America' to spread the message of true Socialism to the oppressed proletariat of the neighbouring American countries. This Radio Free America encouraged Socialists to arm themselves and promised USSA aid to any Revolutionaries in America.

cxGnXVO.png

Unsurprisingly, the most enthusiastic recipients of Radio Free America's message were the oppressed blacks of the Confederacy. In Missouri, where blacks had gained many rights in the decades after the War of Secession, saw heavy violence as these blacks resisted the loss of the rights it had taken them so long to gain. Even basic demands such as a Right to Education were denied by the tyrants in Charleston. Once again the evil Confederates show why they are a Malignant Tumor on the map of North America. Yet every day more and more weapons are smuggled across the border to help blacks fight back.

ZBQLBfG.png

Back in Europe there were some major developments as the Balkans exploded into armed conflict. Encouraged and funded by the Soviets, Socialist Revolutionaries in Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria rose up against their oppressive monarchies. While it is good to see more Socialist Revolutions in the world this also presents a danger of the Soviets spreading their disgraceful ideology to the Balkans. Agents from the USSA are sent into these newly established Socialist countries to see if Revolutionary leaders can potentially be convinced to turn away from Soviet Revisionism and towards true Socialism. Meanwhile this conflict causes territorial grabs against the weakened Balkan nations by the Romanian reactionaries and the Soviet lackeys in Hungary.

1mYlv30.png

0zPfnZP.png

Meanwhile, the racial violence in the Confederacy continues as a Paramilitary group known as the Black Panthers is formed, these black freedom fighters fight a guerrilla war against the racist police force and state militias sent to stop them with some success. It doesn't take long for the Confederate Government to realise that the Black Panthers are being armed by the USSA, which unfortunately legitimizes the views of certain Right-Wing Confederate congressmen who have been for years speaking out against the 'Negro-Bolshevik Conspiracy' within their country. These demagogues and their hateful rhetoric are able to further intensify the ongoing Red Scare in the Confederacy which directly leads to violence against black communities in the south. The situation is growing extremely dangerous south of the Mason-Dixon Line and the USSA must be ready to intervene should this violence escalate further against the oppressed blacks. For now Chicago will continue to smuggle arms and money to both the Black Panthers and other Socialist movements in the south.

FgINPgr.png

Meanwhile in Mexico the Civil War continues with the Revolutionaries making gains in Central Mexico, bringing them within striking distance of Mexico City itself. Heavy fighting occurs north of the Mexican capital as Imperialist Forces fight desperately. Meanwhile the long Siege of Veracruz has ended with the starving defenders forced to surrender, many of whom being executed by Imperial soldiers after the battle. These brave revolutionaries were a testament to the Socialist cause and their sacrifice will not be forgotten as many Revolutionaries on the frontlines push forward determined to avenge the 'Heroes of Veracruz'. Meanwhile the Imperialist failures in the field have led to the formation of the National Synarchist Union, a group of reactionaries who criticize the Imperial Government's failure to crush the Socialists and try to inspire a 'Holy War against Socialism' amongst the Mexican citizens.

5gbk2N1.png

Meanwhile an Imperial Conference is ongoing between the British Empire and its lackeys. Along with the Canadians came a representative from the New England Republic who, unknown to the Canadians, was an informant for the USSA. This agent gained first hand knowledge of the Empire's intentions and it seems like they are for the most part mostly concerned about their own stability but when the time came to discuss mutual defence the Canadian representative spoke of the threat the USSA poses to world peace and requested massive aid from the British to defend themselves. Within a day the transcript of this speech was on President Browder's desk in Chicago, leading to concerns that the British Imperialists and their Allies might be preparing for war with the USSA. This is why policies such as the Five-Year Plans are necessary, to defend Socialism against those who wish to destroy it.

l1XzOkp.png

Meanwhile in the Balkans the Bulgarian Government surrenders to the Revolutionaries. In the other parts of the 'Great Balkan Revolution' the Serbians have suffered defeats by the Royalists who have effectively cut their territory in half while the Croatian Revolution remains a stalemate.

