I was playing along for several generations in the Duchy of Armenia Minor when due to no fault/skill of my own I suddenly wound up as King of Ruthenia. Obviously this dramatically changed my game experience. Yes Ruthenia is a wasteland of backwoods hillbillies but it does have manpower, if not technology. I eventually figured out that I needed to shift my capital to Tarsos to stop my horrible Demesne penalty but there is one other vexing issue. Heavy Horse! I had spent thousands developing Heavy Horse units in Tarsos, Adana, Teluch, Seleucia and sudenly they're gone.... just gone. No buildings, no Heavy horse and horse archers in the levies, no option to build the buildings necessary to produce them anywhere. Instead they were replaced with the option to build heavy infantry. Anyone have any ideas?

Leader culture decides what cultural buildings you can build. Most likely you used to be Greek, which lets you build catapract buildings. Now you're Russian or some other slav culture, which entitles you to build Heavy infantry cultural buildings and retinues. If you change culture back again somehow, you still have to rebuild every single cultural building.

Damn, I was afraid it was something like that (irreversible). I don't even have the option to convert to leige's culture since no one will have me. I tried doing the swear fealty thing with the Byz emperor (would have been a vast expanse of their power) but as Ruthenia is not de jure, there's no option even though Duchy of Armenia minor is. I guess I'll live with the tradeoff of men for horses and go back to my 'Kingdom of Armenia' project. Thanks for the quick replies.

Well, it won't give you back your buildings, but you can always invite a courtier of a desired culture, and have him educate your heir. More often than not, your heir will change culture to that of his guardian :)

I did keep my retinue. But....when I was just the Duke of Arm Minor I didn't have enough manpower to purchase the Hvy Horse/Horse Arch Retinue (uses 1600 cap space) so I had 400Lt Cav/100Hvy Cav mix. I just tried again to find out what happens using a save game but died at max retinue of 1530, not able to purchase. Of course after my Greek Duke croaks Hvy Horse/Horse archers is not available so I'm assuming it would disappear the way my levies did. Lucky I wasn't in combat at the time.:)

No, you keep your levies, making William the Bastard highly entertaining. First buy Knights, then Longbowmen, and crush the world!