LLjEB0z.png

As June comes to an end the USSA continues to speed inexorably forward as the policies introduced by the new President Earl Browder aim to bring American dominance over the Western Hemisphere within a decade. While reactionaries gather strength in Europe and the Confederacy and while the Soviets turn towards revisionism the USSA remains isolated diplomatically. But their loyal comrades in Mexico have gained the upper hand in their war against the Imperialists and hopefully by the end of 1937 will have reunited their country. Internally, the USSA is growing more united and more determined to defeat the evil regimes which surround their country. Hopefully this dream will soon be realized.

Chapter 4 - July-December 1937
As the USSA reorganizes under the rule of President Browder their neighbours become increasingly worried about the emerging colossus which also happens to be encouraging movements opposed to the tyrannical policies of their governments.

In the Balkans the bitter series of civil wars continue to rage, the Bulgarian Revolutionaries had recently announced their victory over the Royalists and now the Serbian Socialists also emerge victorious. The Serbs had been on the verge of defeat just a month earlier but with the help from the Bulgarians as well as the Soviets they have turned the tables on the Royalists and occupied Belgrade, declaring victory for the Serbian Revolution not long after. The Revolution continues in Croatia and remains a stalemate but with the People's Republic of Serbia now free to help their Socialist comrades this conflict too may turn in favor of the Revolutionaries. Reaction to these events in Chicago remains mixed as while the Socialist victories are no doubt a cause for celebration the influence of the Revisionist Soviets over this region means that its possible these new nations may turn their back on the Revolution just as they did in Moscow. Meanwhile following the Serbian victory they are able to regain territories that had been occupied by the Hungarians during the Revolution. The Hungarians had clearly hoped to retain control of this land but under Soviet pressure they agree to return it.

There is also some good news back in the Western Hemisphere as the Mexican Revolutionary Army enters the national capital of Mexico City. The Imperialists withdraw south to regroup but surely their vile regime cannot last much longer as the Socialists now have a clear upper hand in this Civil War.

acA7tIT.png

At home the vast project of Industrialization continues under President Browder's Five-Year Plans. At this rate the USSA might be capable of destroying their malevolent rivals to the south by 1940. Some say this is optimistic but there is definitely the feeling amongst the people of the USSA that the Confederacy is already on the verge of collapsing under the weight of its own injustices and all it needs is for somebody to kick in the door of the rotten structure.

jum0ki9.png

Meanwhile in September work is completed on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This magnificent work of engineering is a testament to the pride and hardworking nature of the American worker and will be a sign of Socialist achievement for years to come.

rUNIT7A.png

Meanwhile in Portugal the Civil War comes to an end with the Socialists defeating the last reactionary forces in mainland Portugal. The reactionaries are unfortunately able to flee to their African colonies where they are for the moment beyond the reach of the Socialists. However, what is important for now is that Portugal itself is under Socialist control and in Chicago the USSA leadership hope to be able to turn the Portuguese towards the path of true Socialism and reject the revisionism of their Soviet benefactors.

In October there is another momentous event in Mexico as the Revolutionaries are able to recapture Veracruz, the site of the heroic Socialist defence in the early months of the war. As the Revolutionaries advanced on the city, the Confederacy had seen the writing on the wall and withdrew their navy from around the city, leaving the tottering Imperialists to their fate. The recapture of Veracruz was cause for much celebration not just across Mexico but also in the USSA whose volunteers had taken part in the assault on the city. The defenders who had been forced to surrender in the earlier siege before being executed were promptly reburied by Socialist authorities who gave these honorable martyrs the heroic funeral they deserved.

In Brazil, weeks of rising political and racial violence instigated by the Integralists culminated in their attempting to seize power outright. This coup ended in failure as Prime Minister Vargas was able to rally the military behind him. In the aftermath of this failed coup the Integralist leadership was arrested and imprisoned. With the Integralists hopes of seizing power gone maybe less reactionary political movements might be able to gain power in the coming years. The situation in Brazil will remain closely watched by the Government of the USSA as well as their agents active in Brazil itself.

In the last days of 1937 the Mexican Imperialists finally surrendered, allowing the Revolutionaries to declare victory in the Mexican Civil War. The conflict had been brutal but the victory of Socialism in Mexico means that it was worth it in the end. The Revolutionaries wasted no time in nationalizing foreign oil companies within their country. Confederate and European capitalists who had long exploited Mexico for her resources were expelled. President Browder was quick to send his congratulations to his Mexican counterpart Cardenas for their successful Revolution as well as their expulsion of foreign exploiters.

YxdQQ63.png

And so 1937 came to an end. Internally the USSA continues its industrialization programs while around the world Socialism greatly grows in strength. While its unfortunate that the Socialist world is divided the way it is the fact that Socialism in general is gaining strength at the expense of the reactionaries and imperialists is still cause for celebration.

The true enemy are clearly those Russian fools - they must be crushed.

The true enemy are clearly those Russian fools - they must be crushed.

Indeed...I'm actually really glad Bukharin took power in the USSR, makes things more interesting and lets me bring some Inter-Socialist rivalry into this AAR :)

True, true! Forget the capitalists and the reactionaries, or the petty bourgeois. Nothing makes the blood of a true revolutionary boil as angrily as the sight of a heretic splinterer who falsely calls himself revolutionary. Extirpate the heretics false revolutionaries! Strike deals with any willing devil of you must - cease all other efforts, for nothing else poses as grave a danger to salvation the revolution than poison from within!

Haha very well put...sure nobody hates Communists more than other Communists XD

aand its new chapter time...

Chapter 5 - 1938
It was the beginning of a new year in the USSA as an increased feeling of positivity emerged in a nation that was beginning to properly heal from the scars of the Revolution five years earlier. As 1937 entered into 1938 American attention was mostly based to their south as the Confederate States were ravaged by racial violence and the Mexican Civil War had ended with a Socialist government friendly to Chicago taking power.

63IV95i.png

That racial violence in the south was now at the forefront of the Confederate Government's attention as well. On January 4th CS President Bailey made a speech in Richmond condemning the USSA for their aiding of the Black Panthers, declaring that further support of what he referred to as 'Negro Subversives' would be considered an act of war on the Confederacy. This declaration provoked a strong reaction in Chicago with many stating that the CSA's repugnant racism made their support of the Black Panthers justified, a Congresswoman from New York even went as far as to refer to the Confederacy's punitive actions against blacks as 'Crimes against Humanity'. In the Confederacy this violence only escalated as reactionary elements gained even more popularity amongst the southern people. One such reactionary, a congressman from Virginia, advocated a war to 'Settle Accounts permanently with the Negroes and Yankees', displaying the sort of dangerous demagoguery typical of the Confederate leadership. Ultimately, the CSA showed they were unwilling to back up their words with action and no war was declared. This war of words between North and South is growing extremely dangerous and it seems possible that actual fighting may not be far off.

V7QPwtg.png

Meanwhile, in the aftermath of the Browder-Bukharin Split that had created a schism between the two major Socialist world powers, both the USSA and Soviet Union began competing for influence over smaller Socialist countries. While Mexico was firmly under USSA influence while the Balkans remained under Soviet influence, Portugal was unique as geographically it was outside both countries spheres of influence therefore a diplomatic battle occurred as Chicago desperately tried to bring Portugal under their influence at the expense of the Revisionist Soviets.

Back at home the Honeymoon Bridge across the Niagara River collapsed as a result of a large ice fall. The bridge had been closed to public use after the Revolution of 1933 as relations between the newly established USSA and Canada deteriorated and travel between the two nations became heavily restricted with troops beginning to be stationed at either side of the Niagara River. The Government in Chicago was able to credit this collapse to a routine demolition of the bridge intended to prevent Imperialist subversives from crossing into the USSA.

Zf8ujdh.png

Meanwhile back in Europe the ongoing tensions in the Czech Sudetenland flared up once again. The German Empire attempted to bully the Czechs by demanding for a new Government to be established in Prague more friendly to them but these demands were ignored and Berlin took no more action. Clearly this is just the latest episode in European history of Imperialist powers intimidating smaller countries and shows why both Imperialism and Nationalism need to be destroyed for Socialism to rise.

8kTHPCW.png

Just days later there was an attempted Coup in Albania that was easily crushed by the Military. The small nation has been under Italian domination since the end of the Great War and as a result of the Balkan Revolutions last year the Pro-Italian Government had implemented harsh measures against the Albanian people to prevent the spread of the Revolution into their country. It seems extremely likely that this failed coup was orchestrated by the Ottoman Empire who undoubtedly seek to regain prestige they had lost as a result of the Great War.

Uv1KBCo.png

In Mexico the new Revolutionary Government was implementing new Socialist policies of a mostly Agrarian nature. The Revolutionaries also began to strip away the power of the Catholic Church, which had always held a great amount of power and influence in the Mexico of old. Catholic ministers of course protested but were ignored by the Government. This secularization was met with approval in Chicago but many felt that their allowing the church to continue operating was a bad decision, comparing it to President Thomas' limited tolerance of capitalists before Browder took power. Hopefully the Mexicans will not make the same mistake as the Soviets and turn their back on the Revolution their people had fought so bravely to achieve.

In March disaster struck in California as a massive flooding occurred in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. Over a hundred people were killed as a result of this disaster and there was widespread property damage across Southern California.

rz5bPQZ.png

Back in Europe the Kingdom of Greece held a new round of elections that resulted in an alliance of Royalists and Reactionaries taking power. This result as well as the willingness of these two ideologies to work together shows how they fear the spread of Socialism into their country following the successful Revolutions in the Balkans. Incidentally one of those Revolutions, the one in Croatia, is still ongoing and has descended into a bitter stalemate reminiscent of the Great War.

vB6b1sR.png

Summer 1938 proved relatively quiet in both the USSA and the world as while the USSA continued its rapid push to industrialize, violence and suspicion continued in many parts of the world. In August the Czech Republic once again came to the forefront of World Events as the Czech Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk died after being found to have fallen out of a window outside his ministry building. After an investigation by Czech authorities it was concluded that Masaryk was murdered but there were no clues as to who was responsible. There were widespread suspicions that the Austrian Nazis were behind this murder which was being dubbed by both the Czech press and the people as the 'Third Defenestration of Prague'. What is known is that Masaryk was a vocal opponent of the actions of the Sudeten Germans. Whatever the truth, this situation in the Czech Republic seems like it can only be solved by a war.

16uxzNZ.png

Meanwhile Italy, who had grown increasingly opposed to the expansion of German influence in Europe attempted to persuade the French to join them in declaring their support for Czech sovereignty. However the French refused and the Italians were unwilling to stand up to the Germans alone. So for now the Czech Republic would have no support against the Imperialists on their western border.

2RYAz30.png

However, just days later there was an astonishing new development as the Germans suddenly demanded that Austria submit to their rule. After the Italians once again proved unwilling to go to war with Germany over the matter the Austrian Nazis fled the country into Italy where their leader Adolf Hitler established a Government-in-Exile. Meanwhile back in Austria a Provisional Government was formed that quickly voted to join the German Empire. These events may seem sudden to those not familiar with the situation but support in Austria for an 'Anschluss' with the Germans had been popular ever since the end of the Great War, especially amongst those who opposed Hitler and his Reactionaries. Clearly the Austrian people considered their old German enemy to be their final salvation from the scourge of the Nazis.

WIaRXjJ.png

In October a Resolution regarding the situation in the Sudetenland seemed to be found as the Czech Government agreed to grant autonomy to the Sudetenland in exchange for German guarantees to respect the territorial boundaries of the Czech State. This deal seems to be the best the Czechs could have gotten in the face of the bloated German colossus on their border but it seems unlikely this will permanently end the possibility of another Great War in Europe. It should only be a matter of time before another crisis occurs on the continent.

8WdjvHL.png

Back at home life continued to improve for the people of the USSA as the Socialist system allowed the American workers to find pride in their work. Unemployment has dropped dramatically since the inauguration of Earl Browder with help from frequent Public Works programs to help those still unemployed to be able to contribute to improving the USSA still further.

Z1mzclY.png

Overall, the year of 1938 was a largely uneventful one for the USSA as much focus was put on internal improvements to the economy and the nations growing industrial base that will soon become the envy of the other North American nations. As tensions continue to rise with the vile Confederates and the Imperialist lackeys in Canada, it seems possible that a Second Great War that is surely inevitable in Europe could also spread to the Western Hemisphere and should that day come the USSA will certainly be prepared.

The USSA better be prepared given its rather quiescent local politics (compared to elsewhere anyway)

New chapter time...

Chapter 6 - 1939
As the new year began tensions were running high across the world...the USSA eyed its southern neighbour with suspicion while fermenting unrest amongst the many oppressed groups in the Confederacy. Europe was once again consumed by imperialism and petty nationalism while the Soviets waited for more opportunity to spread their revisionist philosophies even further beyond their borders. The world in 1939 was fast becoming a tinderbox just as it had in 1914 and surely it won't be long until somebody lights the match. And when the world burns again the cause of Socialism will surely rise from the ashes of the old order and dominate the world!

DryIaqm.png

In the early days of January there was a worrying development as the British Empire officially announced that it will guarantee the Independence of the Confederacy against the aggression of the USSA. Apparently there are still many British politicians who consider the Socialists the true enemy despite the growing Revanchism of France on the European Mainland. This is a worrying development for the USSA leadership who until now had assumed they would be able to crush the Confederates without a serious response from the European powers. Plenty of people in the USSA remember how it was European interference that had allowed the south to successfully secede in the first place and the threat of a two-front war will now force Chicago to rethink their strategy to putting an end to the vile regime that existed south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

MTpSywY.png

This potentially seismic shift in American geopolitics led to President Browder taking drastic action and introducing conscription in the USSA in order to make the Red Army capable of fighting a two-front war should the need arise. Conscription was an unprecedented move in the USSA and proved unpopular with many citizens. While there had been a limited draft in the USA in 1918 it was nothing compared to the scale with which the Chicago Government was now ordering its people into military service, sure it was a rather unpopular move but the very existence of the USSA is at stake and so sacrifices are necessary.

kZHHIke.png

XSGy4XQ.png

As the nationwide conscription was enacted a massive effort was taken to equip and feed these new volunteers of the vastly expanding Red Army. American Industry would be stretched to the limit with such an effort but the end result will no doubt be worth it.

BpuM3DB.png

In the South meanwhile the new year brought new Confederate elections with the Democrats retaining their monopoly in power with the election of the Virginian Harry F. Byrd. Byrd had made alliances with certain Right-Wing factions and promised to take a hard line against both the Black Panthers within their borders and the USSA. There have been reports of widespread political violence with the different factions employing thugs to beat and intimidate their opponents and even prevent people from voting. In many places the corrupt police turned a blind eye to such practices, clearly this election was not a fair one and the political violence it created is unlikely to fade away any time soon.

1OX9eFN.png

In Europe another crisis was brewing as the region of Pas-de-Calais, annexed by Belgium after the Great War, saw an increase in violence as the French population agitated for the region to be returned to France. Obviously this violence was sponsored by the French Government in Paris who are growing increasingly determined to regain their lost territories in Europe. In response to this crisis a Conference was held in the German city of Strassburg where the Governments of Britain & Germany seeked desperately to avoid another Great War leading to them pressuring Belgium to return Calais to the French in exchange for France promising to make no further territorial demands in Europe. Belgium had no choice but to accept under this pressure and war was averted. Politicians from both Britain & Germany declared that this was 'Peace in our time' and many celebrations occurred in Europe as a result of this declaration. With this news from Europe the possibility of the USSA being able to wage war against the Confederacy alone was even further damaged, although maybe there was still hope that the French Reactionaries would break their promise.

SsOffTH.png

However just two weeks later the British announced their protection of Belgium in a further measure to deter further French aggression, Germany followed up by announcing their own guarantee of Belgian sovereignty not long after. It was the French violation of Belgian neutrality in 1914 that had brought Britain into the Great War in the first place. Could history be set to repeat itself?

RHYvdPf.png

At the end of April there was a welcome distraction from the tensions in Europe and America as the 1939 World's Fair was held in New York City. Suspicion and rivalry was temporarily put aside as several nations sent representatives to establish exhibitions showing 'The World of Tomorrow'. The USSA Government even went as far as to ease the repression of internal enemies for a few weeks to create a better atmosphere for the fair. Of course the USSA was also determined to use the fair to display the achievements of American Socialism and the merits of their ideology compared to those that remained stuck in the past. The fair was overall a great success and was a welcome respite from the threat of war for the people of many nations.

FOvDnz7.png

The months following the World's Fair were relatively calm creating a general feeling of positivity that another major war really has been averted for good. However, those with a good understanding of the world knew better and that this calm will surely be followed by the storm. In late August months of tensions and border skirmishes along the Sino-Soviet Border resulted in a battle around the area of Lake Khasan. This battle ended with the Chinese Army gaining a slight upper hand. It seems that the Soviets are not capable of truly fighting a large-scale war in Asia and surely the Chinese will take advantage of this fact in the near future.

Puj4PDf.png

In October after another quiet couple of months the French approached the Scandinavian Federation with a Non-Aggression Pact but were rebuffed. The reason for this diplomatic move by France soon became clear as not long after they Invaded Belgium when the Belgian Government refused to cede Wallonia to them. The British were quick to respond by declaring war on France, honoring the commitments they had made earlier in the year. The German Empire was also quick to declare war on France.

Cs3OHhP.png

In response to Germany entering the war, and certainly at the instigation of the French, Poland declared war on Germany. Not long after Italy honored her alliance with France and also declared war on the Allies. The Second World War had begun. These events were met with approval by the USSA who had long hoped for the Imperialists and Reactionaries to destroy each other in a Great War to allow for the ascension of Socialism across the world. However, there was also a feeling of caution by those who knew that the USSA was not yet ready to fight a war itself and that they must take care not to be sucked into this conflict too soon. The war to liberate the Western Hemisphere will come but that fight must be fought only on the USSA's terms.

DzNtChF.png

One country eager to take advantage of the outbreak of hostilities is China who just two weeks after the beginning of the War demanded the submission of Tibet. Tibet had been nominally under British protection since their declaration of Independence in 1911 and it was the threat of British intervention that had deterred the Chinese Government until now. With Britain too busy dealing with events closer to home the Tibetans had no choice but to submit and were promptly reabsorbed into the Republic of China.

Ib4JsbB.png

uH04Z6N.png

Back in Europe, the fighting in Belgium was a far cry from the bloody stalemate it had been in the Great War as the French smashed through Allied Forces with a deadly new form of mobile warfare leading to the Fall of Belgium by the start of November with the Belgian Government relocating to the Congo and the British temporarily evacuating the continent while the Germans retreated back behind their own borders. These new French tactics, dubbed 'Guerre Rapide' by the French propaganda machine, shocked the Allies whose own tactics and leadership remained for the most part stuck in 1918. Not long after the conquest of Belgium an incident occurred just inside the Dutch border where two German intelligence agents were captured by the French who used this incident to declare that the Dutch are aiding the Germans and launched an Invasion of the neutral Netherlands.

dCiUQqs.png

As the year came to an end the events in war-ravaged europe were at the forefront of the news as ancient enemies once again fought for supremacy. For the USSA these events can only be beneficial, especially if this World War lasts as long as the last one. Not only will this allow Socialist movements the opportunity to grow in influence within the warring nations, but the distraction of the Europeans allows the USSA to put their own plans into motion. That British guarantee of Independence to the CSA, a source of great apprehension to the USSA leadership earlier this year, now seems like a worthless promise that the Allies can not hope to honor, especially as French Forces rampage through their lands. Earlier in the year the idea of starting a war in America in 1940 seemed optimistic at best. But as the Red Army swells in size with valiant conscripts ready to fight for Socialism and Equality while brave freedom fighters tear the Confederate system down from within suddenly there is nothing optimistic about next year being the one in which the American workers will finally erase the cancer of the Confederacy from the map of America!
